“Perfect location, but beds need upgrade”
Reviewed 31 August 2014

With its easy access and parking, this hotel is perfect for a weekend getaway by car. The impressive park is a true oasis in the middle of the city, which you can access through the back entrance in a minute's walk--literally! Staff was friendly and helpful, and the room we had was clean, spacious, and tastefully decorated to match the historical reference. In-room breakfast was perfect and copious. The only thing we were surprised by is that a hotel of this class should have spartan--to our taste--beds like these. In our travels to the U.S. and Australia, we have become used to comfy mattresses and toppers in this category. Since our stay dates back a couple of months, maybe the issue has been addressed since. Or maybe it's simply the Dutch Puritan spirit ;-)

Karel V is a five star and well deserved. In a historic building, it is a quiet oasis in the city with excellent service, wonderful room, delicious food.... Everything was just perfect. I was there on a research workshop, but it suits perfect also for leisure trips. Located in historic downtown, a few minutes from the train station with frequent connections all across the central Netherlands incl. Schiphol airport, you should definitely consider it as a meeting point, a conference place or location for a city break vacation.

Room Tip: Ask not to get a room close to the elevators, and ask for a room towards the courtyards.

Having just returned from a business event at this hotel I am glad to report that the hotel staff were exceptional and polite. The Hotel is well located and has lovely grounds. I stayed in the Roman Villa complex and had a couple of good nights sleep although I did encounter significant amount of hair stuck to the wall of the shower cubicle. Also my colleagues in the main hotel did report significant disturbance from the constant chiming of the clock bells all through the night. The food served was very good and there is a lot to commend about this hotel but the hair in the shower and noise experienced by my colleagues means I can not rate it as highly as I would like despite the great and friendly service.

Room Tip: Avoid the Belfry and rooms near the clock and bells

Although a grand hotel it has only in the last 20 years become so. It has been transformed in recent years to a 5 star hotel. The reception and the staff were superb and the room large well equipped and nicely decorated. We didn't eat in the restaurant which did seem very highbrow though we never tried it. The hotel is very close to the town centre which is really delightful to walk around.

We stayed in this hotel after a wedding party. Although we live in Utrecht, we wanted to treat ourselves and stay in town, close to our party venue.

Karel V is the only 5 star hotel in Utrecht, it's conveniently located in the city centre, close to the Canals. The decoration of the hotel is rather classic and the rooms are relatively small.
The view on the courtyard was nice, and the building itself is quite historical. That may explain the size of the room.

Although the staff was friendly, room service was quite slow; we waited for almost an hour for our food to be brought up.

Our stay was OK, but we did not experience the wow-factor you would expect from a 5 star hotel. It was just OK, nothing more, nothing less.

This is a historical complex of charming buildings which surround an internal courtyard.
Rooms are big, well furnished and big rwindows allow so much light to enter.
One more favourable point - considering the Duch humid/cold weather most part of the year - is that heating system works incredibly well in the rooms!
Breakfast was assorted and tasty.
It's maybe a bit quite too expensive for a small city like Utrecht but it's definitely worth to stay

We had a two night weekend stay in a classic room in the Roman wing.

The hotel is an easy walk from the Utrecht Centraal station and the hotel website provides helpful directions to reach it from there. The hotel is an attractive mix of buildings, old and new.

We stayed in the new Roman wing, and had a very spacious room, which was well-equipped and smartly decorated and furnished. The bed was particularly comfortable and with good quality bedding and bedlinen. The bathroom had a separate shower, bath, and the toilet was separated from the bathroom. The air-con worked well on a hot weekend, and ran quietly so we could keep it on during the night.

We used the spa each day, which was in the lower ground floor of our wing. It was kept very clean and well stocked. The sauna, jacuzzi and small pool were great to use.

We enjoyed breakfast and afternoon tea at the hotel. Breakfast was in an impressive old dining hall, high ceilinged and with mosaics and chandeliers. Both the breakfast buffet and staff service were excellent.

Afternoon tea was served on the terrace and the hotel really does have a superb large garden. The dining area outdoors was amongst the pear trees and quince trees, and there are lawns and large planted borders around the other buildings, along with a fountain and statues.

Overall, the hotel was a delight, with very professional and helpful service from the staff. The beautiful flower arrangements around the hotel were a lovely touch too.
