“Hotel Rotterdam - Rotterdam”
Reviewed 23 June 2012

This is a small hotel 10 minutes from the Central train station. Very central and great location. Include breakfast. The wifi is spotty and unreliable but it is free. The staff are very helpful and accomodating. Get friendly help with the in-room safety deposit box and the need for the North American electrical plug converter. Room is spacious for Holland standard and clean. Travelling anywhere is easy, you can take the tram across the street to travel around Rotterdam or to visit other cities, you take the train - which is only 10 minutes away, even if you carry wheel luggage is still possible to walk... Highly recommended

Room Tip: we booked through the internet and got the top floor. No noticeable noise.

Having read other reviews on this hotel we really did look forward to our stay here, sadly the hotel came no where close to living up to our expectations.
First impression was a very large very impersonal lobby, more like an airport departure zone than a hotel.
Next, when we got to our room we were amazed to find that their idea of a modern trendy bathroom design is a most alien idea to the average British traveler. The toilet and shower room were well enough decorated but we were extremely disappointed to count at least 6 cigarette burns on the sink surrounds. As for the modern design, they can forget it! The toilet door is a complete sheet of opaque glass that you can actually see through when the light is on - the door swings both in and out, has no handle or form of locking and no way of obtaining any sort of privacy at all. Although we took photographs of me posed above the bidet to show the effect of the glass door we did not infact use the bidet as it was blocked with tissue when we arrived and no one seemd to know what to do about it!
Considering the room was en suite I took to going down to the lobby to use the toilets which had as much charm as your average swimming pool but at least you could shut and lock the door.
Our room should have been comfortable enough but the air conditioner did not work. I drew a picture of the controls which have two buttons, took this to reception with the printed instruction which said select the middle button etc and asked exactly which out of two is a middle button? She explained how to work it, we followed her instructions and never did get the temperature to drop.
I did try to open the window to let some air in however I then discovered that our window, hidden behind two pairs of curtains was actually a sealed unit that could not be opened and did not in fact have an outside view it looked out to the reception area a few floors below. No wonder the room was as dark as the black hole of Calcutta , the low wattage lights we had to put on during the day did not come close to giving enough power to read by!
Lastly, although our room was non smoking and didn't smell too bad, the corridors and hallways actually stank of smoke constantly, presumably it rose from the lobby.
Would we stay here again? No , I would not and would not recommend anyone else stay here either!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with an outside window and a solid toilet door if you value light and privacy.

We stayed 2 nights at this hotel, and enjoyed our stay. On arrival we were asked if we wanted to upgrade (for an additional cost) which we did, our room had a view with Rotterdam in the distance, the room was a good decent size and the bathroom a good size also. We had tea/coffee making facilities and the tv had a good selection of channels. We were able to park our car for free and we caught in the bus into the centre of Rotterdam which was easy to do and about a 15 minute ride. We were able to purchase a Rotterdam welcome card at the hotel which provided us with a pass for travel on the buses, trams etc. All staff were friendly and helpful and spoke good english. We would stay here again.

Like the other Rotterdam vdValk-hotel (Ridderkerk) this property wasn't originally built by the vdValk family, which explains the smaller than usual rooms and limited diningroom terrace.
Although the hotel is quite new and has nice rooms, we experienced some minor service issues such as housekeeping leaving personal hygiene items from past guests in the bathroom, and waiters taking a slow leisurely pase during dinner, food and beverage prices are above vdVlak averages for less quality. All in all this hotel is far from bad, but we are used to much higher vdValk standards. I hope management will soon be able to cure these growing pains, so I can rate it as very good after my next visit.

we use this hotel whenever we are in the Rotterdam area. It is clean, good quality 4 star hotel, at about 3 star costs. We went through otel web site for the booking as it was one of the few sites which offered breakfast included in the price.

Also it does offer rooms for smokers, and the one we got was exceptionally large and on the 1st floor. It also has tea/coffee making facilities, and a small fridge in our room.

The staff are excellant and in our experince are helpful at all times. It also offers on site free parking, but is only about 2 miles from the city if that, and there is good public transport & taxis if you wish.It is also close to the motorway systems arounf Rotterdam, and can be accessed easily from the Hook / Europort. It is also next to the zoo, so it offers something for the children.

Next door is sports swimming centre, but thi has to be paid for separatly

The breakfast choice is exceptional and is self service,

It is by far i think one of the best hoterls in the Rotterdam area, and where possible we will always try & use it.

Enjoy it if you have the opportunity

We booked an ultra last-minute room (one day in advance) through a priceline-like website. Upon check-in, we discovered that the room we booked is only suitable for 2 persons and upgrades/requests are based on availabilities and due to the peak week-end they don't have any extra bed left. Hopefully the staff was wonderful and found out a solution directly, we had to pay 10 Eur to upgrade to a superior king room so our child could sleep with us. The breakfast was great, lots of choices, high quality products. Location of the hotel is also good (free parking), convenient to visit Rotterdam, the Hague or Scheveningen (the most popular beach of the Netherlands near The Hague).
In conclusion, we had a great deal and enjoyed a lot our stay at the Van der valk Rotterdam Blijdorp. Thumb up to the staff who managed to solve so fast our problem.

Advice: prepare in advance when you want to visit most cities in the Netherlands, they all hate cars (park your car in one of their P+R and take a public transport (bus/tram) to reach your destination or prepare to pay at least 15 Eur a day to park your car in-town, parking garages are cheaper than parking on street !)
