Charming little boutique hotel in a great location in the center of Antwerp. A block off the riverfront and hardly a block from the Grote Markt and very nearby to great shopping and the Cathedral.

The hotel room itself was quite nice. Rather small and I believe not air conditioned, but was still quite comfortable. Our room overlooked a nice interior courtyard that was available for guests to use. Was quiet while we were there, but a rude guest in the courtyard could certainly change that.

But enough with the nitpicking, the bed, though a split bed in the annoying, yet typical european fashion, was quite comfortable and the shower and bath were quite nice. Our hosts were extremely helpful and accomodating and the common facilities were well kept and comfortable.

The value was very good as well. I found this to be the most inexpensive stay of our trip, and certainly of the nicer places we stayed.

A very enjoyable stay but ensure you have good access if you have difficulty with stairs since there is no lift.
Great attached restaurant for breakfast. The hotel staff gave us an excellent recommendation for dinner.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with no stairs

Located steps away from the Groote Mart and Groen Platz, this is a lovely small hotel whether you're here on holiday or business. Friendly service, spotless room, complimentary beverages, we enjoyed every moment of our stay. Two caveats: no lift and no restaurant altho you do have access to an excellent wine bar that serves a very good continental breakfast to hotel guests.

Hotel Matelote has a lot of character, the staff is fantastic and the location is great. It is on a quiet pedestrian street steps away from the cafes, major sites and shopping. The staff was very helpful and professional. The rooms have a lot of character and feel like a private apartment more than a hotel. The bathroom was amazing -- the nicest of all the places I stayed in Belgium and Amsterdam. The beds and bedding were very comfortable as well.

This hotel is not for everyone though and there are some things to note before deciding to stay here. There is no air conditioning, we were on the top floor with lots of windows (the views were great) so it was very hot. If you wanted to sleep with the balcony door open you had to feel confident you wouldn't get up at night because the doors led off to a small fire escape which then dropped off down three floors - -no gate or barrier. Also, since this is a small hotel there are no elevators - it was fine for us because we didn't pack too heavy. There was a small spiral staircase leading up a floor and then the room we stayed in was up another flight of stairs. Because this is a small hotel there is only staff there during day hours. At night you have a key card to get you in the main door. I was fine with it but if you are the type who likes a full service large hotel this may not be for you.

All in all I loved this hotel and would stay again (just not in the summer with no AC). I wrote the things above not because it was a bad experience but more because this hotel caters to a certain type of traveler and this may or may not be the place for you.

Dear,
Thank you for your review. We are glad you appreciated many things about hotel Matelote, and we understand that the lack of an elevator could be disturbing for some people however, this is why the staff always offers help for carrying the guests' luggage. Please note that we are aware of the airco issue, and we are in the process of ordering and installing airco. It is only a matter of weeks before several rooms will have airco. We look forward to welcoming you again with us.
Best regards,

We spent two nights at the Hotel Matelote, which proved the perfect locale for exploring Antwerp and the ideal place to stay. While close to the major square and cathedral, noise and crowds were not a problem. Because the restaurant of the same name was closed, breakfast was provided a few steps away at the Daily Roast, which proved an ideal setting for people watching--and a wonderful breakfast to boot. The hotel is small--11 rooms, so you get a more intimate experience than at some of the larger chains, but everything is done in a professional fashion, from the rooms to the staff. We have stayed at the Julian, which Matolote compares well to, and at half the price of the Julian, we will stay at Matelote again.

Based on the reviews on TA, I chose this hotel for a long weekend to Antwerp because of the little extra service that a lot of reviewers wrote about.

Right after booking, we got a personal e-mail. However, there was no follow up. I e-mailed the hotel twice for directions where to park but didn't get an answer.

We found out ourselves that the nearest parking garage is about 300 meters away, Parking Garage Grote Markt which costs EUR 17,50 per day.

The hotel is in an excellent location close to the Grote Markt and Groenplaats and within walking distance of almost anything. It is in a cosy little street with a lot of nice cafees and restaurants in the neighbourhood. You are very close to all the action but without the disadvantages of noise etc. We couldn't think of a more perfect location for staying in Antwerp.

At check-in we were informed that we had to go somewhere else for breakfast because the people from Invincible took a break for a week unexpectedly. It would have been nice if they would have e-mailed us beforehand.

The lady at the receptiondesk forgot to inform us that you needed a password for using wifi and also the drinks in the lounge area had to be paid for which used to be free (except for the first drink). No showstoppers and nothing that would really made us not enjoy our stay, but this was not the servicelevel we expected based on the reviews on Tripadvisor.

We had room number 5 which was very nice, roomy and clean. We liked the minimalist style and the view over the roofs of Antwerp. Be aware that there is no elevator and it is three long stairs to the room. A few lights in the ceiling were not working, again not a big thing but it was not the perfection for detail that you can see in the original design.

We reserved an extra bed for our daughter which was a sofa. No problem with that except that this sofa was really short and my daughter had a hard time to fit. We had to ask an extra set of towels because they forgot to put a set for my daughter in the the room

The breakfast was in the Daily Roast, a nice little cafe just 30 metres away in the Hoogstraat. You can get a nice breakfast from EUR 6 and a large or healthy breakfast is EUR 10. It is open on sundays. We don't have experienced breakfast at Invible, but the Daily Roast might be a good alternative for the EUR 16 breakfastbuffet at Invincible.

To conclude, we really liked the location of the hotel and the room. But before deciding to go back in the future, we will take a close look at TA again because the service at the hotel was not up to expectations this time.
