“Good Hotel with Great Location”
Reviewed 5 August 2011

We stayed at the Tulip Inn in early July, prior to taking a cruise. The hotel location is great, as it is a short walk over the bridge to the cruise ship docking area. It was also quite easy to get to from Amsterdam, first taking a train and then a local bus which stops right out front of the hotel. The hotel staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel does have a restaurant but we told them we wanted to stretch our legs after a long flight from Canada to Frankfurt to Amsterdam. They were quite willing to recommend some nearby restaurants and we were quite pleased with their recommendation. (We never did try the hotel restaurant and so cannot comment on it.) The room was spacious, comfortable and very well taken care of. We had a fantastic view of the harbour. There was a little bit of noise from the transit in front but not enough to be a problem at all. The location turned out to be a bit of a 'bonus' for us as, after checking out, we realized we had some some critical medication (insulin) in the mini-fridge in the room and it was a simple matter to run back to the hotel to ask about it. They first checked at the desk and when they could not find it, called the housekeeper to see if the room had been cleaned yet. As it had not, they gave me a new cardkey and told me to just go ahead and check the room myself. I found the insulin and the total time from the dock back to the hotel and then back to the ship again couldn't have been more than 15 minutes. We would definitely stay here again.

Stayed here for the second time, 5 years apart. Not much has changed, this is still a high quality property offering good service and comfortable accommodation. This time I had a standard room at the back of the hotel, rather than the slightly more expensive "river view" rooms. The room was rather smaller, and had very little in the way of closet space and no drawers for guest use. However, the bed was great, bathroom was small but fine, and the shower and air-con were powerful and easy to regulate.

Breakfast here is excellent, and is served 7 - 10 weekdays and 8 - 11 weekends, very convenient for nightowls seeking a long lie. Coffee machine makes good coffee, hot and cold selections very satisfying.

A great choice in a great location, with the benefit of 24 hour aircon, not offered in most hotels in Rotterdam.

We stayed there for 18 days and got to know the staff very well. They were friendly and very helpful and if there was something we would especially like to eat, the Chef would always try to surprise us with something special, which is unusual on a business trip.
The bathrooms were a little on the small size, but overall, the hotel has a nice cosy atmosphere. We would definitely choose the Tulip for any further business trips.

Room Tip: A room not facing noisy suspension bridge

Pros - view, location, clean, not too expensive.
Cons - small rooms, no parking.

I'd disagree with the previous reviewer - I would consider this for a business stay, although probably not with clients. The hotel is pretty basic. Dusty, musty smelling corridors lead to surprising bright and pleasant rooms. The best feature is the view - straight over the river, with the Erasmus bridge just outside the hotel.

The location is great:
Its a 5 min/10 Euro taxi ride from the CBD
Views over the river are great
Very short walk to some of the more picturesque parts of Rotterdam, with good bars/restaurants.

The drawback is that it isn't quiet. There is quite a bit of street noise - mainly from the bridge which means that you can't escape it by being on the top floor. And the windows are not well soundproofed.

Breakfast was OK - but expensive for what it was.

Contrary to previous reviewers, I was only charged 10€ for broadband wifi - which seems cheaper than most places in the city. Also, there was no charge for calling a taxi.

Staff were pleasant and helpful.

In summary, this was much more interesting and better value than some of the places nearer the CBD, but its a bit rough round the edges.

There are some very good rates available on Expedia and the like for this hotel. If that's all you are paying then the hotel is great value. With breakfast included, it's great value although it is a bit close to the metro/trams across the nearby river bridge, which make an unbelievable amount of noise.

Unfortunately I was on a crazy corporate rate with breakfast an extra 18€, and it was really the basic buffet you get in a Holiday Inn Express (except no juice). The rooms are clean and new, variable in size (mine was quite large for a European hotel, my colleague's slightly below average) but basic. They're not attractive, the TV is small, the curtains are vinyl and don't close fully (letting light in when you're trying to sleep) and generally feel cheap. Wifi is expensive at 20€ for the first night but does get cheaper over longer stays.

The bathroom is small, the fittings are straight out of a public restroom, and the shower in the bath is difficult to access. The staff are totally uninterested in service - and asking them to call a cab attracts a 95 cent fee. (I don't care about 95 cents, I do care about the attitude it implies and having to pay it separately or expense it with my company).

None of the above matters if you want a cheap hotel for a short break but if you're paying full whack (and it'd be difficult for a leisure traveler to do so) you can and should do better.
