I stayed here with my partner, we were very surprised at how far from the centre of Rotterdam it was. Our room stated view of Rotterdam Skyline on the internet - you sure do if you can stand on your toes to look thru the window!
Check in was very formal and non friendly, the Receptionist made an issue that we were a gay couple which was very embarrassing as others were checking in at the same time. Unfortunately our experience got worse every time we left or entered the hotel as the Receptionists WATCH every step that you make - it was not friendly, it felt like security!!
The hotel was itself nice, but I was so uncomfortable that I was very close to checking out and moving to another hotel, the Reception should learn some manners and in a gay accepting country such as Holland they should be a little more accepting themselves.

We stayed here for 4 days and had a wonderful time. Among the many positives:
1. Excellent breakfast, including self-service coffee and a wide selection of meats (including smoked salmon)
2. Attentive service, from the restaurant to the reception
3. Low priced bike rental
4. A location nearby several parks and only 10 minutes biking from the city center
5. Free internet, which I'm sure isn't the case at similar nice hotels in Rotterdam

The only drawback would be of course location, as this place is set a few minutes away from town center. But in the end, I think my wife and I lucked out staying here.

My partner and I stayed at this hotel for five nights whilst travelling around the Netherlands.

Positives:
The room was cleaned regularly.
The hotel is close to the motorway network.
It's not too far to walk in to the centre of Rotterdam (approximately 30 minutes).
The exterior of the hotel, lobby and restaurant areas are well presented.
The food served in the restaurant was better than I expected.
Parking was not a problem.
It was quiet in the hotel and bedroom.

Negatives:
The bar staff overcharged us twice (to almost double the actual cost of the drinks we had), we only discovered this a few days later when we had a meal in the restaurant and were given a menu with the drink prices listed in the back.

The bar staff allowed other guests to charge drinks to our room - we were presented with a bill from the bar when checking out of the hotel - it made for an uncomfortable confrontation at the end of our stay. Thankfully the reception staff took our side (obviously it's happened before).

The restaurant service was poor, the waiter completely forgot about us after serving the main course.

The hallways and rooms are looking a bit tired (light fixtures not working, ripped walpaper etc) and could do with some minor refurbishments.

There is a strong smell of cigarette smoke in the hotel. Similarly there were cigarette burns in the en suite sink.

Overall the impression is that the hotel used to be quite impressive, with modern facilities and decent food served in the restaurant, however standards have slipped and poor service combined with a lack of maintenance will see the hotel ratings drop.

This is a small hotel 10 minutes from the Central train station. Very central and great location. Include breakfast. The wifi is spotty and unreliable but it is free. The staff are very helpful and accomodating. Get friendly help with the in-room safety deposit box and the need for the North American electrical plug converter. Room is spacious for Holland standard and clean. Travelling anywhere is easy, you can take the tram across the street to travel around Rotterdam or to visit other cities, you take the train - which is only 10 minutes away, even if you carry wheel luggage is still possible to walk... Highly recommended

Room Tip: we booked through the internet and got the top floor. No noticeable noise.

Having read other reviews on this hotel we really did look forward to our stay here, sadly the hotel came no where close to living up to our expectations.
First impression was a very large very impersonal lobby, more like an airport departure zone than a hotel.
Next, when we got to our room we were amazed to find that their idea of a modern trendy bathroom design is a most alien idea to the average British traveler. The toilet and shower room were well enough decorated but we were extremely disappointed to count at least 6 cigarette burns on the sink surrounds. As for the modern design, they can forget it! The toilet door is a complete sheet of opaque glass that you can actually see through when the light is on - the door swings both in and out, has no handle or form of locking and no way of obtaining any sort of privacy at all. Although we took photographs of me posed above the bidet to show the effect of the glass door we did not infact use the bidet as it was blocked with tissue when we arrived and no one seemd to know what to do about it!
Considering the room was en suite I took to going down to the lobby to use the toilets which had as much charm as your average swimming pool but at least you could shut and lock the door.
Our room should have been comfortable enough but the air conditioner did not work. I drew a picture of the controls which have two buttons, took this to reception with the printed instruction which said select the middle button etc and asked exactly which out of two is a middle button? She explained how to work it, we followed her instructions and never did get the temperature to drop.
I did try to open the window to let some air in however I then discovered that our window, hidden behind two pairs of curtains was actually a sealed unit that could not be opened and did not in fact have an outside view it looked out to the reception area a few floors below. No wonder the room was as dark as the black hole of Calcutta , the low wattage lights we had to put on during the day did not come close to giving enough power to read by!
Lastly, although our room was non smoking and didn't smell too bad, the corridors and hallways actually stank of smoke constantly, presumably it rose from the lobby.
Would we stay here again? No , I would not and would not recommend anyone else stay here either!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with an outside window and a solid toilet door if you value light and privacy.

We stayed 2 nights at this hotel, and enjoyed our stay. On arrival we were asked if we wanted to upgrade (for an additional cost) which we did, our room had a view with Rotterdam in the distance, the room was a good decent size and the bathroom a good size also. We had tea/coffee making facilities and the tv had a good selection of channels. We were able to park our car for free and we caught in the bus into the centre of Rotterdam which was easy to do and about a 15 minute ride. We were able to purchase a Rotterdam welcome card at the hotel which provided us with a pass for travel on the buses, trams etc. All staff were friendly and helpful and spoke good english. We would stay here again.

Like the other Rotterdam vdValk-hotel (Ridderkerk) this property wasn't originally built by the vdValk family, which explains the smaller than usual rooms and limited diningroom terrace.
Although the hotel is quite new and has nice rooms, we experienced some minor service issues such as housekeeping leaving personal hygiene items from past guests in the bathroom, and waiters taking a slow leisurely pase during dinner, food and beverage prices are above vdVlak averages for less quality. All in all this hotel is far from bad, but we are used to much higher vdValk standards. I hope management will soon be able to cure these growing pains, so I can rate it as very good after my next visit.
