“very convenient - very practical!”
Reviewed 20 October 2012

No major complaints. Bedroom much larger than expected - and bathroom facilities + cleanliness, all absolutely first class. All staff exceptionally helpful, particularly the various ladies at reception - and hotel situation is excellent for the town centre, as well as for many pubs and restaurants.

Breakfast a little disappointing as there is no hot food other than eggs! And if businessmen get there before you - prepare to be disappointed!. They are like locusts!Carpeting throughout the hotel is a little stark - dull greyish everywhere - but I presume that this is a practical choice from the hotel's point of view. Bedroom lighting quite poor - difficult to read at night - but overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Splendid 'Q' car park 2 minutes from the hotel - expensive - but safe, supervised 24/7 - and secure. Puts UK car parks to shame. But do ask the hotel staff how to find it before arrival - as it is easy to make the mistake of driving along the pedestrianised quayside. Strictly forbidden!

dear Sir

thank you very much for your feed back; i'm happy that you enjoyed your stay overall.
i understand what you write about the lighting in the rooms, we indeed chose "romantic lighting" over "practical lighting". we are now building 6 extra rooms, with 2 light circuits, a romantic one and a practical one. we indeed chose carpet in the hotel because of isolation of sound.
next time when you come and stay in our hotel, let me know, and i'll bake you a wonderful egg myself so you don't have to "cue".

best wishes and hope to see you next time.

This is a very belated review, for we visited in June 2010.
My husband visits Mechelen often on business, however this was the first time i decided to tag along. And boy, i absolutely loved Ve!
The Hotel is charming, with its very comfortable rooms with the walk-in shower, etc. However, the best part is the Amazing staff they have. They are amazing guides and when I was terribly sick with a fever and Peter was so very helpful - right from getting hot soup and delicious food up to the room, to booking tickets to Paris, he helped with it all!
I would definitely love to go back again and this is a must go-to!

I was in town on business and we choose this hotel on a recommendation.

Mechelen itself is a short - but expensive - ride from Zavanteem . My fare was 60euro incl tip.

The Mercure is in a sort of small square opposite the Canal and be aware that after a certain time in the morning the taxi needs to drop you off at the road leading up to it. Its a short walk .Please also watch out for the bikes ,which are everywhere ,and likewise when you cross the road.

Welcome was excellent , the young lady who checked me in was both pleasant and helpful .Likewise the lady on the front desk in the morning when I left was equally charming.

The room was clean ,moderately-sized ,and well-appointed with modern decor. There is free wi-fi in the lobby but free wired in the rooms. They have a great walk-in shower that would put many a more expensive hotel to shame [ who too often make you stand in a bath - an old-fashioned practice].

Finally there are lots of places to eat and drink nearby - be aware there might be some noise from revellers if your room faces the canal/square.

Otherwise really decent stay and I'll come back given the opportunity.

dear sir

thank you so much for your feed back. it feels good to read that our staff does everything so well. we are really proud of our team. i felt bad reading that you paid so much for your taxi, normally a trip from zaventem to Mechelen shouldn't cost more then 45 euros. you can also take a direct train now which only takes 7 minutes.

well, hope to welcome you again.

best wishes

We had a very good experience with this hotel; the de luxe room was very comfy with bathroom bath, walk in shower etc. and separate toilet.
The room was spacious; the beds were nice and soft.
We felt very welcome with the staff, every question or request was nicely met by them.
Great breakfast, with eggs fried or boiled to order.

Room Tip: higher floors have the deluxe rooms which are a bit bigger than the standard rooms. The hotel has no...

The hotel is quite attractive, an old fish smoking establishment renewed with some design and hi tech features. Junior suite is really warm and large but wi-fi isn't free (and expensive: 15 euros per 24 hours) and I've got much better breakfast elsewehere. Good position, just 4 minute from the Cathedral and Grote Markt and in the old fish market, a quite vivacious square on the bank of the small channel that crosses Mechelen.

This hotel is not a genuine four star.
I would rather say that it's a three star (plus?).
Value for money at 160 eur/night for a room without airco is not what you would expect form a 4 star Mercure.
The rooms are nice, but a bit too dark for my taste. I prefer light and white...but that is a question of personal taste. Breakfast is OK, but nothing more...
The biggest downside is the location. Dificult to reach and the square (vismarkt) is a very lively place. If you are looking for a night on the town this place with its bars and restaurants will keep you happy until late at night. If, like me, you are looking for a good night sleep, stay away. it is loud until (very) late on a thursday...
Next time for a business trip in Mechelen I will book Martin's Patershof again for better value for money. Of the Novotel for that matter...

Room Tip: Never take a room at the side of the "vismarkt". You will not sleep...

Dear Sir / Madam

Thank you very much for your feed back on your stay. I regret that your stay didn't go as planned. It is true, our hotel is located on the Vismarkt, the most lively square of Mechelen, luckily, we dispose of enough rooms in the back of the hotel so our guests shouldn't be bothered by the sounds of the restaurant-atmosphere. I'm sorry if you maybe had a room with view on the market. I understand aswell that airco has to work, we dealt with a technical problem last week which is now solved. We also foresaw very good beds with a special trevira topper for a good night sleep. Again I apologise for the noizes in the street and I do hope to welcome you again in the future so we can pamper you as we do with all our guests.

best wishes
