“Out of the way location but very good value for money.”
Reviewed 27 April 2009

Stayed with a mate for two nights on a 241 offer which meant we paid about 35 EUR a night. That in mind the room was in a better condition than expected and actually quite roomy. Bathroom was very clean and certainly overhauled not too long ago. A check-in we were offered an upgrade to an exec room but declined because there were neither smoking rooms nor double bedded rooms available. So the room we had was on the ground floor with the door opening directly onto the parking lot. It felt a bit odd at first but was actually quite convenient because you could load the baggage easily and really air the room from time to time. Can't say much about the service or the other features of the hotel, as we were either in the beautiful city or in the room. The city is a fair walk or a short car-ride away. I think there is a hotel shuttle but not on weekends. But we knew all that before we booked, so for the money we paid and for the purpose of our trip, the hotel was better than expected.

Stayed here for 3 nights over Easter whilst visiting the bulbfields and gardens with friends. The main gardens are 20 minutes drive away which is handy for getting there early to avoid the crowds. The rooms are like a motel rather than a hotel although are comfortable enough. The hotel is in the middle of a buisness park on the outskirts of Leiden and you do need a car to get to and from the Town. The town centre is nice enough with cobbled streets, canals and a variety of restaurantsWhilst car parking is free at the hotel you have to feed meters up to 9pm at night in the centre. The breakfast buffet is good with a nice variety in a very large and airy restaurant. However you must ensure you get a a room rate inclusive of breakfast and that this is clear on any internet booking as the normal charge is 18 euros!

if you're travelling with kids, this is the place for you! ping-pong tables, indoor playground, swimming pool, tennis courts and, at the time of my visit, the kids could eat for free in all the restaurants. plus the relatively large rooms with two double beds would certainly be great for a family.

it was also the place for LOTS of LOUD children when i was there. running up and down the hallways, playing in the courtyard, even feeding slices of ham to the fish in the hotel fountain in the covered courtyard.

this place reminded me so much of motels in the usa - holiday inn, motel 6, red roof inn - only the the whole place has been renovated recently and the open-air areas covered, so you have freshly painted walls, new carpeting and (questionable) objets d'art in a structure which looks like it dates from the 60s and also might blow over if there were a strong wind. the covered courtyard is also where one of the restaurants is located and it has it's own surreal kitchy charm.

the rooms are standard holiday inn fare - aside from a few curly hairs in the bathtub, also very clean. the bathtub was one of the largest i've ever seen in a hotel. the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. the breakfast bufffet was very abundant, though it did cost €18 extra.

the location outside of the city is pretty inconvenient if you don't have a car, but if you do, it's fine. the shuttle service just runs at rush-hour -- otherwise there is a public bus stop nearby or you can call a taxi, which costs about €10 into the city center.

Overall, really nice stay. Great room, lovely breakfast. However, avoid rooms overlooking the inner courtyard restaurant as the noise of the fountain throughout the night and the breakfast preparations at the crack of dawn can be a little disturbing. Swimming Pool was a big bonus, but is popular with children, who in these parts seem to stay up way past their bedtime. A late night sauna visit was ruined by hoards of children banging the door and shrieking at the tops of their voices at quarter to eleven at night. I blame the parents, not the hotel.

Stayed for a week in Feb. Rooms good, bed comfortable, shower excellent, TV poor signal.
Expensive and internet connection costs extra - very poor!
Buffet food good but very expensive.
Pool suitable for kids but not really big enough for exercising in.

Can only recommend if your company is paying.

The Holiday Inn is good for families with children, and business travelers but not a great touring location. The hotel is on the outskirts of Leiden, not within easy walking distance of the main square. The hotel offers a free shuttle during the week (hotel to train station only), but it runs during the day only, ending around 6:00pm. It is really meant for business travelers going to and from the train station and not to get people into town and back. It is also within walking distance of a bus transfer station, but we never used it.

As mentioned in other reviews, there is free parking at the hotel, unusual for the area. There is a large pool, small gym, tennis courts (extra charge, indoor and out) and squash courts (extra charge). There is also a playroom for kids. On Friday and Saturday nights, the hotel provides a "nanny' in the playroom, for parents to get a little time to their selves.

The only choices for eating, aside from room service, are the nightly buffet (can order off a menu, but never saw that) or the bar. The buffet is expensive, but kids are free. Two nights a week they have an "Italian" buffet, I do not suggest it. The other nights the buffet was fine, but pricey. The same location is used for the breakfast buffet. Breakfast is the exactly the same every morning, but not bad. Choice of cold meats and cheese, various breads and cereals, local "pancakes", juice, coffee/tea, milk, fried eggs only, no real option to "cook to order" . It is fine if included in your room rate, expensive if not. There is also the Ocean Bar, which serves food at dinner, also a little pricey. Outside of that, and a McDonalds within walking distance, dinning means a car ride.

There is also a sauna and small gift shop. One thing to keep in mind, the pool is used for local swim lessons on the weekend, so using the pool during the day is can be an adventure.

If you are coming to Leiden as a family, and looking for North American standards of quality, cleanliness etc. this is the place for you! The hotel rooms are set in tiers around a very spacious courtyard. While the noise in the courtyard can be heard in the room(s), it is not too loud. The place has a very good breakfast buffet, and holds a lot of attractions for the kids - ponds, pool, play area, and is great for active children - even tenis courts are there.
However, if you are looking for a romantic getaway or being close to the 'action' of Leiden, this is not going to work for you, as you definitely need access to a vehicle (rental or taxi) to get to town.
Our stay was comfortable, and the staff was more than accomodating to all our requests and questions.

  • Liked — Spacious hotel with a lot of room to let the kids run around. Friendly, helpful staff.
  • Disliked — Lack of easy access/distance to the centre of town.
