“Makes Ibis look posh”
Reviewed 15 March 2008

If you want a basic, and I mean basic, hotel right behind the Centraal Station in Antwerpen this is for you. For your €50 you get a room, double bed with bunk over, a wash area, shower and separate lavatory, and a tv. It is fine. The breakfast at €6 is over priced for what you get (not much). The area is peopled by ultra Orthodox Jewish men as it is the diamond area. It looks a bit rough but I had no problems. If you want to splash out on the money you have saved by staying here you can dine in style next door in the Golden Tulip hotel restaurant - complete with pianist who sings. Near by there is le Pain Quotiden which is open 7am to 7pm so makes a better choice of breakfast eatery. There are lots of little supermarkets in the station. By the way, the restored station is worth a detour.

The Etap chain is owned by Accor Hotels - an established and reputable company which owns a number of budget and more upmarket chains including Formule 1 (budget) and Novotel.

Etap is an attempt to provide the budget traveller with a decent but basic level of service beyond the Formule 1 shared toilet/shower.

The Etap in Antwerp is new: it only opened in January. The rooms are 50 Euros per night and each room can accommodate 3 people through a double bed and a single bunk above i.e. you pay 50 Euros irrespective of whether 1, 2 or 3 people stay.

The hotel has a special rate at a local underground car park which is a bit tricky to find: your best bet is to park outside the hotel and ask for directions (they have ready made information leaflet for you directing you to the car park).

The thing that struck me about the hotel is how spotless clean the rooms are - not a hair in sight and no dust. Very nice.

The room is however very basic - a double bed with a single bunk above (accessed via a steep metal ladder - careful if you've had a drink or 6). Sheets and pillows were clean and fresh smelling.

There was no kettle in the room but there was a plug point next to the sink. No universal shaver point so you wil need an adaptor.

The toilet was clean and there was plenty of good quality toilet paper too.

Towels were provided - they were clean and smelled fresh. The plastic shower cubicle was spotless. Be careful though - there's a hole in the glass door which functions as a handle but the water from the shower can spray through. The shower had decent power from, presumably, some sort of pressurised water system.

The television had BBC1 with Ceefax! Quite how Etap have managed this is beyond me but, yes, it did have live BBC1 with Ceefax - in Belgium. I've never come across this before and Etap is to be praised for providing something for all guests (German, French and Dutch language programmes).

There's no phone in the room.

Breakfast is Euros per person which sounds cheap and undeniably is. Breakfast is very basic however. Still, there is Orange juice (which tastes fresh), decent coffee, a selection of tea and a good selection of basic bread rolls with jam, honey and other things. Can't complain.

The hotel is not in the nicest part of Antwerp and there have been reports of cars being broken in to whilst parked on street: use the car park which apparently is patrolled.

The site around the hotel is currently (May 2007) a building site and consequently there is noise starting early in the morning. At least I was told there was - to be honest, with ear plugs, I didn't notice much at all and I did stay on a weekday. There was also some work going on in the hotel - some drilling in the room above which was more noisy, but not unbearably so, than the work outside.

I suspect that in time this new hotel will attract the budget and young traveller more interested in partying than sleeping. The walls are thin and noise insulation is not good but during our stay we had no problems - it was, in fact, the quietest hotel I've stayed in for a long time.

The doors are locked after a certain hour - don't know what but we returned at about 11:30 PM and had to press the buzzer.

The service from the reception staff is very good. I offered the guy a tip for all the friendly advice he gave me but he said that he wasn't allowed to accept it.

There's a drink machine in the lobby serving hot drinks - the price is about 1 Euro per drink.

My car was side swiped in Antwerp by a man, speaking Arabic, who then conjured up witnesses to say that I had hit him. It was a pretty poor start to my stay and to be honest I was glad to get out of Antwerp. There are much nicer places to see in Belgium but if I had to stay in Antwerp again I would seriously consider Etap. The only concern I would have is the sort of people that Etap may attract by virtue of its low price - will I get to sleep.

Still, my hat goes off to Accor Hotels - they've produced incredible value for money and a lovely clean room as well. All in all I can't fault it.

The area feels a bit dodgy though as, to be honest, does most of Antwerp. Judging by my experience of being side swipped and then presented with fake witnesses I would be silly to go back to Antwerp in a hurry.

You're looking at about a 20 to 25 minute walk to the centre of Antwerp.
