Although a grand hotel it has only in the last 20 years become so. It has been transformed in recent years to a 5 star hotel. The reception and the staff were superb and the room large well equipped and nicely decorated. We didn't eat in the restaurant which did seem very highbrow though we never tried it. The hotel is very close to the town centre which is really delightful to walk around.

We stayed in this hotel after a wedding party. Although we live in Utrecht, we wanted to treat ourselves and stay in town, close to our party venue.

Karel V is the only 5 star hotel in Utrecht, it's conveniently located in the city centre, close to the Canals. The decoration of the hotel is rather classic and the rooms are relatively small.
The view on the courtyard was nice, and the building itself is quite historical. That may explain the size of the room.

Although the staff was friendly, room service was quite slow; we waited for almost an hour for our food to be brought up.

Our stay was OK, but we did not experience the wow-factor you would expect from a 5 star hotel. It was just OK, nothing more, nothing less.

This is a historical complex of charming buildings which surround an internal courtyard.
Rooms are big, well furnished and big rwindows allow so much light to enter.
One more favourable point - considering the Duch humid/cold weather most part of the year - is that heating system works incredibly well in the rooms!
Breakfast was assorted and tasty.
It's maybe a bit quite too expensive for a small city like Utrecht but it's definitely worth to stay

We had a two night weekend stay in a classic room in the Roman wing.

The hotel is an easy walk from the Utrecht Centraal station and the hotel website provides helpful directions to reach it from there. The hotel is an attractive mix of buildings, old and new.

We stayed in the new Roman wing, and had a very spacious room, which was well-equipped and smartly decorated and furnished. The bed was particularly comfortable and with good quality bedding and bedlinen. The bathroom had a separate shower, bath, and the toilet was separated from the bathroom. The air-con worked well on a hot weekend, and ran quietly so we could keep it on during the night.

We used the spa each day, which was in the lower ground floor of our wing. It was kept very clean and well stocked. The sauna, jacuzzi and small pool were great to use.

We enjoyed breakfast and afternoon tea at the hotel. Breakfast was in an impressive old dining hall, high ceilinged and with mosaics and chandeliers. Both the breakfast buffet and staff service were excellent.

Afternoon tea was served on the terrace and the hotel really does have a superb large garden. The dining area outdoors was amongst the pear trees and quince trees, and there are lawns and large planted borders around the other buildings, along with a fountain and statues.

Overall, the hotel was a delight, with very professional and helpful service from the staff. The beautiful flower arrangements around the hotel were a lovely touch too.

We stayed in this hotel but as we did not knew what to expect we decided to take one night in this hotel. The first impression of service was something above expectations. Friendly staff and helpful, what else would you want. We got our room in the roman wing which we we brought to by the hotel staff. He should is the room a and told us where the facilities were ( gym, sauna, Turkish sauna, jacuzzi and swimming pool). Not to forget the solarium which is free of use for hotel guests.

The bed is comfortable. The room is clean and has a separate bath and shower. Slippers included and bathrobes. Our room (331) was located just 2 min walk to the elevator that leads to the wellness area. The hotel has a nice garden where there is a fountain in the middle. The area is relaxing although being in the city center. They have a private parking for 15 euro a day. There is a turndown service.

The breakfast served here is top class. You can choose from orange juice to champagne and from coffee to a delicious chocolate fountain to indulge yourself a little.

Full breakfast and complete including champagne, freshly pressed juice orange and others, wide assortment of tea, cold drinks, different coffees, bread, chocolate fountain, boiled eggs of 4 and 7 minutes, scrambled eggs, bacon, fresh fruit, sausage, different cheeses, jam, pastries, fruit salad.

Our advice to you. If you need or want a high quality standard hotel in the center of Utrecht then Grand Hotel Karel V is your best choice. 3 minutes walk from city center and approx 10 to the train station. Close to restaurants. The famous DOM is just 10 minutes away and if you are lucky you can even see it from your bed room. Best choice if room according to us is the Roman Wing.

Although nothing appears to need renovating, the hotel is just old. Rooms are clean and the hotel is meticulously cared for. Staff is very friendly, breakfast is good, grounds are nice, but the rooms (at least my room...433) was TINY, even for European standards. A/C is available, but even when left at full blast for 5 full days, the room did not get below 20 (I like it cold). Plus, there are no screens on the windows (typical for Europe?? Not sure), but leaving the window open led to me being attacked by mosquitos; probably my fault for not thinking...but just a warning.

Hotel is in a nice area, close to shopping and restaurants, and very close to the train station. Note that all shops close by 6 or 7 in Utrecht, except on Thursdays.

I stayed at the Grand Hotel for a week pretty much and would love to go back soon. Its not one of those places you get tired of anytime soon. Utrecht in itself is a lovely city and the staff and surroundings of the hotel added to the excellent experience. It is reasonably priced for a Grand Hotel and the breakfast is incredible. Too bad (and potentially good) that not too many guests use the gym, sauna, jacuzzi and whirl pool facilities - my partner and I felt like we had our own personal facilities! If you want to have dinner here, be sure to book in advance (2 days before at least).
