“Make sure you hire/bring a bike with you!”
Reviewed 4 August 2014

Utrecht is the best city in the Netherlands - simple as that. It is a perfect balance - not as busy as Amsterdam, for example, or as touristy. The canal network is a dream to explore - especially on a bike, which the city is designed for like no other. On a bike you are king of the road, not the car!

There is also a night-time trail to follow around the town, which again is best done by bike - and not to be missed as its full of surprises, including a number of light displays.

“Old and New Canals”
Reviewed 4 August 2014

The Old and the New Canals peacefully traverse this city with the usual flow of water traffic. It's actually interesting as the canals here have a canal within the canal. On the first level below street level you will find doorways leading off the canal footpath into little shops and restaurants. These are accessible by wooden stairways leading down from street level. Looks quaint but not sure what happens when the water levels rise in the actual canal.

“Pleasant way to spend an afternoon or evening”
Reviewed 3 August 2014

Utrecht is a gem; it is a little more laid back than Amsterdam. There are several shops and cafes/restaurants along the canal. There are also some places to just sit and watch the world go by. On any day, you will find street performers and musicians in different locations along the canals area. There are opportunities to rent both boats and bikes to tour through the area.

“Nothing fancy.”
Reviewed 19 July 2014

They're basically just canals, not much can be said. There was a fair bit of debris in them in the areas I saw, but this could have been caused by the King's Day+Night celebrations, I'm not sure. There's nothing fancy about them or visually shocking. Not ugly, but not beautiful either. Disappointing when compared to the rest of Holland.

“Romantic”
Reviewed 19 July 2014

Utrecht is a romantic area with many canals and restaurants. The restaurants are nothing to brag about however the scenery is beautiful. Actually, I was expecting Amsterdam to be a bit more like Utrecht.
