For a small town, Mechelen boasts a surprisingly large choice of good ice cream. Gauthier Chocolaterie in the Befferstraat used to be our favourite, until Appassionato opened in July 2013 in a quiet street just off the Grand Place. The Italian-trained owners of Appassionato select their ingredients really carefully, and their ice creams are imaginative and very very tasty. Gauthier's specialty - chocolate ice cream - now has a competitor which is just as intensely chocolate: I could not tell you which one I like best. For all other flavours, it's an easy choice: there is no ice cream parlour within a thirty-km radius which can rival Appassionato. Our favourites are the rich creamy pistacchio and hazelnut ice creams, and especially the fruit sorbets - a delicious cherry sorbet which featured too briefly at cherry high season, an equally delightful strawberry sorbet at strawberry high season, etc. These are not mass-produced ice creams and sorbets, these are made only when the ingredients are at their best. Recently, Appassionato introduced an ice cream made with the local Maneblusser beer: very intriguing.
If you want to sit down rather than walk out with a cone, the pancakes make a nice accompaniment, too. A wonderful addition to the town.
