Owner description: This museum (or “Speelgoedmuseum” in Flemish) in nearby Mechelen is a don’t-miss treat for kids. With ongoing activities and rotating collections and exhibitions, it’s a great place for the youngsters to blow off steam while checking out toys and games in a foreign land.

Very funny to suddenly remember lots of stuf from childhood, just by seeing your childhood toys. Only not topped off with the more recent toys, which we found a pitty.

The museum is located somewhat outside the center, there is plenty of (free) parking nearby. The building is rather outdated and many of the exhibits could use a refurbishment. It has the history of toys mostly in displays. Some of the displays had a gauze window, which made it difficult to see the actual toys, especially from kids level. In general the displays are quite high, which means that younger kids (2-3 years) need a lot of lifting up to see the contents. The museum could foresee wooden steps in front of the displays to remedy this. Not all displays are equally interesting, a better selection could be made by the museum staff. For small kids, the most relevant areas are the corners in which they could play with lego, building blocks or do small games. If the museum were to better integrate these activities it would be much more attractive (i.e. it was already possible to set the trains working by pressing buttons and to highlight several of the stuffed animals, our kids loved these displays). We´ve easily spent 2.5 hours here, and had to drag our kids out of the lego corner.

While visiting the town of Mechelen, we took some time to visit the toy museum, located at the outscirts of Mechelen. Absoloutely worthwhile, toys from many generations back, for us it was a trip down memory lane.

They claim to be Europe's biggest toy museum, which may well be true - there are 3 stories of displays, the coloured signs directing you around the museum are (like all signposting in Belgium) more confusing than helpful, but you'll soon find what you're interested in, from dolls to construction sets. The descriptions in the display cases are almost exclusively in Flemish, even the printed guides in French are rather useless - the numbers they give for each display case are not shown on the cases themselves. Children will love it regardless, adults like me can wallow in the toys of our youth. They would have got 4 stars from me if they'd had English and/or French descriptions.
