We stayed at the Golden Lion for two nights and were pleasantly surprised at how big the room was and how close to the city it was. We walked across the square from the train station to the hotel front door (we were not bothered by train noises) and walked about ten minutes to be in the main square. Our room was well set out with all the facilities but more importantly, we had room to place the bags, hang the clothes etc. They had provided a small table with two chairs near the window which served as out reading table. The breakfast room was well set out with ample provisions and staff constantly checking if customers were happy. Although there was some noise outside from late night revellers, this did not disturb us greatly. We loved our stay here.

I have been staying at the Golden Tulip in Haarlem once a year for a number of years and it is a great hotel. It is well situated, close to the railway station and a short walk from the city square. The rooms are clean and well serviced and the staff most helpful and accommodating. The buffet breakfast is varied and ample. All in all, a great place to stay when you are in Haarlem...Oh and the herring is great in June!!

We had an excellent room with many services. Highly recommend staying here. The breakfast was wonderful. The staff made every effort to accomodate our needs such as an early breakfast the morning we left. The closeness to the train station makes this hotel very accessible. Connections to Amsterdam were very easy and staying in a smaller town was the right choice for us.

Were referred here by Tulip Cycling. It is across the street from the train station. Leave the station and turn left. Room very nice. Breakfast good. Staff most helpful. A great hotel for the cost!

The hotel is located 2 minutes walk from the Haarlem train station, perfect for us because we planned to spend one evening in Amsterdam and needed to be in Haarlem early in the morning. We took the late evening train back to Haarlem and within 20 minutes (including train ride), we were in the hotel.

Interior decoration of the room is very basic. One switch for all the lights (no bed side lamp/light). There was iron and ironing board provided in the room but it's the cheapest type of iron that hardly does its job. Showel gel smells cheap, if you are fussy, bring your own.

Breakfast was good for us because all we need was fried eggs (DIY), fresh fruits, juices, good coffee, toast... They had some ham, meat and cheese i think.

If you get a good rate from this hotel, might be a good solution (when Amsterdam is fully booked) to stay here and travel to Amsterdam using the train. There is a train every 15 minutes or so and cost about Euro2something per trip if i am not mistaken.

When need to stay in Haarlem, i will return if i manage to get a good rate for the breakfast is exactly what we like.

Room Tip: We requested for a room not facing the street to avoid street noise. We got it. Although it has no v...

Thank you for your review!
Two things we would like to comment:
"One switch for all the lights, no bed side lamp/light" > Bedside lamps are fixed on the wall and can be turned on with the main switch or with their own switch.
"There was iron and ironing board provided in the room but it's the cheapest type of iron that hardly does its job" > We are aware that the iron facilities in the rooms are not the best quality, but we have to use irons that auto switch off after 5 minutes for fire precaution regulations. Steam irons are available at reception on request.

Stayed here 4 nights this February. Solo stay. Very close to the train station and a skip from where the 300 bus from Schipol berths. No more than a 10-minute walk from the city center - Grote Markt, St. Bavo, shopping, etc. - up Kruisweg, which itself has a lot of shops, coffee cafes, etc.

My room was very clean with a large bathroom, double bed, desk, table and chairs, TV, etc. All very ok. If you're looking for panache, high style, or an interesting B&B-type experience, this is probably not it, but it was reasonable, clean, convenient and had everything I needed. I did not try the breakfast buffet, which was included in the room price. I was annoyed at their asking for an additional fee for wifi - I think this is a must-have amenity now - so didn't avail myself of that option.

Haarlem is an excellent alternative if you’re looking for a weekend break that’s a bit different to Amsterdam. This hotel is adjacent to the bus & train station, but far enough away to not be affected by any noise. Bus takes only 30 minutes from Schiphol; there are 5-6 an hour.

Most of the action takes place in the area consisting of the main square (Grote Markt), and the roads off it. It’s only a 10-15 minute walk away, but is likely to take you much longer as the road you use is full of loads of interesting shops, cafes, bars and restaurants.

The hotel has decent sized rooms, clean & tidy, all expected facilities – not much more to say really. Breakfast excellent (for Holland!) with both hot & cold choices. Helpful and friendly staff. All-in-all, a very pleasant stay.
