“Maple leafs in the heart of Holland”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 June 2013

The "Plataan" is as a hotel should be. It has the comfort and quite a bit of a modern business hotel, PLUS that it has wonderfully incorporated environment-friendliness in it's management by using the maple leaf as a theme throughout the hotel. While the "standard" rooms already are great, with comfortable beds, a good shower andd connection to a rapid internet site, you may select, for a little extra, a special room with features that are clearly explained in the lobby. The friendly staff will be happy to guide you through. You may sit on the terrace in the maple leaf's shadow, and enjoy one of the many beers that are on draught. The location is excellent - the hotel is located in the midddle of the historical center, and the major touristic sites are within walking distance.

Room Tip: For a little extra, you may choose an upgraded room with a special theme. The rooms at the 3rd floor...

It was most different from all the other conventional hotels that I have stayed in before. The laid-back welcome, uniquely decorated rooms, and good location in the centre of things made my experience an enjoyable one. Enjoyed my breakfast in the front lounge each morning-its ambience and warmth was very welcoming. Met many interesting fellow travellers during breakfast. The bathroom in my standard room was tiny though, but typical of many European hotels, I'm told.

Tulip Cycling.com organized this hotel for us.
Tulip Cycling.com, Peter, had great bicycles and service - we totally recommend them.
I love a lift big enough for me and my suitcases!
Location - Easy walk to town and across from a small park, and beside a bridge/canal - Great!
Room - Bathroom has automatic in-floor soft blue lights, so no need to turn on a really bright light to use the toilet at night! The toilet + shower room is delightfully unique.
Hotel de Plantaan tops my list for Delft and nearby areas.

You will either love ( as we did) or hate the decor. It is kitsch and that is its charm, from the individual decorations in each room (ours included a sea-gull from the ceiling) to the general ambience, the cow on the landing. The front lounge is a great place for relaxing and enjoying a drink, either before or after dinner. They also serve breakfast here – typical rolls, meat and cheese with some cereals. The location is first class, on the edge of the old town area and in easy walking distance to all the main sights. The hotel provides parking and excellent wifi.
The bed was excellent as was the spa bath, but due to the nature of the building our shower was a little cramped. Towels were approaching the end of their life. Only the most basic toiletries. The lift is an experience, it is small and fits in the middle of the original staircase.
Who should stay here – those wanting a unique hotel experience, and tired of the blandness of the chain hotels. If you don’t have a sense of the absurd and want to avoid surprises this is not for you.

Room Tip: Take a theme room

I've looked at some of the reviews for Hotel de Plataan and thought could we have stayed at the same establishment? We were most disappointed. This old hotel has a great central location, has excellent green credentials and from the outside seemed promising. The laid-back lounge area with bar and comfy armchairs didn't disappoint either. However, the rest of the hotel with its individual themed rooms and landings, with walls and ceilings depicting oceans, starry skies, gods and goddesses, hieroglyphics and African jungle life is definitely an acquired taste. For me, it was simply kitsch, far too personalized and let down the integrity of a fine old building. Though we chose a non-themed room, this again had the owner(s) unique stamp: florid landscape covering one entire wall, synthetic bed headboard carved in the form of a giant leaf and the transparent glass wall of the shower/ WC coyly daubed in hand-painted coloured leaves with fake plastic (?) tree growing up and out into the room.
For us this 3-star hotel (120 euros with tourist tax) does not represent value for money. We missed complimentary toiletries, only one hard (as opposed to fluffy) towel each, one lumpy pillow each, no top sheet just a thin duvet on a narrow bed and a wardrobe not long or wide enough for more than a night or two. The Dutch breakfast buffet was varied but served from a small corner of the lounge bar, so even with a few people it felt cramped. The young man left in charge was clearly out of his depth: failing to replenish empty platters and milk jugs or top up coffee and tea cups. .
To sum up, facilities and style more in keeping with a B+B than a hotel.

We arrived early hoping to be allowed to leave cases there but were given our room key instead . Nothing is too much trouble, it seems - a friendly welcome at all times of day. Breakfast was plentiful and being able to squeeze own orange juice lovely. Room comfy and quirky, great sleep thanks to a quiet area and yet views of New Church. very nearly perfect! Highly recommended

The place is very nice, especially a historic tree in front of the hotel and nice decorated. The theme rooms are excessively decorated, paintings everywhere and a nice and comfortable bed. But the ceilings of many rooms on the top floor are curved in and I am not really a fan of it. The location of the hotel is the best, you can each for all the landmarks in walking distance. Its nice to spend the evening out in Delft
