“Interesting tour”
Reviewed 28 July 2013

Our family of four, plus just another couple, were given a guided tour of the windmill. The guide explained the mechanisms inside and outside, and the three purposes for which the windmill was used over the years. There was also a nice view of the city along the way. As a bonus, while we were on the outdoor deck we got to see the nearby rotating bridge open and several ships pass through. This low-key tour was well worth the three euro admission.

“Beautiful and informative”
Reviewed 22 July 2013 via mobile

I visited today and had Peter for a guide. I learned so much about the windmills, Dutch history and the city of Haarlem. After many trips to Amsterdam, it was a welcome escape. This is a very easy walk and worth a visit. Thank you Trip Advisor reviewers, I am so glad to have taken the time. The people of Haarlem are charming, courteous and welcoming. It feels a little like Bruges. The windmill visit was definitely a highlight.

For 3 Euro you can take a half guided tour around the windmill.
The guide was very interesting, friendly and demonstrated how the windmill works.

“Who knew that windmills could be used for so many things?”
Reviewed 13 May 2013

This museum tells about the many uses of windmills. The models of various windmills made by volunteers were very detailed in nature. It only cost 3 Euros to get in and I thought that the information was interesting. You have to be able to climb steep stairs (near the top, the stairs are more like a ladder and you must climb down them the same as a ladder).

“Don't know why most guidebooks fail to mention it”
Reviewed 11 May 2013

It's a charming, picturesque windmill that has been restored to fully working order. The cost is pretty reasonable, you get to go up and see the workings of the machinery, the tour guides are really good (at least ours was), and there's a small museum inside. There's also a serviceable cafe next door where you can sit on the canal, and it's not as crowded as the central square.

There aren't that many windmills in Holland anymore. You have to travel outside Amsterdam to see one. Given that Haarlem is only 20 minutes away, and the town has many other charms anyway, this may be your best bet to see a real working windmill in Holland.
