“Overpriced and understaffed budget hotel”
Reviewed 17 August 2014

I stayed in this hotel for 10 days in June 2014 as I had some obligations in Zaandam. But, if you are interested in Amsterdam, it is not a good option. Hotel is not far from the train station (a few mins walk, too short for a taxi ride, too long under the rain or with the luggage). In the morning it takes some 30 mins to get to the Amsterdam, but evening return is not convenient at all, trains are rare and often late. The hotel is at a completely unappealing location. To reach the center of Zaandam from the hotel you have to pass through the train station. Rooms face rail tracks and deserted area under construction. Zaandam itself is a charming place that can be easily visited from elsewhere.
Contrary to the fancy pictures, this is extremely budget accommodation (you can never guess from the price). Rooms are basic. Almost no hangers. There is a glass wall between the bathroom and the room, and it could be a problem if there is more than one person in the room, as the room gets light at night if someone is in the bathroom. Bathroom is very basic and very small, no towel hangers, soap dishes, no shower cap. WiFi is extremely poor with frequent interruptions. Room was not properly cleaned during my stay. There is one small elevator and we always had to wait for the elevator.
Breakfast is a rip-off (15 euros). No fresh fruits or juice. Poor selection of pastry (and everything else). Same offer every day.
Hotel lacks personnel, so whatever you may need they won’t do it. If you approach them with a problem they give you a grin and write-down something and don’t do anything. When I was leaving they did not want to open the door that was closer to the station and I had to go with the luggage around the building under the heavy rain (my request was rejected with the smile, of course).

If you want to stay away from the glare of Amsterdam but still visit easily, Zaandam is a good choice. The hotel itself is good value, looks new and it's only around 5 minutes from the metro st.
Zaandam is quintessentially still a rural Dutch town and not many people speak English. There is a beautiful high street built around a river, and lots of shops/cafes.
OT Be careful late at night with the trains back from Amsterdam, after 12 the service stops and then there is a replacement bus every 2 hours. The bus driver thought he could charge what he liked as we were tourists and we paid 7 euros each.

The staff here are all young and very friendly, indeed we went to Hoorn and Alkmaar on advice from the staff and found them really enjoyable little picturesque towns. This hotel is very clean and even though we didn't leave towels on the floor (as requested to do if we wanted them changed) they were changed every day. I found the bed a little uncomfortable (2 queen sizes pushed together) but this may have been because it was very hot (the bottom sheet was loose and moved around too much for me) and we hadn't quite got the hang of the air conditioning.

The bathroom lacks places to hang towels and the extractor was on all the time, plus there is no tea/coffee making facilities in the room, but we bought coffee and croissants to go from the kiosk in the station every morning. It's a couple of minutes walk from the station, if that, and the main town starts on the other side of the station. You can get a bus or walk about 10 minutes to the main square where all the pubs/cafes are with plenty of shops along the way.

The only real negative was the cost of the meals in the restaurant and the lack of variety. There was a limited menu and I think this budget hotel is aimed at short stays by business people passing through. We only had two meals (both delicious and well cooked) and one buffet breakfast there as there are plenty of other places to eat in Zaandam itself, however I would say that overall it was very good value for money.

Room Tip: Although it's so close to the railway, we never heard a train from inside the room, so any room...

This is a nice hotel, the staff were very friendly and helpful. There were a few annoying things, we chose the hotel knowing in July it can get very hot but when we arrived the air conditioning was not working. Fortunately we could open the window but this did not cool the room sufficiently, a fan would have helped. The room seemed minimalist, in the bathroom it looked like hooks and shelves were originally fitted but then taken out again. The door to the bathroom is sliding and has no lock. Were hired two bicycles on day and these were in good condition and well maintained. Overall a nice hotel but needs a little more attention to detail.

Room Tip: Make sure a/c is working if you like it cool.

Hotel is very close to the Zaandam train station; 10-15 minutes by train to Amsterdam Centraal (5 EUR RT). Many trains from Centraal stop at Zaandam so getting a train is not a problem. Cannot, however, use the 5 day Amsterdam transit pass to Zaandam. Hotel is quiet, staff friendly and helpful. Bathroom was a bit small, but ok. The bed mattress was a little thin, but not uncomfortable.
Easy train ride (2 stops) from the airport. A great option if you cannot find a suitable hotel in Amsterdam - or want a quiet, convenient location. Also: (Train) ticket machines in Zaandam only accept coins, although there is a ticket window open during the day.

We stayed for a one night with breakfast as a sleepover for another flight from Schiphol. Hotel is located 5 minute walk from the train station where you can travel fast and easy to Amsterdam or Schiphol within 15 minutes. Breakfast was good but the staff but you don't have a lot of choice to choose. Room was clean and tidy. A lot of TV channels. I can recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to pay a lot cheaper for a stay in hotel than in Amsterdam and he don't bother to take a train to Zaandam.

The accomodation is situated in the middle of a deserted parking, which lacked charm. However, if you are getting around by car, it is practical and has plenty of space to park it. On foot from Zaandam's central station it might seem far if you are carrying heavy luggage... mostly when the weather is cold, rainy and windy. And you may wonder at first where the entrance to the place is, coming from the station.

But all in all the hotel had friendly and helpful personnel, was clean and big enough, with possibility of taking meals there. It's also very quiet.

I you need to take several trips to the city of Amsterdam, you need to know that the rates for rail tickets are quite high. It might be more interesting to book an accomodation in the center.
