We were in Rotterdam for business meetings and had the weekend off. When we went to TripAdvisor to see what were the main attractions, the Rotterdam Zoo was at the top of the list. As we like zoos, we left the hotel in the morning planning to spend a couple of hours.
When we arrived we first went to Oceania which is the aquarium complex to your near left after the entrance. We first looked at the seals, both from above and through the windows in the tank. We then went into the main part of Oceania. What a marvelous surprise! There was not one, but two huge aquariums with tunnels that went through the center! There were many different tanks with all kinds of fish and other sea creatures. The penguin tank was a lot of fun, watching them waddle around, line up to jump into the water and swim. I think we spent almost our expected two hours in Oceania, and decided to make a day of it.
The outside animal scenarios were beautiful. I most remember the aviaries (more than one), the butterfly tent (you actually walk among the butterflies), the giraffes (they are really beautiful, are quite a few and they get quite close to you), the elephants (both an outside exhibit and a connected cave-like portion) along with a baby which was really cute, the Flamingos (a really large exhibit with quite a number of Flamingos), and Pelicans in a tropical like setting (they had an island with a really large nest on it).
There were many other animals, all in really beautiful settings reflecting their natural habitat.
We spent the entire day and really enjoyed it! By the way, if you do spend the day, the food was better than any we have had at any other zoo.
