Karel V is a great hotel, truly five star. The staff is very helpful, very well trained and very accomodating, which is not always the case in the Netheralnds. Rooms are generally good size. I stayed there 4 times and had a diffrent room every time, all really good. It's very clean, and if you get a room in the new "roman" wing, the decoration style is great, very designer like, very cosy and luxury. The swiming pool-spa area is really nice. Breakfast is superb, one of the best I ever had in a hotel and I travel alot. Last time their printer was broken, so that was a bit annoying. Couldn't print my boarding pass. The location is perfect for Utrecht, very close to the station, on a quiet street and just 5 minutes from the busiest shopping street. I haven't been to their restaurant but apparently it's award winning. I ordered room service once and the food was ok, nothing special but not bad either. Overall, comparing to most hotels I have stayed in Amsterdam this is a much better choice and worth the 30 min train trip. If you are lucky and book in advance you can get a room for about 140 eur, which is a very decent price for the quality they offer.

This is a good hotel in a good location. The staff are excellent.
The single rooms are a little small, and the deluxe or executive rooms are very large.
Most of the exec rooms - inc the rather odd mezzanine rooms - have fairly thin curtains, which let in the light. That is no good for me, so the next day a very helpful member of staff took me on a tour until we found a room that I liked, with curtains that kept the light out. That is good service. There are some good prices on the hotels own website.

The service was excellent on arrival, our luggage taken to our room in the roman wing, a separate building which includes the wellness center. The aircon was a much needed relief as soon as we were in the room, with spacious bathroom too, all the extra's you would expect, slippers and fluffy robes.

The mini bar was very reasonable in price too. 4 out of our 5 days at the hotel we ordered breakfast in our room, at Euro20 each - whilst the breakfast was very filling it was a bit overpriced and on one of the days breakfast didn't arrive - however this was swiftly sorted.

The rooms were cleaned whilst we were out in the day and again at night a turn down service was on offer, so fresh towels again in the evening. Tip which we suppose is common sense is don't open the windows in the summer as the mosquito's will come in, the hotel is very near to a canal!

We didn't get chance to use the wellness center, and I also found out, on our last day, that there was a salon too. Whilst I feel it was aimed towards business people, we will certainly use hotel again for leisure and was very happy with service.

The location is the best!!

This an excellent hotel with well deserved five stars and friendly unpretentious service. The location in Utrecht is simply perfect and the renovation of the old building has been carried out with care. The rooms in the old part are very large, lush, romantic and welcoming. Breakfast is rich and nicely served until 11.30 on sundays. True it is not a cheap place and a lot of things are extra but I didn't feel as if it was exaggerated. We had a package that included use of the wellness centre (maybe a little small especially the pool) and a fantastic massage.

We found the Grand Hotel Karel V to be a beautiful place of calm. It is located conveniently close to the Central Station and the city center. No need for taxis or public transport. The staff is as you would expect from a 5 star hotel : efficient, friendly and professional. The hotel is situated in an old monestry and that makes staying there into a special experience.

The only negative note to make is the swimming pool which is really not a swimming pool at all. It is basically a big bath tub without any possibility to swim.

This was our second visit in a superior room (in the main building). The rooms were large, with nice high ceilings and comfortable beds. Most of the hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is located close to the railway station and the centre of Utrecht.

The small downsides were that the buffet breakfast wasn't as good as we remembered it from our previous visit, and was a bit pricey at 20 Euros - also the service wasn't as good here as in the rest of the hotel. As usual in Dutch hotels the bathroom was rather utilitarian, but the towels were good and they were refreshed in the evening.

We would stay here again, as it's the best hotel in Utrecht.
