My main reason to visit Amersfoort was to experience the city gate De Koppelpoort, a mighty building that has been largely preserved in its original state, approximately built around 1400. It was successfully used to defend against invaders by throwing hot oil and smouldering malt from a wooden extension at the front of the gate. Take your time to stroll around De Koppelpoort, I am sure it will take you back to medieval times! Another interesting city gate is the Kamperbinnenpoort, situated not far from the St. Joris church.
