“Nice b&b in a good location.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 March 2009

We stayed in this B&B for six days in January. The proprietress was very kind, provided excellent breakfasts and accommodating as far as our requests for access to a microwave and early breakfasts. Our dog was welcomed. The room we stayed in had a separate entrance which was nice with the dog. I found the room to be a little too cold and dark (Although we did not address this to the owner and it probably would not be a problem during other months). The overall cleanliness was satisfactory. There were some signs of water damage. Overall the proprietress' friendliness and personality makes this B&B worthwhile. The room we stayed in was just "adequate." The location is also very nice... just off the Amstel by the twin sister's bridge. The price of the room was also extremely reasonable.

My husband and I have been living in Holland and as friends were coming over we all got together in Amsterdam to celebrate New Year. Aemstelhuys had been recommended to us and the house, location and our hostess, Lesley, more than met our expectations.

The old house was beautifully decorated for Christmas and we were welcomed with hot chocolate and coffee in front of an open fire. The room was just like the photos on the website and the whole feeling was cosy.

Breakfast was served in the large kitchen/dining room and it was delicious. The location is so central that we could walk everywhere and to see the skinny bridge lit up at night, which is just around the corner from the B&B was magical
Actually I would like to keep the address secret but on the other hand, Lesley deserves lots of nice visitors so if you are looking for a hidden treasure in Amsterdam, this is it!

My husband and I stayed in this beautiful little B&B between Christmas and New Years Eve. Lesley the owner, is a wonderful and interesting lady that has definitely travelled the world and has many stories to tell. The breakfast provided a wonderful start to the day, and the room was so cozy and comfortable. We had the basement room, which was very large and had a very comfortable King size bed with a good little ensuite. As the previous reviews state, the location is great, a little off the beaten track but not too much as very easy to walk around and get to all the major sites within 15-20mins. We would definitely recommend a little restaurant called Vooges which is a 5min walk away on Utrechtsestraat - best meal we had on the trip. For a great stay in beautiful Amsterdam - you can not go past Amestelhuys B&B.

What a great stay at this historic property! Aemstelhuys (or Amstel House) is in a perfect location for getting to all the famous attractions of Amsterdam, but is ideally located on a quiet street for those who need to rest after a long flight or after a hard day of sightseeing.

Our room was very clean and tastefully appointed. The en-suite bath was spotless. The beds were comfortable and made with fine linen, and as an added bonus the room also included an in-room hot beverage service stocked with coffee, teas, cocoa, snacks and biscuits.

Mrs. Marsh serves a delicious continental breakfast with special attention to guests' needs and preferences. The table was elegantly set, including fresh flowers and lit candles, but retained a relaxed, homey feel. She will help you plan your day and give advice on how to make the most of your stay in her city.

As Amstel House is a designated historic property, structural changes such as installing a lift are not allowed. Guests should be prepared to carry their own luggage up a narrow stairway to the second floor bedrooms. However, the views from upstairs are worth the effort.

Rather than a small hotel, Amstel House is a bed-and-breakfast establishment in the traditional British style. We felt we were guests in the house of a native Amsterdamer. You will not be disappointed with your stay at Amstel House.

  • Liked — Friendly hosts, quiet but convenient location, personal attention, great breakfast, overall comfort
  • Disliked — Steep entry and narrow steps and stairway due to Historic Property designation. Everything else perfect.

My husband and I stayed with hostess Leslie in September. She is very interesting and well traveled. She offers an amazing breakfast and many helpful tips for things to do in Amsterdam.
The house is very central to everything but also on a quiet little alley off a canal.
We had the double room which was VERY comfortable and lovely. We will definitely go back here next time.

**Note about Amsterdam homes: They have very narrow, steep staircases, sometimes ladder style. If you don't pack light, you may be sorry. Guesthouses do not generally offer bag handling. I noticed some older ladies with huge luggage and no one to help.

  • Liked — The comfortable bed and shower and breakfast.

I stayed at Aemstelhuys with my sister in October for 3 nights and we really enjoyed our stay at the B&B. Our room in the attic was beautifully presented and the beds very comfortable! The location is fantastic, away from the busier and slightly seedy centre of town, in an area which is filled with friendly locals rather than tourists and stag parties. Although the B&B is in a quiet street it is very close to a street with plenty of bars and restaurants to keep you occupied in the evening and lots of fancy shops to explore during the day. Lesley runs the B&B with a relaxed and friendly style; she is very helpful and welcoming. The tasty and filling breakfast of museli, fresh bread from the local bakery, cheeses and jams is supplemented with Lesley's tales of her globe trotting adventures! I would definitely recommend this B&B to anyone who wants a luxurious stay in somewhere away from tourist traps, for a proper experience of Amsterdam.

Recently spent three nights at the Aemstelhuys B&B and first of all I’d just like to mention the location which is quiet, pretty central and ideal for couples searching for relaxation.

The room we stayed in was in the basement of the proprietor’s charming townhouse. The benefit of this room was that it had its own front door meaning you can come and go as you please without worrying about bothering anyone. En-suite shower room was small but had an excellent shower and plenty of clean towels. The room itself was large with a lovely comfortable bed which made it quite tricky getting up for breakfast. But that was no problem as Lesley (the owner) graciously served breakfast when we staggered out of bed (11am on the first morning!). Tea and coffee making facilities are rare on the continent but Aemstelhuys had these facilities and a welcoming jar of cookies… perfect for the munchies!

Breakfast was as good any continental breakfast we’ve had with a fine selection of cheese, cold meats, preserves, glorious fresh bread and great coffee.

I’d recommend this B&B to any couple wanting a change from soulless hotel rooms. If the room had a small fridge for fresh milk and bubbly then that would help move it to perfection. Can’t wait to return for another chillaxing weekend in Amsterdam. Thanks Lesley.
