“Nice new room”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 May 2013

We needed to be at the State House at 7.15 in the morning so decided to spent the night in this hotel. The hotel has an American feeling to it thanks to the carpets, abundant wood, stained glass and a whiskey bar. The 'superior room' turned out to be ok and newly refurbished. Clean bathroom (with bath for additional 9.50 euro) and complementary coffee, tea and wifi. Room was a bit hot, but opening the window was inviting the noise of some giant kitchen fan in, so that was not really an option. Airco was a bit noisy as well. Best thing to do would be asking for a room which does not border the inner courtyard if you care about some fresh air without mechanical noise. All in all, decent place, a bit overpriced, on the edge of historic downtown Haarlem.

Room Tip: Ask for a room without the kitchen air filtration system noise

We wanted to stay at a nice hotel, but couldn't afford Amsterdam prices, so booked three nights at the Carlton Square Hotel in Haarlem. We were pleased with the offer and booked and paid for three nights through ebookers.com. We opted to not have breakfast as we felt that 18.50 Euros, per person was a bit steep (I work at a B&B and we charge £6.00 for breakfast). My intepretation of the location from the train station was a bit off - as it was about a 20 - 25 minute walk (though not unpleasant), or a bus journey costing 2 Euros. On one day we took the bus 80 to Amsterdam city centre, which was easy - the stop was just around the corner from the hotel - a 'day saver' costing 14 Euros for two of us, and on the second day, opted for a return by train (but then it was necessary to walk the 20 minutes to the hotel from the train station), at a cost of about 15 Euros. It would have been helpful to know how long a walk it was from where you get off the bus to the hotel.

The hotel itself was pleasant - very helpful and friendly staff and we had dinner in the restaurant the last night we were there. It was not cheap, however, nothing in Amsterdam was. Our room was clean and was serviced daily. On check-out the reception staff informed us that we owed 337 Euros for the stay (including a two breakfasts we didn't have on the day we arrived and the day before we left) - however full payment had been taken by ebookers. In the end, we paid only the local city tax and let him know we did not have breakfast - that we weren't even in the country the morning we arrived, so couldn't have. Overall - a good experience, but if we had to do it again, we'd probably take all the money/time we spent on travel to and from Amsterdam and book a hotel in Amsterdam.

We stayed at the Carlton Square in Haarlem for 4 nights and loved it. The room was large, nicely decorated and super clean. The bathroom was delightful and the power shower was fab. We had been given a room with a balcony but that was so tiny as to be no use so don't bother asking for that. We had an executive room which came with a complimentary mini bar, but my husband didn't believe that the fridge items were included so he wouldn't partake! I don't think we will stay in Haarlem next time but if ever we did this hotel would be my first choice.

If you are planning for a nice trip to Amsterdam, this is the place to be, Haarlem is 12 minutes away from Amsterdam city by train and is well connected.
Carlton Square is one of the best hotels, very friendly and polite staff, super clean and furnished rooms, best of all Superior Deluxe rooms come with free bar ;)
They have nice and clean bath rooms and very good beds.
Its very close from the Haarlem city square which has good restaurants and pubs near by.
I enjoyed my stay for the 4 nights i stayed there, I recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask a room with Balcony, the view from this hotel is very good.

Stayed here whilst on a visit to Amsterdam in order to be able to dip in and out of the hub-bub as we pleased. A well appointed establishment with a self appointed "whiskey bar" which whilst at first glance looked a little pricy, the measures were at least three times bigger than a single UK. measure. What was pricy was the breakfast at 18 Euros per person for basically a cold but substantial buffet.
The room we had (206) was large and had all that could be required PLUS a complimentary mini bar which included wine, beer and decanters of whisky and brandy.
Cleanliness was excellent and the sleep quality of the extra large bed (two double together) could not be bettered.
Staff spoke excellent English and were not in the least instrusive. If I had a gripe it would be that we were not told of all the facilities - on our last morning I noticed that we could have used bicycles provided by the hotel. A great deal we had via Expedia at 3 nights for the price of 2. We would recommend this hotel but it is a good 20 to 30 minutes walk from the station but it is not unpleasant. There are up to ten trains an hour into Amsterdam which takes 15 to 20 minutes. There is a bus to Amsterdam from near the hotel but this takes considerably longer. Taxi drivers - like the rest of the world need to be watched and be tol that you know where you are going.

We stayed here on a recent weekend visit to Amsterdam. The hotel was around a 30 minute walk from Haarlem train station and about €10 for a taxi. The hotel itself was very clean with robes and a complimentary bar and very central to Haarlem centre with bus stops nearby. The biggest asset to this hotel is it's staff, all of whom went out of their way to make you feel welcome. We ate in the Whisky bar, a home from home, in comfortable surroundings and very reasonable prices. Will definitely make a return visit in the future - good to stay at for day tripping to Amsterdam but if you're really only interested in Amsterdam and nightlife then maybe better staying in Amsterdam. However we loved it!
