“Excellent day out with lots to learn and experience.”

We had a wonderful day at the NCM. The trip underground (for 5 yrs plus) was fantastic...and amazing value at £2.50 per person. Our guide "Kebab" (there's a story behind the name) kept adults and children interested and amused throughout our 90 mins tour.

“Step back in time.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 November 2013

In today's day and age it's most unusual to get something for nothing, however the National Coal Mining Museum offers just that. Free admission and free parking, now that's a bargain.

Have a walk round the "pit top" and discover the various equipment used to mine coal over the ages. A trip to the winding house shows how miners went underground to work their "shift". Book an underground trip to discover the workings of a mine (this is a must) and listen to the guide as he explains coal mining throughout the ages.

The Visitors Centre is a "mine" of information (sorry for the pun) showing the conditions miners had to endure and the dangers attached. There is an interesting gift shop and a large clean and tidy cafe for refreshments.

All in all, well worth a visit especially when it's FREE.

From an ex-miner at Caphouse Colliery (before it became the NCMM)

“A good day out”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 November 2013

The facility is very good and if you don't take the tour of the mine a free day out for the family. We toured the mine which was a very interesting experience and opens your eyes to the conditions down there. We were lucky to visit on a very warm day and we had a picnic lunch in the grounds and then a very pleasant walk around the grounds. It is true that we seldom visit local attractions and this was recommended to us by an ex miner working at the Beamish Museum who was taken here on a birthday visit.

“Great way to learn history and have a memorable day out.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 November 2013

First a warning. The roads leading tot he museum have a dangerous amount of speed cameras on them. Once every 300m.

Second, another warning. To get the most out of the visit, arrive early. 10:00 is best. This way you can book on a trip underground which is the best part of the whole experience. It's really worth the earlier start.

On the surface is a small, modern museum giving the history of mining and mining communities. They also have actors and shows throughout the day to give you a different perspective on everything you see. Outside are buildings containing the usual sights you would see in any heavy industry. Also you've got the horses and a large nature walk area.

The highlight of the visit is the tour underground. Lasts about an hour and a half. The ex-Miners who lead this have fun and help you have fun. You also get to learn a lot about working in a mine.

Easy spend a long hour day there. Recommended to all. And its free.
