“Nice place but far from town”
Reviewed 4 January 2013

Stayed there last year in March during the Stocexpo at the Ahoy, thought I had got a good deal with the pricing, but realized the savings in room tariff is spent on taxi rides to the Ahoy. Another detterent is the non availability of eating joints nearby, one needs to hop on the bus( bus stop closeby) and pay the minimum fare of 3 Euros one way to get to the town square. Does not make sense to spend 6 Euros for a 8-10 Euros dinner.

Business takes me up to Rotterdam regularly, and the pricing of this hotel is usually slightly above what is acceptable for my expense-account. However, this is a hotel which largely caters for business people, and in July and August (when business is slow and they have difficulty in filling the rooms) they drop the rates to very reasonable levels. Stayed there twice last Summer, and managed to get a "superior room" for under €80 a night - most of the year the rate is about twice that. Restaurant is a little pricey, but the rooms are large, modern, well equipped and comfortable.
As other reviewers have mentioned, the hotel is situated just next door to the zoo. Don't like zoos, so this was not for me. However, the hotel is also next to a large and pleasant canal, and a very large and spacious park, which is very nice for an after-dinner stroll in Summer.
I will defintely stay at the Vandervalk Rotterdam-Blijdorp hotel again if I am able to benefit from the cheaper Summer rates.

Parking is confusing as theres not actually any set hotel parking. Lobby is very business like but clean and friendly staff. Got to our non-smoking room and realised you can't open a window as it's facing into the lobby so turned straight back round and asked the young chap to change our rooms. He said the only rooms with windows are smoking rooms so we just went with that. So if your a smoker you get the option of fresh air but a non-smoker has to deal with stuffy room and no fresh air! But we got moved with no problems. Smoking room didn't smell too bad and was great to be able to open the window. Went to Rotterdam for one reason, the zoo. Couldn't believe how close it was to the hotel. Restaurant seemed very expensive so we went to the nearest McDonalds! Room itself was comfy and roomy, but like everyones saying the door to the bathroom just swings in and out and there's no privacy at all. I'm confortable having a number 1 with my boyfriend close by but a number 2 ??? don't think so. BUT saying that i'd stay here again as it was reasonably priced but i'd bring snacks next time.

Room Tip: Smoking room has windows which you can open. Non smoking rooms face inwards towards the lobby.

I stayed here with my partner, we were very surprised at how far from the centre of Rotterdam it was. Our room stated view of Rotterdam Skyline on the internet - you sure do if you can stand on your toes to look thru the window!
Check in was very formal and non friendly, the Receptionist made an issue that we were a gay couple which was very embarrassing as others were checking in at the same time. Unfortunately our experience got worse every time we left or entered the hotel as the Receptionists WATCH every step that you make - it was not friendly, it felt like security!!
The hotel was itself nice, but I was so uncomfortable that I was very close to checking out and moving to another hotel, the Reception should learn some manners and in a gay accepting country such as Holland they should be a little more accepting themselves.

We stayed here for 4 days and had a wonderful time. Among the many positives:
1. Excellent breakfast, including self-service coffee and a wide selection of meats (including smoked salmon)
2. Attentive service, from the restaurant to the reception
3. Low priced bike rental
4. A location nearby several parks and only 10 minutes biking from the city center
5. Free internet, which I'm sure isn't the case at similar nice hotels in Rotterdam

The only drawback would be of course location, as this place is set a few minutes away from town center. But in the end, I think my wife and I lucked out staying here.

My partner and I stayed at this hotel for five nights whilst travelling around the Netherlands.

Positives:
The room was cleaned regularly.
The hotel is close to the motorway network.
It's not too far to walk in to the centre of Rotterdam (approximately 30 minutes).
The exterior of the hotel, lobby and restaurant areas are well presented.
The food served in the restaurant was better than I expected.
Parking was not a problem.
It was quiet in the hotel and bedroom.

Negatives:
The bar staff overcharged us twice (to almost double the actual cost of the drinks we had), we only discovered this a few days later when we had a meal in the restaurant and were given a menu with the drink prices listed in the back.

The bar staff allowed other guests to charge drinks to our room - we were presented with a bill from the bar when checking out of the hotel - it made for an uncomfortable confrontation at the end of our stay. Thankfully the reception staff took our side (obviously it's happened before).

The restaurant service was poor, the waiter completely forgot about us after serving the main course.

The hallways and rooms are looking a bit tired (light fixtures not working, ripped walpaper etc) and could do with some minor refurbishments.

There is a strong smell of cigarette smoke in the hotel. Similarly there were cigarette burns in the en suite sink.

Overall the impression is that the hotel used to be quite impressive, with modern facilities and decent food served in the restaurant, however standards have slipped and poor service combined with a lack of maintenance will see the hotel ratings drop.

This is a small hotel 10 minutes from the Central train station. Very central and great location. Include breakfast. The wifi is spotty and unreliable but it is free. The staff are very helpful and accomodating. Get friendly help with the in-room safety deposit box and the need for the North American electrical plug converter. Room is spacious for Holland standard and clean. Travelling anywhere is easy, you can take the tram across the street to travel around Rotterdam or to visit other cities, you take the train - which is only 10 minutes away, even if you carry wheel luggage is still possible to walk... Highly recommended

Room Tip: we booked through the internet and got the top floor. No noticeable noise.
