“Like staying in a museum”
Reviewed 31 August 2012

The building is amazing. A restored 11th Century monastery with courtyards, old church buildings. Like a museum. It’s been converted into a hotel conference center and the lobby area is very modernized but the place is still extremely charming. The room was recently renovated and spotless, very comfortable, quiet, large flat screen TV, free wi-fi, water bubbler in the hall. It’s about 10-15 minutes walk from the Grotte Markt, the shopping street is only about 5 minutes. The train station though is close to half an hour walk, and while there is a tram stop just in front of the hotel, it requires a change to go to the station.

I did not have any trouble finding it, it's well marked, but you have to walk through an archway on the street and then another one in the courtyard to get to the entrance. And it was a little creepy walking back alone in the dark from the center of town. I don't think dangerous at all, just no people around and the entrance way lights on the timer don't come on as quickly as they might.

It's inside the courtyard of a lovely old mission hospital -- which is part of its appeal but also what makes it kind of creepy at night, especially the statuary, the dark hallways, and the creaky floorboards. Check-in was also hard to find, partly because it closed at 10pm, so we had to pick up a phone to have a security guard let us in when we arrived late. We couldn't get a wifi code from him, so we couldn't take advantage of that perk.

Our room (101) was big enough but not well ventilated, which made sleeping uncomfortable on a warm night. We left the window open, but that meant we got to hear the dumptrucks across the courtyard at 4am. It wasn't entirely clean, either; the wine glasses still obviously hadn't been cleaned since a previous guest had had red wine in them. The breakfast was good, though, and the staff was friendly.

Superb location, an oase of tranquility just in the centrum of Antwerpen. Very good breakfast with a great service. Parking place close-by with a good day price.
Bit difficult to find, interiors slightly out-dated. Need to bargain to get the room you want. Difficult to get a late check-out (1.5 hour) with an almost empty hotel.

We booked this hotel based on the positive reviews on TripAdvisor, so perhaps the expectations were higher than they should be.

The room was small, but clean, and the beds were comfortable. The bathroom was okay and clean, however had a bit of a smell in it. We booked a "shopping arrangement" and read on the internet this would include a free drink in a nearby cafe; however, all we received was a bag with brochures from the tourist board of Antwerp (and a lot of the brochures were about events taking place in 2011) and a parking voucher.

Breakfast was nice and the staff serving breakfast was very friendly and helpful.

However, on the booking.com website which we visited prior to booking, it was mentioned that the rooms would have airconditioning and a water kettle. However, our room did not have either of these and when we mentioned this at the front desk, they replied only certain rooms had those, and left it at that.

All in all it is an okay hotel, well located, but in essence it is a rather basic hotel in a lovely old building. I left the hotel with a slightly disappointed feeling.

Stayed there from 10th June - 14th June

---Good---
1) Free Wifi
2) Clean and neat place.
3) A nice Church and a beautiful garden.
4) Very friendly and helpful staff
5) Nice breakfast served every morning, constantly checking if we have additional needs
6) Near to all the shopping and dinning places. Oh ya.. 15min walk from Theme park

---Bad---
1) A very unpleasent smell from the lift throughout the stay.
2) Very small room, no safe, no fridge ( apparently there were 2 types of rooms)
3) Room service and reception deck only till 10pm -- unreachable all the way to the next day 8am
4) lobby light off after 11pm. Have to walk in the dark flashingur own flash light.

Overall: It's a alright place. The service is good but I will still think twice if I am travelling there again

The Elzenveld Hotel is actually based partly in a 16th century monestary and it has a serendipity charm to it - right in the middle of Antwerpen!

There are various types of rooms available and although I normally stay in more economical rooms, you can do yourself the favour to stay in one of the four suites in the actual monastery wing - the wife and I had a wonderful romantic weekend away there a few years ago.

When alone I prefer the VIP room which has a business approach with desk, free internet, etc. The room is well decorated, modern and with very nice bathroom. The room was clean and fresh when I arrived.

The setting of the hotel is not your normal hotel approach and has a B&B feel to it, but I loved it! The tranquil central garden was also very nice. I personally think that this hotel may not be for everyone - it does not look like a normal hotel and you will love it if you look for something different or creative.

I will however definitely use Elzenveld in Antwerpen again!

Room Tip: I prefer the rooms with a view to the central garden.

The Hotel (do not ask me why it is under B&B) is very well located in a central area of Antwerp. Not too far away from the center (10-15 min.) The botanical garden is some steps away, the central park some minutes away and the Railway station also 10-15 min. away. It has two entries, on on the gasthuisstraat (guest haus street because originally was Guest house, later more). the other on the Hospital (leopold-straat) with parking posibility. As in every modern city parking is a hassle but if you arrive with your car, do not worry there is a parking house close enoung and only for 7 € /day, ask at the reception they will give you a map.

The Hotel and conference center is located in a former Cloister where the nuns which took care of the sick used to live (we are talking 1500's). There is a marvelous Chappel (1622) with a barock pipe organ, only ask at the reception and they will let you in. Of course the whole complex has been renovated but the exteriors are so marvelous, the garden is simply like a post cart idyll (but some times there are some annoying moskitos).

The room (a suite?) had a nice living room with sofas, a desk, a tube TV and a frige (if you need something to fill buy outside or ask in the reception). There is a big bathroom with WC and a bath Tub on a second floor (above the bath) there is a Queen size bed (in reality two single bed). Without the Air Conditioner I think the room would have been too hot because we were at the second (an last floor); I was very happy that the A/C worked too. The bed was Ok, pillows also OK. The internet connection worked well (we did not used extensively).
>>The first warning: to get there you need to climb a steep spiral ladder so if you are not sure on your feets or have vertigo be sure to mention it, perhaps they have other rooms.
>>The second warning: the railing dividing the living room and the second floor is low and not safe for small children.
>>The third warning: yes the moskitos sometimes visit you, the Hotel included the typical raid insecticide in the room.
The breakfast was very good and of excellent quality. It is not as big but everything taste good. A nice coffee machine coupled with an excellent service left no open wishes.
