Boottocht Rotterdam - Kinderdijk
Reviewed 14 August 2014

They only take cash to sail you from Rotterdam to Kinderdijk. How un-convenient!! A touristattraction in a metropole and not accepting cards?! The tour was nice but not spectaculair. The Rotterdam skyline, seen from te river, is nice as well as well as the windmill-skyline in Kinderdijk. It's a UNESCO-site. The sailingtrip, including 1,5 hour of sightseeing, costs you 4 hours in total. It's rather relaxing being on the river. It's mainly old shipyards, industrial heritage and modern buildings you are pasing by. Do NOT expect they will sail along the windmills. You have to walk to that part from your disembarking point to see them. It's about 10 minutes walkingtime. From there you can book another boat-tour to the windmills.

We took our kids to this area via metro and then a bus . The whole journey took about 70 mins . The bus run every half hourly and it is easy to catch the bus and the information counter staff at the train station are very helpful. Beautiful area, and a must is to visit the mills inside and also the nearby museum.

At the VVV tourist counter, I was introduced to go to the Kinderdijk by boat excursion that departs at noon(reservation is needed and the excursion lasts 5 hours). So I took the Metro from Rotterdam Centraal to Leuvehaven(D line towards De Akkers)station to make my way to the port. The port is just beside the Erasmusburg bridge. Then the confusion comes because there are three boat operators there, the Spido, the Aqualiner and the Waterbus(the boat excursion operator was actually on another port). After asking around, only the Waterbus will take you there the quickest way(due to time constrain)
So I boarded the Waterbus, paid for the Kinderdijk Special ticket at 12.5Euros(with return). After about 20 minutes(2 jetty stop), I was told to change to another boat that ferries to the Kinderdijk(price included in the Waterbus ticket). I give the Waterbus the two thumbs up. A very good deal.

As part of a special promotion (get 2 tickets for price of 1) I took part of this sailing. The ship was fully booked, but due to the nice weather (and outside seats), it was not crowded at all.
Food was for sale at good prices and information during the trip was provided in multiple languages (taped).
After docking in Kinderdijk, a 15 minutes walk was required to get to the windmills. Wheelchair visitors or people not able to walk this distance might miss the windmill higlight (this was not communicated in the brochure). Als directions how to get to the windmills from the ship where not provided.
All in all, a great trip, at a good price.

We originally were going to bike to Kinderdijk, however they say to just follow the river. Well most rivers are not straight so when we finally found the correct bridge to go over it seemed just too long to attempt on day one in Europe.
So day 2 we take the waterbus, what a good idea!
Not only is it relaxing, but you get to see the landscape from the water and observe the harbor activities. We actually take the 9 30am waterbus and were told the second ferry to Kinderdijk will not start till 10 30 am and they suggested we take the next bus. We however decide the take the 9 30 am bus and just wait at the transfer site. This was such a good idea, it was intriguing to watch the comings and goings along the river and the time went very fast. First transfer ferry arrived on schedule.
We rented bikes at the Kinderdijk for E2 50 an hour and had a wonderful time. Spent 2 hours exploring the area.
We returned, via waterbus, the fare of 12 50 euro for waterbus included, round trip waterbus, the entrance fee into Kinderdijk along with the fare for the 2nd ferry. VERY REASONABLE. Also, did not have to think about biking back to Rotterdam.
You cannot go to the Netherlands and not experience Kinderdijk!
