“A nostalgic trip through history.”
Reviewed 4 July 2014

We stayed overnight in the Hotel New York in Rotterdam before boarding the ms Rotterdam on her cruise to Norway. A perfect place to stay, lots of action, great, enormous hotel rooms and a fantastic location.
We had breakfast there with a lot of family members the next morning and everyone was very impressed.

Room Tip: Our room on the first floor was great.

many people do not know that there are more bars and restaurants in Rotterdam than Amsterdam. It is a great city for a short break.
What makes it so special is a stay at The Hotel New York. I have been staying here for over 20 years and it has consistantly delivered. The rooms are spacious and none are alike some with fantastic views the bar and restaurants inside and out are very good value and the standard of food is very high.
Then what better way to start an evening out than a boat ride across the river on one of the hotels wooden launches. Fantastic all the way. Well Done HNY.

The New York Hotel is a perfect place to stay when needing accommodation before boarding a ship. It is a short walk to the shipping terminal. The building was the former offices of Holland America Line. An excellent restaurant and attractive comfortable rooms.

The excellent cosmopolitic atmosphere of the grand Hotel New York Rotterdam, together with its emblematic features of emigration, of embarking and of the starting point of a great journey, significantly contributed to the feast. We enjoyed and are most grateful to the attentive staff of Hotel New York.

Room Tip: All rooms indeed have much character. Rooms with a view from the front perhaps are most enticing.

We spent one night in the Hotel New York, which used to be the headquarters of the famous Holland America Line, the shipping company which helped entire Dutch and other European populations emigrate to America. Ships used to leave from this very pier, and you can now sleep in the company's former offices. A great deal of imagination, humour and attention to detail went into the conversion of the building into a hotel. If you're interested in early twentieth-century architecture, you'll love the period features left in situ, e.g. the staircase, tiling, doors, panelling, etc. We loved our spacious balcony room (and the balcony IS big enough to put two chairs on it); the views over the Maas are stunning. We particularly loved the light in the entire building; the windows are huge, and good use is made of blinds etc. The restaurant and bar are fantastic places too. Housekeeping and cleaning wasn't too conscientious, we thought, and some may feel that the shabby chic look of some wooden detail is out of line with the sense of pride which the Holland America Line stood for, but even so, this is still one of the most interesting hotels that we've ever stayed in. Some members of our family emigrated to New York from this very spot.

Room Tip: Balcony Rooms for best views.

When we arrived the welcome at the front desk was a bit lacking, after we had hauled our cases up the stairs (no concierge) but the hotel itself was quirky, very different and interesting in it's design and history. We booked a balcony room (technically is was a balcony, but not one you could put a chair on!) which overlooked the waterway. It was very different from the average hotel room, with plenty of space, a very comfortable bed, very unusual bathroom, great views and very quiet. Wanted to change some currency at the front desk but they do not offer this service. There is an ATM 400m up the road so went there and collected some Euros.

We ate in the restuarant the first night which was packed and buzzing - great food, a really good atmosphere and excellent service. The waiters and waitresses were great and the restaurant manager took us to a good table and really was concerned that we had a good meal and a good time. Breakfasts were good with plenty of choice, but limited service and quite different from the buzz and cheerfulness of the night before.

We were on a 2 night stop which made a lovely change from the usual city centre hotels. We would go back and stay in the same room..

Room Tip: Worth paying for the view in a Balcony room

Thank you very much for your feedback.
We are pleased to hear that you liked the hotel and our staff.
Indeed, the balcony is not very big, it is a part of the old buidling.
Hopefully you enjoyed it though.
We hope that you will be our guest in the future again.
And please ask for any assistance with you luggage., we will always try to help you with that!
