While visiting Mechelen, we stayed over at the Anker hotel. Both the hotel and restaurant are inspired by the underlying Anker brewery, so everything is beer based. Authentic scenery, nice rooms, nice breakfast, good location towards the center of Mechelen.

Room Tip: I prefer the groundrooms located around the patio.

Most men's idea of heaven, and the beer is one of Belgian's best (Golden Carolus). Our room was clean and spacious with a fine view of stacked beer canisters and mysterious old brewing machines from the outside passage way. We paid a bit extra for overnight parking in the brewery car park. Breakfast is in the restaurant, where we also had dinner. Mechelen town centre is only 10 minutes' walk away. A stylish place to stay in a very pretty town.

This hotel is a one off set in the heart of the only working brewery in town. You have to pass the barrels from reception to the rooms. I thought it gave it real atmosphere. The room was spacious and modern, not all that well sound proved from those above but clean and comfortable. The reception area is in the gift shop for the brewery; the staff were friendly and helpful. Wifi is available in the rooms. The centre of the old town and cathedral with a host of bars and restaurants are 5-10 minutes away but for the first night, I was happy to stay in the restaurant/bar with a good choice of beers brewed on the spot and a wide range of dishes on the menu. What better place to have a Boeff Carbonade - mine was excellent. The breakfast served in the restaurant was fine - a good choice of cheeses and meats with the usual cereals , coffee and juice

Room Tip: Go for an upper room in the outside complex

The Hotel is part of a brewery and has an excellent gift shop and if you're a beer fan you will love it.

The hotel rooms however are basic and in urgent need of modernisation as does the bathroom with the shower being a simple affair with an antiquated shower curtain over base arrangement.

An awkward nights sleep in a single bed in a room that feels like its locked in the 70's was not something I would not wish to repeat.

This was our second stay here and it was more enjoyable than the first time. This time we had a lovely meal in the restaurant. The meals are very individual, well presented and good value for money. The beer on draught comes directly from the brewery on site. You can also do brewery tours there with a taste of 2 beers afterwards. The rooms are spacious and adjacent to two lovely lounge areas. There is even a drinks dispenser with bottles of beer. There is free Wi-Fi although it was out of order this time. The hotel is within 10 minutes walk of the city centre with its lovely market square, cathedral, historic buildings and churches, lovely bars and loads of shops. It is a typical Flemish city, much underrated. So apart from the rooms, patio area, bar, restaurant and brewery shop there is nothing more to add, apart from: we will be back again!

Room Tip: All the rooms are spacious and well presented with large bathroom with shower, toilet, washbasin, hairdryer. There is kettle with tea and coffee, glasses,TV, small chair, desk and plenty of wardrobe space (could do with some more hangers)
