“loved it”
Reviewed 2 December 2013

This was my first trip abroad. I was on a business trip in Almelo for 5 days. Having reached Almelo which is a small town it was good to see this old fashioned hotel in the middle of the town. Its a 10-15min walk from the railway station. I stayed in a standard double room. The beds were too soft but no complaints. The bathroom was good with a nice shower and the bathing tub too. The town shutdowns by 6pm so I would have loved more channels on the TV. The best part is the breakfast. The Suriname chef there was very welcoming ,friendly. He speaks a little Hindi too. As I say the hotel is well placed everything in the town for regular needs are at walkable distances which made my life easier.

My third (or maybe fourth) stay here. Large spacious rooms kept very clean. The decor is a bit dated but in a quaint way and certainly not shabby. Can't comment on the value as I never see the bill since the client I am visiting always picks it up.

We stayed there for one night, while with our motor touring club. The hotel is quite big and is integrated with a theatre. We did not use that facility, though. Décor is grand and somewhat luxurious, although it does not fully translate in the rooms themselves, i.e. in the quality if the beds and the amenities.

The hotel is in the middle of Almelo, a small city in the east of The Netherlands. From the hotel you can easily stroll into the city centre, which is quite ok, though a strange mix of old and new buildings.

The restaurant is super, with a very nice garden that is beautifully situated in a green environment. Inside, a classical high-ceiling room – marvellous! The breakfast room is spacious. Hotel rooms are also spacious and tastefully fitted, though somewhat dated. Finishing in the bathrooms is so-so and reflects the older Van der Valk style (“must look good, not be too expensive”). We had breakfast and dinner in the hotel and both were outright good.

The drawback is in the beds: linen is aiming at arctic conditions, even in summer, and synthetic, pillow and all. Enigma, enigma. For me that is nightmarish, as it deprives me of a good rest, so I woke up broken. As I consider the bed as a basic feature that just must be right, certainly in a so-called 4-star hotel, my rating is not as high as it could have been.

Room Tip: Choose a room at the back, as though traffic frequency is not a real issue at the front, street nois...

Review based on a one-night stay but we have stayed here frequently in the past. Don't bother with the parking garage, nip-round to P3 and park there. costs a bit but the hotel's garage is small, cramped and a dent/scratch just waiting to happen. Check-in smooth and efficient, room large, bathroom even larger. rain-shower more a drizzle shower, basic amenities (I hate those soap dispensers), no bath-oil for the bubble-bath, beds way too soft and hardly any support. room quiet and quite pleasant. Was a party going on but no sound reached the room.

Breakfast was great (lovely coffee), ignore the pre-fab scrambled eggs (is that really necessary? pre-fab scrambled eggs YECH!) go for the fresh eggs. plenty of variety and plenty of choice! Really a plus!
Did not eat at the hotel (see separate review of ' tapas' bar) or bar. enjoyed the stay and will definitely return.

Room Tip: Try and get a room in the wing (not the main building), these a quieter and away from the maddening...

Stayed one night on business. Rooms were large and bright, bathrooms relatively modern. Beds very soft and unsupportive. Service was a bit surly but ok. Breakfast was good. I would stay again on next visit to Almelo.

It might be a Tuesday. Fill your boots on unlimited ribs.
Located just West of central, one minute from the shops and pubs. Good breakfast, nice staff. Not 5 star but not 3 star if you know what I mean.

Hotel is OK - but I will always try to avoid any hotel that thinks its reasonable today to charge customers 6EU PER HOUR for internet service. (Dont they realise this is a basic requirement today, as important as say hot water to most of us)

They do offer the first 2 hrs free each day, but they are seriously insulting their customers intelligence by charging 6EU per hour after that. Are we back in 1979? Come on guys - you need to do better than this for your customers.... (I think all/most other VanDerValk hotels have free interent now, why is this one different?)

My advice - stay at the HUIS VAN BEWARING Hotel nearby which is a privately-run boutique hotel, which is better, cheaper, much more stylish, more interesting, and has FREE INTERNET 24/7. I tried to stay there this week but they were fully booked this week... Go figure...
