“The best place in Belgium”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 December 2012

My husband and I went to Belgium for my 30th bday aka "Beercation." We picked L'Auberge de Bouvingnes based on the overwhelming reviews on here. And, words cannot describe how amazing this bed and breakfast was. Vincent and his wife made us feel at home with their beautiful rooms and amazing food. Took the most romantic bike ride to the nearest Abbey and had the most amazing meal of my life afterwards at the B&B. My husband and I ended up staying an extra night because we fell in love with this place. Out of all cities and places we have been, this is by far the best on our list. We highly recommend L’Auberge de Bouvingnes and hope to visit soon!

Room Tip: All rooms are quiet and huge.

We stayed at the Auberge de Bouvignes for one night whilst touring in the Ardennes. It is situated just out of town, north of Dinant by the side of the road, with the river and railway on the otherside. the building feels like it is cut from the rock which rises steeply behind. This may not sound like the good start but once you open the door and meet the owners, Vincent and Elena, you are in for a rare treat. Nothing is too much trouble. The bedroom was very spacious, as was the bathroom. We weren't disturbed by the traffic, our room, one of five open so far, faced the back. There was a Skype phone in the room and internet access in a computer lounge upstairs.
Vincent asked us to come down for a free welcome drink, which we had in the sitting area, he is a mind of local information, planning routes for us and suggesting places to visit. As we were staying on a Friday the restaurant was open, as it is on a Saturday too, his sister is in charge of the kitchen. The food was excellent, a wonderful 3 course meal and excellent wine, hard to beat in most establishments. We were given free mineral water to take up with us.
Breakfast was also excellent, lots of the produce Vincent and Elena bring over from Sardinia, where she is from. It is not very often you come across such a couple who go out of their way to make sure everything is just right for you. On top of all this the price was outstanding value for money. I am sorry we weren't staying for longer. I would hope we can return and urge fellow travellers to stay in the wonderful old building while this amazing couple are running it.

Room Tip: The rooms at the back would be quieter as away from the road

The rest of the comments are totally justified. We had a really pleasant stay, even if it was just for a night, unluckily! We'll be back! We still have to try the kayaking and doing a bike ride. The area around is very charming and welcoming .

The most fantastic start to our honeymoon! We were on a trip around Europe and Dinant was our first destination. Auberge de Bouvignes is such a lovely place to stay, the rooms are immaculate, the bathroom is very clean and spacious and you couldn't get better hosts. Vincent and Elena are fantastic they made sure our stay was comfortable and everywhere was accessible - even driving us to the top of Anhee to ride down on bikes - and driving us to and from our evening meal. Nothing was too big - Vincent even planned our route leading down to Luxembourg. A few things to note - you can make a free quick call to your home, you can access free wifi and you receive a free welcome drink on arrival - it's the little things that make difference!

My husband and I travelled to Dinant, Belgium after a business trip, where I recently discovered my ancestors come from. I was excited to discover my heritage but was extremely nervous about travelling to this area and our very limited use of the French language. I used Tripadvisor to help choose our accommodation at L'Auberge de Bouvignes, where the owner Vincent speaks perfect english, the language barrier was not a problem.

We can't say enough about how wonderful our experience was. Elena, Vincents wife, a lovely gentle woman from Sardina, picked us up at the train station in Dinant and drove us a short distance to the L'Auberge, luckily her limited English is better than our French and we sorted things out easliy, thank goodness for sign language.

On our first night Elena also drove us back into town so we could have dinner and Vincent brought us back to the Inn, where we had a drink and then a great nights sleep in our very large room with a comfy king size bed with nice linens. Everything in the inn was spotless, there is a bit of a musty smell when you first enter the building, but it is after all a very old stone building, after awhile the smell disappears or maybe it just becomes part of the charm.

We were offered bikes, free of charge, and we happily rode them during our stay along the path of the Muese River into town where we visited the population center, the Citadel and other attractions. Then the next day we rode down an amazing mountain trail that followed some train tracks and back to the inn. It was simply a great experience.

To top off our visit we were fortunate enough to be there on a Friday night when L'Auberge serves dinner. It is without question one of the best meals we have ever had. The atmosphere, the banter and the kindness of Vincent and Elena will be forever etched in our memories. We chose the lamb dinner, lamb which is raised and cooked by Vincents sister, it was absolultey delicious, we still can't stop talking about it. We travel the world for business and we can say with certainty, you will not be disappointed if you stay here.

We loved the L'Auberge and thouroughly enjoyed speaking with the other quests during our stay, but it was Vincents humour, welcoming spirit and devotion to his Inn that stands out for us. From the very moment we stepped off the train and walked inside the stone building I felt like I had come home. For me, it was an overwhelming experience to stay at L'Auberge, to wander along the Muese River and look at the surrounding landscape and actually see what my ancestors use to see.

On a stop over in Paris on our way back home to Vancouver Canada we lost our camera, with all our photos, business and pleasure. We are devasted as we aren't able to look back at our wonderful stay at L'Auberge de Bouvignes...But sometimes fate steps in and shows itself in unusual ways. Maybe it's fates way of saying we have to go back to Dinant, to L'Auberge de Bouvignes, but if we are lucky enough to return, it will be for a longer period of time and we will download our photos everyday!

We were very impressed about the amazing Trip Advisor ranking of this hotel, with so many excellent reviews, and decided to stay there to find out why. The reviews are right, and what makes this place so special is the SUPERB service from Vincent and Elena. It's even difficult to call it service, because they are so welcoming that you feel like their friend.

They didn't just go the extra mile: Vincent actually took his motorcycle and drove 100 miles to retrieve our lost shopping bag (with something of sentimental value). He called the shop, found it and went to pick it up under rain, with a smile, just to help us. It was truly amazing.

The hotel itself is in a historic house (older than Belgium) with all the amenities of modern life. The rooms have been recently renovated. Our room was smaller than the others (as warned by Vincent at the time of reservation) but it was actually a great size, with a comfy double bed and a nice bathroom. It had free wifi and a telephone with Skype (how cool is that?)

The common areas are warm and cozy. We were just sipping the welcome drinks and talking to the hosts and the other guests (who were visibly enjoying the atmosphere too) while choosing our dinner. Food was very good, full of fresh Sardinian products and yummy recipes. The next morning, breakfast was also excellent. All of that for a very reasonable price.

I cannot recommend this place enough!

We booked the Auberge for four nights after Easter week, based on the really impressive reviews already posted on this site and needless to say, we were not disappointed. Right from our arrival we were taken by the warmth and welcome of our hosts, Vincent and Elena: there was nothing that was too much for them to do for us.

We had booked a room for ourselves and our four month old baby, and on arrival we were really impressed with the both the room and the very comfortable travel cot they had made up for our daughter with beautiful linens etc. The room was huge: Vincent explained how he normally keeps this room for families when possible. A huge bathroom with an impressive range of toiletries, including nappy sacks, cotton wool, changing mat, etc. for the baby. A real nice touch of class! Our bed was also very comfortable, and the free Skype and WiFi were a bonus.

Breakfast was a highlight of the day. While I am not a big fan of continental breakfast, I would definitely go back for this one: beautiful hams and salamis which Vincent and Elena import themselves from artisan butchers in Sardinia, boiled eggs, freshly squeezed (by Elena!) orange juice, crème brulee, fresh bread and pastries, coffee (any way you like it)….delicious!

After breakfast, Vincent was more than delighted to mark on our map a fantastic tour of the Ardennes, showing some real highlights of this beautiful corner of Europe: let him know what tickles your fancy and he will show you where best to get it tickled!

It is so nice to see someone take such pride in their own business, and Vincent was delighted to show us the additional works that he has been adding to the hotel: a business centre and fitness suite, along with an even bigger family room.

Unfortunately, we were not fortuitous to stay over the weekend, so we missed the restaurant, but again, Vincent was more than happy to recommend several highlights in town, and they even offered to drop us off and pick us up any evening so we could have a few beers. We never actually took them up on that offer, mind you, as it is a lovely walk along the river path that leads right to the Auberge. We also looked forward to our evenings back in the Auberge. With baby monitor in hand, it was lovely to sit in the bar and have long chats with Vincent over a bottle or two of Belgian ale: like I say, a good chat with what is now a good friend. My wife and I (and our baby!) cannot wait to return to our friends’ house!

Room Tip: Stay on the weekend in order to eat at the restaurant
