Spent three nights here as a base for exploring Antwerp, Mechelen, Leuven, Liege and Brussels. Central location, next to bars, restaurants and a very handy supermarket across the bridge - 1 min from hotel. 15 mins walk to and from train station. Longer if carrying bags. Bus 1 from the station will take you to the city centre if you prefer.

The hotel is a refurbished fish smokery and the furnishings are very modern, but has character. Room has multichannel TV, lovely bathroom, good continental buffet breakfast and a small bar by reception if you don't want to go out. Look for good weekend deals at accorhotels.com for this hotel.

Mechelen is a nice city and is also about 25 mins on the train to Brussels, Antwerp or Leuven. About 1 hour 20mins to either Bruges or Liege. You can get really cheap tickets online for the trains in Belgium http://www.belgianrail.be/ - just select weekend Internet ticket from the drop-down list.

There is a very useful free on-line guide that can be printed out at this address:
http://www.use-it.travel/cities/detail/mechelen/

They also do other cities, such as Antwerp, Brussels, Leuven, Bruges, Gent etc. Finally, if you get a chance, pay a visit to Antwerp. I was really impressed with the city and if you get a chance, wander down to the south district, called 't Zuid - very nice buildings and up and coming area. Old historical centre and river walk are lovely, especially on a sunny day. Good shopping streets too.

Room Tip: If you like a quiet room, ask for one at the back of the hotel away from the bars outside. Hotel doe...

This small hotel has a lot of character : its innercity location on a river, the history of the building, and ... the very friendly character of the staff.

From the southern part of the Mechelen ringroad the 'Lamot' parking is signposted. This parking doubles up as a parking for the Ve-hotel, the Novotel, the Lamot conference and meeting location, and a Match supermarket. From the parking exit, the hotel is just across the river (a 2 minute walk).

Other reviews underline that the rooms are quite dark. I agree, but for me it was part of the charm of this hotel. For a family with kids or a business traveller wishing to work in the room this could be annoying.

Breakfast was nice, and service professional and rapid. This was also the case at check in and out. I requested a late check out, which was agreed to with a smile.

The only problem for me was the fact that street noise tends to enter the rooms, since most of the rooms are overlooking a lively square, or a busy pedestrian street linking this lively area with the main market square. It was not too bad when I stayed there on a winter night, but I can imagine how this will be in summertime.

Overall an excellent hotel.

Room Tip: Room 104 is quite big. Some rooms overlook the noisy square, others a possibly less noisy street. I...

The good: The staff are all very pleasant. The breakfast is good and service excellent. The rooms and bathrooms are modern, spacious and well equipped. The location is great, with secure parking very close by.

The bad: The 2 downsides are the lighting in the rooms (so low it's like candlelight!) and a strong reluctance to provide room service in the evening. Although there is a mention of a (non-existent) menu in the room guide, I was discouraged from ordering, even when I pushed for it, and advised it would be better to go to one of the restaurants along the street which is apparently where the food would come from anyway. This is not what I needed on arrival at 21:30 after a long day.

Overall: It's a good hotel and if you wish to eat out every night anyway, you will be happy here. I have stayed here again and will do so again but only when the Novotel and NH are full or extortionately priced.

Room Tip: Ask for a brightly lit room (I saw a manager's reponse saying that they are introducing a handfu...

I'm really sorry to hear that you weren't able to enjoy our roomservice. we indeed have no menus in the rooms since menus of the restaurants change a lot. but we are offcourse willing to serve roomservice after a long day of work. ill discuss this situation with our colleagues. thank you very much for your feed back.

No major complaints. Bedroom much larger than expected - and bathroom facilities + cleanliness, all absolutely first class. All staff exceptionally helpful, particularly the various ladies at reception - and hotel situation is excellent for the town centre, as well as for many pubs and restaurants.

Breakfast a little disappointing as there is no hot food other than eggs! And if businessmen get there before you - prepare to be disappointed!. They are like locusts!Carpeting throughout the hotel is a little stark - dull greyish everywhere - but I presume that this is a practical choice from the hotel's point of view. Bedroom lighting quite poor - difficult to read at night - but overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Splendid 'Q' car park 2 minutes from the hotel - expensive - but safe, supervised 24/7 - and secure. Puts UK car parks to shame. But do ask the hotel staff how to find it before arrival - as it is easy to make the mistake of driving along the pedestrianised quayside. Strictly forbidden!

dear Sir

thank you very much for your feed back; i'm happy that you enjoyed your stay overall.
i understand what you write about the lighting in the rooms, we indeed chose "romantic lighting" over "practical lighting". we are now building 6 extra rooms, with 2 light circuits, a romantic one and a practical one. we indeed chose carpet in the hotel because of isolation of sound.
next time when you come and stay in our hotel, let me know, and i'll bake you a wonderful egg myself so you don't have to "cue".

best wishes and hope to see you next time.

This is a very belated review, for we visited in June 2010.
My husband visits Mechelen often on business, however this was the first time i decided to tag along. And boy, i absolutely loved Ve!
The Hotel is charming, with its very comfortable rooms with the walk-in shower, etc. However, the best part is the Amazing staff they have. They are amazing guides and when I was terribly sick with a fever and Peter was so very helpful - right from getting hot soup and delicious food up to the room, to booking tickets to Paris, he helped with it all!
I would definitely love to go back again and this is a must go-to!

I was in town on business and we choose this hotel on a recommendation.

Mechelen itself is a short - but expensive - ride from Zavanteem . My fare was 60euro incl tip.

The Mercure is in a sort of small square opposite the Canal and be aware that after a certain time in the morning the taxi needs to drop you off at the road leading up to it. Its a short walk .Please also watch out for the bikes ,which are everywhere ,and likewise when you cross the road.

Welcome was excellent , the young lady who checked me in was both pleasant and helpful .Likewise the lady on the front desk in the morning when I left was equally charming.

The room was clean ,moderately-sized ,and well-appointed with modern decor. There is free wi-fi in the lobby but free wired in the rooms. They have a great walk-in shower that would put many a more expensive hotel to shame [ who too often make you stand in a bath - an old-fashioned practice].

Finally there are lots of places to eat and drink nearby - be aware there might be some noise from revellers if your room faces the canal/square.

Otherwise really decent stay and I'll come back given the opportunity.

dear sir

thank you so much for your feed back. it feels good to read that our staff does everything so well. we are really proud of our team. i felt bad reading that you paid so much for your taxi, normally a trip from zaventem to Mechelen shouldn't cost more then 45 euros. you can also take a direct train now which only takes 7 minutes.

well, hope to welcome you again.

best wishes

We had a very good experience with this hotel; the de luxe room was very comfy with bathroom bath, walk in shower etc. and separate toilet.
The room was spacious; the beds were nice and soft.
We felt very welcome with the staff, every question or request was nicely met by them.
Great breakfast, with eggs fried or boiled to order.

Room Tip: higher floors have the deluxe rooms which are a bit bigger than the standard rooms. The hotel has no...
