Description: Van Kerkwijk, situated at the Nes 41 just behind Dam square, is a classic Amsterdam cafe and restaurant where you can eat and drink from early in the morning till late in the evening. Van Kerkwijk sisters have chosen a personal approach. That's why a menu doesn't exist and your options are presented at the table by your waiter. Van Kerkwijk stands for quality food and drinks in an urban atmosphere. Characteristic, easy going, value for money. You feel at home between the regular customers who keep returning for the varied menu and the relax atmosphere. Van Kerkwijk doesn't take reservations, walk in for a table or wait at the bar with a good beer or wine.

We went here a few weeks ago in our first trip to Amsterdam and the service was poor. It was quite clear that the lady was overworked and under stress whilst the guy at the bar did little to help her. Whilst the 25mins to wait for a table is fine, the 35 mins to get the attention of the waitress once we were seated (or even to get a drink) was not pleasing.
In terms of food, the entrees were decent but the mains were horrendous. Strawberry consomme does not go with steak and the other meat dish was entirely forgettable. To their credit, the waitress sat down with us afterwards and asked what was wrong and was accepting enough of our feedback and apologised for it.

Wouldn't go here again. Given the good reviews from Tripadvisor, I expected better.

Superb, fresh food, great service, pleasant atmosphere. Don't be out off by the lack of a menu - te nice waiter comes over and goes through the deliciousness with you and it's all superb. It's like the Romans (Fort Greene, Brooklyn) of Amsterdam. Had the mussels with garlic sauce and Indonesian chicken, both of which were perfectly cooked.

This restaurant was set up some 15 years ago and so you might think that over time standards would slip, and while we have only just been there for the first time last week, the food, service and general ambience was excellent.

There is no menu or prices except for a wine list. The staff just come up to you and explain the choices for the day which are roughly four starters and four main dishes and you choose on the spot. You cannot make reservations but somehow there was always space even if you had to wait at the bar for a few minutes and have a drink.

It's very near the busy parts of town, just of Dam Square and yet it is in a very quiet street called Nes (incidentally only two minutes walk away from the great Boogards B&B, (see my other reviews), and also close to other great bars and restaurants.

Price wise, this was really good value after not seeing any prices! €143 for four people including two bottles of wines, and starter drinks and 3 spirit drinks.

Definitely recommended.

We found this restaurant through tripadvisor, as it was ranked highly and was near our hotel. Seems to a family run business where there are no formal menus. We were just told what the dishes of the day were. Service was very good and both dishes nicely cooked. Prices where a bit higher than we expected, but it was definitely a good experience and we highly recommend this place.

My daughter 21 years of age and her girlfriend had found the place. It's their second time at Van Kerkwijk within 4 days in Amsterdam.
We were greated like good friends, when we arrived - never met the staff before:)
We felt at "home" from the very first moment. Homemade bread and cake's laid around and looked very tempting.
The bread tasted as good as it looked. We were to full after our maincourse to try the cake's unfortunately.
We were introduced to the menus from our waiter - no menucards - she did a very good job introducing the food.
We all chose differently and it was lovely, fresh and well prepared food we had to eat, and the food had a great touch like homemade food has, when it is made by a good chef. Not expensive at all.
Thanks for a lovely experience/meal to the kitchen staff and the blond woman who served us - from the two young blond Danes, one of them's mum (me) and my man from "Down Under".

Thank Vicki E
