Themed hotels are not new. More often than not they are no more than flimsy fascards over a boring structure. But the SS Rotterdam is different. It does not just feel like staying on a grand old ocean going liner - it's the real thing! Arriving in a taxi, you suddenly turn a corner and are struck by the stunning vista before you: a beautiful liner towering above quayside. And the charm and authenticity runs all the way through. You can visit the ships vast engine room, stand on the bridge like a ships captain, promenade on the decks, stroll through the ballroom where passengers romantically passed the time as they crossed the Atlantic. But nowadays the Rotterdam cleverly incorporates everything that is required for a very comfortable high quality hotel but one with a reasonable tariff. The rooms are well designed, very comfortable and bright light streams through the portholes. In my room there were also lifestyle magazines from the 1950s. Best of all service levels match the expectations and ethos of fine passenger liner. One downside: location. The permanent mooring for the Rotterdam is some distance from the city centre so the taxi bills can mount up. Finally, the Rotterdam is very busy at weekends with party's and package deals. Recommend a weekday stay if you want time and space to savour a very special experience.
