“Ok for a place to sleep with free parking and good wifi.”
Reviewed 10 December 2009

My wife and myself stayed there for a total of about 4 weeks in April & May in 2009. If you have a car thats great because you will need one to get to anywhere else in Leiden from the Hotel. The parking is free but on the busy weekend you might have to park your car away from the hotel a bit. Buffet breakfasts were great and was included in the price of my booking. The rooms are quite small and the bathroom is tiny. Reception Staff are very pleasant and try hard to ensure you are satisfied. WiFi Internet worked very well. The only thing that was not up to scratch was the room cleaning. The bathroom was never serviced properly. Either not enough toilet paper or no soap or no clean towels. And the room was only vacuumed if the girls felt like it. Tea and coffee facilities were provided in the room but the girls kept forgetting to top up the supplies. We were forever going down to reception to get something the girls forgot to provide. In the end they gave us a complimentary bottle of wine for all the trouble. I would stay there again but make sure you book on the internet because if you book at the hotel the prices are a lot dearer. We paid about 83 euro's a night including breakfast by booking thru the web. If you book at reception it is 100 euro's a night . . go figure?

This is a pleasant hotel, no problems at all.

It is not too great if you don't have a car though. Walk along busy highways, across a bridge.

Stayed June 2006

Seeing as the Netherlands is a popular tourist spot and Amsterdam was booked up, my husband and I considered ourselves lucky to find weekend accommodation here. The staff was friendly and the hotel tolerable for someone who will spend most of their visit out and about. If you stay on a Saturday night be warned that there is a lot of noise from the area outside. I was kept awake by thudding disco music until 2am. Whether this is a normal occurrence or not, I'm not sure. The Sunday night was quieter.

There is a pool table and dart board if you get bored. The breakfast is nothing to write home about (in my opinion the coffee they serve could fuel a tanker) and I can't comment on the restaurant because we had dinner else where.

Our major issue with this hotel was the fact that it is a 10-15 minute taxi ride from Leiden Centraal Station. We felt a bit deceived by the add that makes it sound as if the hotel is on the doorstep of the nearest train station ("The Bastion Hotel Leiden/Voorschoten is situated 5 minutes from the central station of Leiden.") There is supposedly public transport that will get you to the station quickly but even the hotel staff couldn't tell us where to find the stop. The taxi trip equates to about 15 euros one way. Taxi costs will add up if you stay for a few days and travel back and forth to the station on a regular basis

  • Liked — The staff were very friendly.
  • Disliked — The location is not what it's cracked up to be. We weren't even within walking distance of Leiden's town central.
  • Tips/Secrets — We did notice a Golden Tulip hotel that is just down the street from Leiden Centraal Station. If you want convinience, I'd try there!

I stayed at this hotel between March 2006 and June 2006 whilist on business in Voorschoten. Voorschoten itself is a sleepy little place, so for a little more nightlife, catch the 45 bus to Leiden (10 minute trip - costs 1 Euro after 9am).

The Hotel itself has recently had an external refurbishment. Inside, it is clean and well furnished. Breakfast at 10 Euros is good value as it's 'buffet' style and you can really fill your face if you are that way inclined.

Theres a reasonable Lunch and Dinner menu. Whenever I have eaten there, the food has been hot, tasty, reasonably priced and served in a timely fashion.

Over the 3 months I stayed there, I found the staff to be friendly and efficient.

I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel. 63 Euros per night (as per June 2006) represents very good value indeed.
