“A well hidden surprise.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 November 2013

The Dordrechts Museum is a well hidden, but pleasant surprise. Located in an ordinary city street it suddenly presents itself in a building with undeniable grandeur. The collection of art is worth a visit and the museum café serves nice snacks after your tour.

“Surprised by this large museum in the old part of town.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 July 2013

The museum is one of the oldest in The Netherlands, founded in 1842. Since 1904 it is housed in the present building, a former cloister and later a psychiatric hospital. In 2010 it reopened after extensive modernisation and extension. The new and old buildings are well integrated. In front of the museum is a large garden with trees where there is the terrace of the museum’s restaurant.

The collection is nice with some rooms dedicated to local “art heroes” A fare share is dedicated to works from the 19th century Dutch painters including Breitner, Maris and the Oyen brothers from The Hague. It is interesting to see that the works of these Dutch painters are scattered over a couple of museums in The Netherlands. You will find them in museums in The Hague, Amsterdam, etc.

There are some very interesting artefacts in every room one of which is a “peep-box” where you can see the painting “The Eavesdropper” from Nicolaes Maes (1634-1693) re-enacted. Very funny.

The new part has temporary exhibitions on various themes so check the website of the museum for details. When I visited the museum there was an excellent, informative exhibition on the art of educating children.

There is a nice restaurant in the new part with easy chairs which makes you feel that you are in a nice hotel.

When you visit this museum do not miss the “Regentenkamer” (regents) which is a sort of annex at a 10 minute walk from the museum. In this room, which was built in 1701, you can see the pictures of those who were in power in the city in the 17th century. When you are in this room notice the list of names at the entrance of those portrayed.

Dordrecht is one of the oldest towns in The Netherlands and the old part has many well preserved and renovated buildings. Strolling through this part and visiting the museum would give you a nice and quiet day out.

“First class but quiet museum”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2013

I was given a tour in this museum by the mayor and the director of the museum and it was far above expectation.
The collection is beautiful, very well presented. The building is lovely and just renovated. And the restaurant and shop are excellent.
What I liked most was that in several of the rooms they have the studies and sketches the artists made before the final oil painting. It gives you a nice view of how the artists work.

I would highly recommend going to this museum.

“Dordrecht doesn't disappoint”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 February 2013

Newly renovated. It is small compared to the musea of the big cities, but it is worth seeing and the terrace in the garden of the museum is an oasis of green in the heart of this old brick city, where one can enjoy tasty bites; the service is good, too.
