“Simplicity In a Perfect Location”
Reviewed 20 October 2011

Hotel Matelote is tucked away in a small street/alley off one of the busy pedestrian thoroughfares. It is ideally situated in very close proximity to the Grote Market, copious restaurants, cafes, bars, shops and museums. We never needed to take public transit or taxis to any destination we sought out. The hotel is somewhat small. Only 11 rooms. Each one is different, with various art themes throughout. It was very clean, the staff was genial and able to offer lots of dining suggestions. Breakfast is available for an additional charge, wi-fi is free and the staff will gladly make bookings for you. It is not splashy but you will feel comfortable at this hotel.

Room Tip: You might want to select a more spacious suite.

We booked this hotel based on the reviews on Trip Advisor and were looking forward to it. Unfortunately we were very disappointed. We had a room on the top floor which on a positive note was a decent size - you would never get that size of a room in a similar New York City location for the same price. However, as we were taken into the room (by a very friendly and helpful front desk staff - positive #2) I immediately noticed the water damage on a corner of the ceiling and wall. I have bad allergies and that was a bad sign to me - it looked like an active leak. The room had the smell of moisture and the room AC that we turned on did not work that well so it did nothing to take that away. The decor is cool, very modern but the choice of white walls and white rubber floors is not a good one for a hotel. They both showed signs of wear and tear and looked dirty. The room we had faced the street and it was noisey - lots of delivery trucks, etc. And I wanted to keep the windows open because of the moisture issue with the leak.

It is an old building and having owned very old houses myself I understand that leaks happen, etc. But you don't put a hotel guest into a room with a visible leak. The lobby of the hotel did not disappoint and is well done. Unfortunately our room did not match the lobby in quality. I personally could not wait to check out and should have complained but we were there for one night and assumed the hotel was booked - I am also not one to complain. I just decided to grin and bare it. However we had a sleepless night and I woke up the next morning with a one swollen eye (allergic reaction) and a stuffy head.

Its in a very good location and I hope that our experience was an exception.

A buddy and I stayed here for three nights during our European beer tour. The hotel was conveniently located steps away from the square with tons of restaurants and bars. There’s actually I nice local bar located a few doors down. The hotel is sort of hidden down a quiet street which I liked! However, we needed to ask a local where it was. The room was clean and pretty small compared to American standards but average for Europe. We requested two beds but were given a single queen bed. I guess that’s all they had available. The front desk staff was really nice and always said hello and asked if we needed any help with anything. The lobby was very modern and welcoming. Overall, I highly recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Antwerp. PM if you have any questions.

Superb location! 1 minute walk to the "grote markt" and "groenplaats" Helpful and very friendly staff! Serving you with a smile! (thats how it should be everywhere!) Nice breakfast and comfortable rooms with very nice beds and pillows! Looks very modern and clean stylish, yet so charming! They dont got a elivator so people with "problems with stairs" could face a challange. I would stay here again!

Nicely styled hotel with friendly staff, however, we paid too much money for what we got.
This goes for the hotel but above all for the breakfast ... 12 Euros per person for a rather poor continental breakfast.
Should you be looking for an accommodation in this price range, be aware that you're paying mainly for the location which, without doubt, is very convenient.

We booked a Deluxe Cosy room, but were upgraded to a Junior Suite at no extra cost - a real treat. The room was very large, quiet and comfortable with huge windows/patio doors looking out over the Antwerp rooftops and the Cathedral to the side. The large bathroom with free-standing bath was also very luxurious! We loved the hotel's style of having a very modern interior, within a very old and beautiful building.

The hotel is located in a quiet side-street only a minute's walk from the Grote Markt - a perfect location to explore the city.

Agree with the previous comments about the stairs, but don't let that put you off... we were offered help with our luggage and even on the top floor, it really was not that difficult. We had no issues with the temperature of the room or the water pressure as mentioned in previous reviews. We could not find fault at all with the hotel.

If we return to Antwerp we would definitely book the Matelote again... Thanks to the hotel staff for an excellent weekend.

We highly recommend this hotel - everything about it was good, from the extremely friendly and helpful staff to the clean modern design and free drinks in the room - water, tea and coffee. It couldn't be more central, located on a tiny street in the old town with the main square around the corner. We walked from the station (maybe 25 minutes) but there are plenty of buses and the tram. In terms of value for money it is excellent. The big double bed was very comfy. Our room was starting to show the tiniest signs of wear (nothing major), otherwise we would have given it 5 stars. You won't be disappointed.
