“Special place not stay, back in history”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 May 2014

Sleep-ing On a former cruiseship is a special thing. This large ship has many rooms and takes you back in history. Everything reminds you to The years travelling was something FOR The happy few.
You want to have a Nice meal that Goes with The same history? Go to The hotel New York!

Room Tip: If possible, take a room with a few. The skyline is best to bes een from The backside of The ship

If you want to have tasty food, good service but mostly an unusual place to have dinner, than SS Rotterdam is highly recommended.
The menu has good variety. We were 8 colleagues, ordered 6 different dishes, everybody was happy :-)
Meat and chicken dishes are served plenty, but fish dishes were slightly under dosed.

Stayed for two nights for a business meeting (also on board). Cabin was reasonable size, clean and well appointed with usual amenities including a mini bar. Pleasantly surprised with number & siting of power outlets (sometimes a challenge even in major 4* + hotels). Fairly large en suite bathroom with walk in shower. Conference / meeting room facilities were good. Only had breakfast & lunch on board and found food of good standard. Staff efficient and helpful. Transport to from ship was good and large car parking area. However there is also a dedicated water taxi pontoon at rear of ship providing easy access to other parts of Rotterdam, hotel reception can order taxi at moments notice.
Also took a short guided tour of the ship which was very interesting and explained the ships history (former Holland America Cruise Line ship before conversion to a floating (but fixed to shore, so motion problems & no worry of sea sickness!) hotel. Guides, I think, are all people who worked for Holland America and some who sailed on their cruise ships including SS Rotterdam.
Really enjoyed my stay.

Spent one night on board. Good welcome and willingness to sho different room types.
I preferred th Bshamas style room and enjoyed the decor . Unfortunately interior and restauration is un consistent stylewise and unfortunately in many areas the mid century has been badly combined with very poor and styless furniture and decor.

I found bfast overpriced at 19,00 eur x person for the variety and quality offered.
Had dinner on board but both messy service and foodwas disappointing. Menu shows either old fashion fatty buttery creamy dishes or very simple eatery like dishes.
Worth a visit but for food i suggest visiting other cafe and restaurants in the area .

We spent a couple of hours on this opulent cruise liner which sadly now sits in the harbour of Rotterdam and serves as a Hotel and Restaurant but it is still fabulous. From a bygone era. The extravagant and plush interior shows a much wealthier side of travelling to your usual boating experience which is probably why trips stopped in 1997.
However the tour on board was very good and although in Dutch great fun , i sat in the Lido enjoying coffee and gorgeous carrot cake reading my kindle whilst my husband did the engine tour which was fascinating but again difficult to understand but the audio was in english .
The liner is also a hotel and the prices looked very reasonable and the rooms gorgeous so next time i think we will stay overnight. Staff very friendly helpful and spoke english.

A pleasant weeks conference onboard the SS Rotterdam.A cabin as a room and all very comfortable. The rooms are real cabins and retain a lot of the old charm. Port hole instead of a window great. All meals except breakfast were buffet so very average to good. Breakfast was good in the Lido restaurant self service but sets you up for the day.Bars at night were busy and its only a short walk to local bars and eateries.Staff and service were top notch with a porter in uniform on the gangway. All vey charming and a wee bit different from the norm.
Would go back for a stay with the missus if in the area.

The ss Rotterdam is the legendary former flagship of the Holland America Line (HAL), which – from 1959 to 1971 – made transatlantic crossings between Rotterdam and New York, later becoming a five-star cruise ship with trips to far-flung exotic shores. In 2008, she returned to her home port of Rotterdam and was transformed into a floating hotel, with onboard restaurants, bars and business facilities.

There are 254 Rooms – Superior, Deluxe and Executive and Family – in three different styles: Original, Manhattan and Bahamas. We stayed in the spacious Executive Room (Original style) on the Boat Deck overlooking the bow of the ship which had a simple, authentic and functional 50s style (with a modern bathroom). And because it was fairly quiet at this time of the year, we pretty much had the adjacent deck to ourselves and were able to take in vistas of the city skyline at night from the comfort of the stylish lounge chairs.

Every staff member we encountered during our one-night stay was super-friendly and there really was a great atmosphere on board.

TIP 1: We chose to dine at the Lido Restaurant which had superb fare with plenty of choice on the menu but in hindsight, we wished we'd gone à la carte – purely for the more personal, upmarket and quieter experience (Lido is great if you come with a young family, however). We had also reserved a table by the window at the Lido in advance (a must!) but they had all gone when we arrived (my only tiny complaint about the whole experience). Anyway, I have to say it was wonderful to dine onboard and retire to our room by way of a nightcap at one of the ship's bar, without the hassle of travelling across town. So I recommend exploring Rotterdam during the day but returning to 'La Grande Dame' for dinner. I also suggest downloading the menus for the restaurants before you head here (see TIP 2).

TIP 2: Reviewers also complain about the lack of wi-fi in the room/onboard. We were fine with this because we mostly got to 'switch-off' but when we did want to look things up online, we could, having Dutch mobile phones. For visitors outside of the Netherlands, I imagine this is frustrating. It also means that guest will share less images/experiences on social media during their stay here so the ss Rotterdam would actually benefit from a more extensive wi-fi network. I hope they do introduce this in the not-to-distant future.

TIP 3: A few reviewers complain about the location. I actually don't think it's that far out (certainly as the crow flies) and feel it's still in the heart of the city. Just budget a little extra and take water taxis to and from the ship to ‘mainland’ Rotterdam – they're fun and a great way of getting around. There's also tuk-tuks which serve the ship, so jump in one of those for a novel experience which I imagine is cheaper than a regular taxi. The prices for rooms are actually very reasonable compared to most hotels of the same quality in Rotterdam so this somewhat makes up for it. For two of us travelling from the ship to the shore it cost about €10 each.

TIP 4: Finally, don’t forget to visit the nearby Hotel New York, formerly home to the HAL offices – best reached by water taxi. You can also hop off the faster Spido taxis there and switch to HNY's charming wooden craft to take you on to the mainland.
