“Absolutely first rate”

We loved everthing about the Hancelot: the unique atmosphere of a large period house; the delightful, friendly owners; excellent breakfasts; unbeatable location in a quiet street, just 50m from the tram service into the historical centre. As there is no lift and the standard rooms are all on the third floor, older guests would be well advised to book one of the superior rooms on a lower floor. The owner was incredibly helpful in arranging chocolates, flowers and a bottle of fiizz pre-arrival. Highly recommended.

Everything about this elegant hotel oozes class, from the classical music piped discreetly into the opulent entrance hall to the comfortable wing chairs and stripped wood floors of the bedroom. The excellent breakfast is taken in a huge drawing room lit by candles and decorated with objets d'art. You are greeted with a complimentary drink and given careful advice on where to go and what to see in the city. The location, whilst not absolutely central, is within walking distance of all the major sights. Yet the price is very reasonable (ok, we did get a discount for staying three nights). You do have to rely on other guests keeping the noise down, as those beautiful wooden floors carry sound a very long way, and it might get a bit warm in high summer at the top of the building (no air con), but it's certainly an experience in gracious living that you don't get at most hotels.

we finally found the hotel hidden away down a very small road after a fairly adventurous taxi journey. It is conveniently situated for the frequent tram service or a short walk into town. We were given a very hospitable welcome including the option of a substantial glass of wine, gratefully accepted. The hotel was nicely decorated and the rooms spacious. The breakfast was just the job, and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. The slight downside could be the creaky floors, although slippers are helpfully provided to help keep down the noise. The shower was brilliant, which was a pleasant surprise in such an old building. If you don't like climbing stairs, make sure you get a first floor room!

I stayed here for 4 nights while attending a medical conference. This is a special place. Most hotels now are very uniform but this place has real character. Nice lobby with Mozart playing. Helpful and friendly staff. Thoroughly recommended!

We stayed in the "Wedding Suite" which was the master bedroom of the Baron and Baroness. This older historical building is very old world type of charming. Very large bathroom with adjoining sitting room. Shower was cramped though. Martin and his staff was very friendly and helpful. I did not find the place "noisy" as did some other reviewers. It is however a little hard to find. The only complaint is that the towels were rather flimsy but we just asked for more and were immediately accomodated.

Room Tip: Ask for the wedding suite

Thank you for your nice compliments on the wedding suite. I do have to make one small correction: the wedding suite was indeed part of the former private areas of the Baron & Baroness, however the wedding suite is not their original bedroom & bathroom. The original and monumentally protected bathroom of the Baron & Baroness has a bath for two, build in the ground and a beautifull shower with authentic mozaïque tiles. And this bathroom is located in the Charm Superior Room on the other side of the hallway. Just to avoid disappointments for future guests!

the 9th of april 2011 we got married in Hancelot in Ghent and it was a perfect, romantic day for us together with our family and friends. The owners are wonderful and because of their enthousiasm, service and hospitality we could make this weekeinde possible. The hotel is very pretty and has a lovely garden. And ofcourse... the room for just married couples is very lovely!!

Indeed, it were very romantic days ! It was ideal that you had rented all the 12 rooms for two nights. This way we could ensure the private and romantic atmosphere of your wedding and could we use all the areas in the hotel for different functions of the day: the lobby and garden for the wedding reception, the concert room for the walking buffet and dance-evening and the breakfast lounge for the wedding ceremony. It was beautifull to see the bride step down from the impressive staircase and it was a honour that the actual ceremony also took place in our Charm Hotel. These two days gave us as owners many beautifull memories. Thank you!
