“This was a great place to stay in Amsterdam”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 August 2009

Almost everything about this stay was perfect. The house was beautiful, well located in a quiet downtown neighbourhood, clean, well appointed. The breakfast was a very good European style breakfast, served with very flexible hours. Leslie was a wonderful host. We had the room downstairs, with a separate entrance. It was a great room, large and well appointed. The only suggestion I can make would be to put a dehumidifier in the basement room as it tended to get humid, but not to the point of mildew as one reviewer suggested. Not only would we would stay there again, we would plan to stay there again on a next trip to Amsterdam.

Lesley was a very gracious hostess and made us feel at home in her B&B. My husband and I had many a lively conversation with her and the other guests while enjoying our scrumptious breakfasts. There was plenty of food! We stayed four nights and the location could not have been better. Because of the B&B's excellent location, we were able to walk to all of our destinations in the city, and if needed, it was a brief walk to the tram or the Stop/Go bus on the Prinsengracht. The neighborhood was quiet at night, which was perfect for us. We stayed in the downstairs room and the accommodations were very nice, but the room was dark. Next time we visit we'll ask to stay in an upstairs room. We had Lesley cook dinner for us on our last night and it was marvelous! She is a wonderful chef and I would highly recommend visitors take advantage of her talents.

My husband and I wanted to experience Amsterdam the way people who live there do and this B&B certainly provides that in a lovely, typically Dutch canal house. Be prepared for climbing some steep stairs but worth it when you get up there.

Our large room on the top floor was very nice and the street was a wonderful street, primarily residences but close to everything including the Stop and Go bus and some exceptional restaurants.

Our hostess was very helpful and gave us plenty of advice about getting around. She even had decorated Easter eggs for us on Easter Sunday. It was a good value in a quiet, convenient location.

My fiance and I have just arrived home yesterday after spending 3 fantatsic nights with friends at this b & b. We were pleased to find that the pictures on the website were 100% true. We stayed in the Lady Grey room which was beautifully laid out and very clean. We had a small but very clean and smart modern bathroom with a fantastic powershower. The owner, Lesley has gone to great lengths to make this a fantastic b & b. Not only does the whole house look well presented, the breakfasts are outstanding, we were offered a varied choice of breakfast including hot croissants, different breads, yoghurts, jams, a cheese board, ham, muesli, greek yoghurt with honey, fresh fruit etc.... plus an endless supply of tea, coffee and fresh orange!!!

Location wise we found Aemstelhuys to be extremely convenient. The tram line was at the end of the road which takes you thru all the "tourist" areas and to Amsterdam Centraal. There are also lovely bars and resturants in this area. Lesley gave us some great advice on getting the best out of Amsterdam.

I would recommend this b and b to all and will be back soon!! - Especially for the cookery course!!!

I have to admit the owner was very kind and gracious, however the room we stayed in (downstairs) was VERY cold, dark and smelled of mildew. We voiced our concern to the owner about the temperature and she told us it was "plenty warm". We ended up sleeping in our cashmere sweaters every night! Further, she has a CAT, which is not mentioned anywhere. I am allergic and this made the stay unpleasant.

We stayed in this B&B for six days in January. The proprietress was very kind, provided excellent breakfasts and accommodating as far as our requests for access to a microwave and early breakfasts. Our dog was welcomed. The room we stayed in had a separate entrance which was nice with the dog. I found the room to be a little too cold and dark (Although we did not address this to the owner and it probably would not be a problem during other months). The overall cleanliness was satisfactory. There were some signs of water damage. Overall the proprietress' friendliness and personality makes this B&B worthwhile. The room we stayed in was just "adequate." The location is also very nice... just off the Amstel by the twin sister's bridge. The price of the room was also extremely reasonable.

My husband and I have been living in Holland and as friends were coming over we all got together in Amsterdam to celebrate New Year. Aemstelhuys had been recommended to us and the house, location and our hostess, Lesley, more than met our expectations.

The old house was beautifully decorated for Christmas and we were welcomed with hot chocolate and coffee in front of an open fire. The room was just like the photos on the website and the whole feeling was cosy.

Breakfast was served in the large kitchen/dining room and it was delicious. The location is so central that we could walk everywhere and to see the skinny bridge lit up at night, which is just around the corner from the B&B was magical
Actually I would like to keep the address secret but on the other hand, Lesley deserves lots of nice visitors so if you are looking for a hidden treasure in Amsterdam, this is it!
