“Unique Small Hotel in Centre of Town”
Reviewed 4 December 2012

I have stayed in Hasselt before in the Ibis & Express by Holiday Inn - both of these are conveniently located on the inner ring.
This time, I thought I would try out 't hemelhuys right in the centre of the town.
The hotel is really a small and old house, located in a very quiet street just off the main street and square and is located very close to lots of restaurants and bars, but as the street is a "no through road", it is very quiet.
The owner offers a personal check in service and although I had booked a small single room, was given a larger double room on the 1st floor, which was very comfortable and had a nice bathroom and separate toilet.
The hotel has an individual character with small wooden staircase to the upper levels and I would imagine thta each room has it's own theme.
Breakfast was in the downstairs rear room, with a view out to the garden and was of good quality.
There is no parking at the hotel, but they have a small number of spaces available (at a small charge) in a secure car park two streets away (5 minutes walk).

Room Tip: I would expect all the rooms to be good quality and quiet. However, bear in mind that all rooms are...

very nice, old house which is state-of-the-art renovated with a friendly staff, and a charming owner. Right in the centre of the town, but in a quiet alley.

Breakfast is delicious with home baked bread and yoghourt, lots of fresh fruit and so on...

Just into the New Year we decided to treat ourselves to some pampering and booked a night at 't Hemelhuys. We had diner reservations at a restaurant nearby and didn't want to drive home afterwards. We had read the reviews about 't Hemelhuys, the prices were okay (120 euro for a B&B for double room), so we booked the night.
We were met by a very friendly and chic lady, who showed us our room at the top of the small but pitturesque house right in the middle of the city. The road is closed for traffic on most times of the day but we were allowed in just for check-in. We then were given the code and directions to the private parking lot, just 500m away (10 euro/day).
We stayed at the Aquamarijn room and this is a romantic, bright room with white and pale blue colours, wooden floor, white bed and furniture... very lovely and peaceful.
The bathroom was a few steps up and equally tranquil furbished. They offer the L'Occitane beauty products, I had read on their website, so I was looking forward to that. Unfortunately, they were more like samples instead of actual products ... that was a little disappointing.
The stairs in the house are rather steep and narrow. Not really a problem unless, like us, you come home in the middle of the night and having a few too many drinks... :-)
We did sleep very well in the supercomfy beds! The linen is wonderfull too.
In the morning we went to the quiet breakfast room to be met by a friend of the owners, also a very nice and chic lady. We got fresh orange juice to start with and were offered an egg of our choice.
Breakfast was rather simple, although we had read in other reviews of it to be very abundant. Just some croissants and two choices of bread, no buns or rolls or "pistolets" as we call them in Belgium. I do believe that in Hasselt, you'd have to be able to find some fresh bread. Instead this was pre-baked bread, which they baked off themselves (I overheard the lady say this to some other guests). With breakfast only starting at 9am (which we found rather late...) there is enough time to buy fresh bread and pistolets at a bakery nearby...
Choice of meat, cheese, jam, fruit etc... was also rather limited. Nevertheless, 4 of the 5 rooms were booked, so it's not like they had to provide breakfast only for us. And we had already eaten most of our breakfast when our eggs arrived... The coffee, on the other hand, was really good and was offered more than once.
The atmosphere in the breakfastroom was tranquil, on the verge of uncomfortable. Maybe some music would have made it more relaxing..?
All in all we would definately recommend this B&B. It is a very well run place, with lovely quiet rooms, in a quiet corner of Hasselt. Location is excellent, very close to restaurants and shops and with a beercafé right next door also called Hemelhuys and with a chouce of 500 Belgian beers!.

Room Tip: If you don't like to use the steep and narrow stairs, ask for one of the three rooms on the firs...

Please, please if you are looking for bed and breakfast accommodation book yourself into 't Hemelhuys (translated - Heavenly House) a perfect name.
Liesbeth and Ann will give you a very warm welcome and are very hospitable.
Their guest house is centrally located in the heart of Hasselt - their directions to find it are extremely easy and you can pay for parking very nearby if you wish to or opt for free parking a few streets away.
The breakfast is varied and taken in a lovely breakfast room with piped music where the decor is beautiful, clean and contemporary.
The bedrooms are all of the same standard with ensuite facilities and tv. The bedlinen is crisp and white and the decor is of lovely pastel colours. There are no tea and coffee making faciltiies but this seems to be the norm abroad.
Liesbeth and Ann will recommend places of interest for you to visit and will draw you endless maps if need be.
We stayed there for our 30th wedding anniversary and feel that we could not have had better service if we had have been staying in a 4* hotel.
Ann and Liesbeth were very approachable but not intrusive and very much deserve their guest house to be recommended 100%.
Thank you 't Hemulhuys for a perfect 30th Wedding Annivesary celebration.

Everything about t' Hemelhuys was perfect: the room was beautiful and the breakfast room is bright and sunny, but the nicest part of the stay was the warm welcome from the hosts --- 2 charming young women who did everything possible to make our stay pleasant. Highest recommendation for this excellent establishment.

We had a delightful stay at the small Hotel/B&B “‘t Hemelhuys “. It's perfectly located in a charming little street within easy walking distance to great restaurants and shops . The whole place is so beautiful, warm and welcoming . The lady who runs the place was very helpful.
You can tell that the hosts have an eye for antiques and interior design. The beds are extremely comfortable and the breakfast was delicious .I would definitely return!!
