Just got back from Rotterdam and wanted to write this down while it was all still fresh.
I didn't give it a terrible rating because the people who worked there were really very nice. However, I only ever saw receptionists behind the desk and that was it.
This is a cool place to stay if you like boutique hotels, and I did really like the fact that it was a historical building. That was about all I liked.
Pros: The building itself is super cool.
The water pressure in the showers was great, and the hot water was nice and hot, and cold was nice and cold. Beds were roomy and comfortable.
The restaurant outside is a wonderful place to hang out and enjoy yourself on a hot, sunny day, as we did, and it is convenient to the water taxi pickup stop (this was really special).
Cons: Because the building is very old, there are a few special considerations that really should be taken into account: there are steps leading up to the reception area; so if you are old, or if you have a lot of luggage, you are in trouble. I read a few other reviews where readers were dismayed that they had to hump their luggage up and down the stairs - well, be ready for this. No bellmen.
Also, (again), since the building is old, there is no insulation at all which means that if it is very hot as it was during our stay, you will roast in your room. I can therefore imagine that if it is very cold (as it mostly is in Holland) you will freeze in your room. There is air conditioning, but in the room our daughters stayed in (126) it made the room stink- REALLY badly, so they turned it off and chose to roast. Otherwise that room was really nicely decorated. We stayed in 101, a lovely unique boardroom with paneled walls. The wall to wall carpeting didn't look totally clean, and the Nespresso machine (I was so happy!) water carafe smelled moldy when I went to fill it up (I was so disappointed!).
Be aware that if you book a room here, breakfast is NOT included; this is written in really small type on the reservation confirmation although reception does tell you. I forgot, and we paid Euro 78. for two machine made do it yourself cappuccinos, two small glasses of juice, a horrible doughnut and three delicious croissants with cheese on them. Also, the decor of the restaurant is what Dutch people really love - a bunch of mismatched disgusting uncomfortable furniture eaten in an institutional-feeling setting; with lovely chandeliers hanging over it all as a tragic witness.
I really wanted to trash this place, and I am not going to come back here - but everyone was so, so nice and so, so sweet that I just couldn't. Also, keep in mind that it is Holland - a socialist country where everyone is treated equally. Meaning no special treatment for anyone, lots of DIY and all really extra expensive to pay for the struggling Euro countries, probably.....
I recommend this hotel for people who are traveling on a cruise ship and only have to stay here for one night. And who are nice and strong and can carry their luggage up the first set of stairs (after that, there is an elevator).
