We stayed during the week at the end of October. We choose this hotel based on the Tripadvisor ratings and the good location. Are stay was excellent. Finally we found a hotel where you are actually looking forward to go back to after your dinner!

- Location is perfect. The little streets around the Cathedral are full of people during the day but nice and quit in the evenings. Trams to everywhere leave from Groenplaats.

- Room was very nice. We decided to go for the deluxe room as it was slightly bigger. The rooms are large for European standards. The rooms were clean and well furbished. Room nr. 5 was nice with the Cathedral view and the funky lights. Softdrinks in the minibar were free and were stocked up every morning of our stay.

- Service was as it should be. There was always someone behind reception even though the hotel has only 10 rooms. The staff was well trained and educated. They took a lot of time to explain us the where to go and what to do during our stay. The GM himself was available during our stay and helped us on our way for the transport. One of the reception guys (a student from the Hotelschool) took extra time to show us around and explain a lot of things about the hotel.

- Breakfast was served in a nice area. Everything was fresh and well stocked. Even though there are many place around to go for breakfast I would still like to advice to go at least once for breakfast since the room is nice. There was a nice outside space on a courtyard that could be used as well in the summer.

Antwerp is a beautiful city - a very walkable. But staying in the heart of the old town is very special and this hotel ticks all the boxes. Exceptionally friendly and accommodating staff and a lovely room (be warned, though, there were two long and steep flights of stairs). But, boy, was it worth it. We had a large loft-style room with big bed, seating area and huge bathroom and, most special of all, a view of the roof-tops of Antwerp, including the cathedral. I loved it. We were right in the middle of town so breakfast (we chose to eat out) and dinner were on the doorstep. And there's all that delicious Belgian chocolate to hand. What's not to like?

Small modern hotel in historic house in the old town. The location cannot be beat: steps away from cathedral and walking distance from interesting shopping streets and museums. Modern and comfortable rooms. Very friendly staff. Room 5 has a view of the cathedral from the bed! Beware: narrow stairs and no lift. EUR12 breakfast is OK, but nothing special.

This is a great little hotel, excellently managed by very attentive and friendly staff. The rooms were well presented and modern, and the breakfast was quite satisfying. The hotel is conveniently situated in the old part of town, and is easy walking distance to most of the main sights. It is in a street that is closed to traffic, so is very quiet. We were on the second floor; there is no lift that I saw. Overall we were very pleased with Hotel Matelote and would not hesitate to stay there again.

Room Tip: The two rooms that we saw were well fitted out. As the hotel is in a pedestrian-only precinct, I th...

The people here are very friendly and the hotel itself is well located. Relatively clean but as several other people have said it is a little tired in places. 25€ a night for an extra mattress is a bit steep. The exposed rafters look great until the people in the room above decide to do a bit of night time aerobics in their shoes and you discover that you would rather have the plasterboard ceiling back to act as a noise barrier. This is competing with the likes of holiday inn express and to be honest is not up to the same standard but is better located which is in the end what you are paying for.

We chose the hotel for its location and booked a deluxe cosy comfort room. When we arrived we were pleasantly surprised to be offered a glass of sparkling (Spanish) wine in a flute and we sat on the lounge with some other guests and talked before going to our room. It was very relaxing.
Our room was located on the first floor which was good because you had to carry your own suitcase up the stairs (despite the lovely female receptionist offering to do it for us). Our newly made friends carried their cases up to the third floor. The room was modern, had a very comfortable bed. We assumed "cosy" might indicate a small room but it wasn't! Perhaps this was because we had a deluxe room though.
The hotel is located on a very quiet cobbled laneway with no taxi access. However there were a couple of motor vehicles that did drive down the laneway in the early hours of the morning and wake me up and I didn't realise there were some garages along the laneway but obviously the owners had access at limited hours. However, I was kept awake one night by a couple talking quite loudly - I think they were in the adjoining room.
The area has some beautiful old buildings and is full of cafes, restaurants and bars and is very lively. Definitely the right location for visitors.
We didn't have breakfast at the hotel but found a gourmet coffee shop that was located right at the end of the laneway. It was nice to sit with locals and watch people pass on their way to work. If you need advice on the trains/tram go to the nearby Groetplatz metro station and ask the lovely people there (this is also the direction to the main shopping strip).

Room Tip: ask for a lower level room even if you need to upgrade

This is a small, boutique hotel on a side street just 1 minute's walk from the main square. The location is fantastic! Being in the old town however also means no vehicles, and a 5-minute walk from the nearest metro station on cobbled streets. So be prepared, especially when you have luggage.

The hotel and rooms are modern, clean and welcoming. Wifi is excellent. You have to climb some stairs to your room but I understand this is quite common in Belgium. The reception staff was very polite and helpful and even printed a map of the metro system for us, to make sure that we got to Antwerp Central on time for our Thalys train. They really made our stay more memorable.

Highly recommended.
