Have you ever been shouted at and thrown out of a hotel in the middle of the night? No? Well, be prepared when you go to the Hancelot. A few pieces of advice:
Avoid the hotel if you have a pet (as the hotel has a no pet policy) or, for that matter, park your car with a pet outside the hotel.
Better avoid the hotel if you smoke (as the hotel has a no smoking policy) and
tread softly at night (as the hotel has uber-squeeky parquet flooring).
And better not pay when you check in as you may get thrown out.
Finally, better avoid the place altogether.
Yet all had started well. As we checked-in, we specifically asked the friendly receptionist if it was acceptable to the hotel for our dog to stay in the car, which we were offered to park in the adjacent garage of the hotel. Alternatively, we were going to move the car into the street. The receptionist confirmed that this was fine and took EUR166.50 as he checked us in.
We were sitting in the hotel's reception area, having a night cap, when a man came through the reception hall, walked out, only to return moments later. What happened next was outrageous, off scale, unheard of: as the man returned he launched into us in a commandeering tone of voice, shouting that it was against the policy of the hotel to have a dog in the hotel, telling us to leave immediately. We were stunned, yet responding in a very firm way, asking him to mind his own business as we were paying guests in this hotel and all had been cleared about the dog in the car.
The man claimed that he was the owner of the hotel and wanted us to leave as we didn't adhere to the no pet rules of the hotel. We tried to reason with him, offered to move the car into the street. He refused: he would not tolerate that either. 40 minutes of arguments unfolded, shouting, with that man mocking us with some talk of "Finding a compromise" (we had to come up with), launching into us, pointing finger: the man seemed under the influence and there was a palatable sense of insanity about the situation. We left. Having paid EUR166.50 for being out in the street in the middle of the night seemed suddenly just so much more agreeable than being in that place, which we suggest should only be considered once it has what it deserves: a new management as the current one is clearly unfit to run a hotel.
