“Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.”
Reviewed 25 January 2014

Have you ever been shouted at and thrown out of a hotel in the middle of the night? No? Well, be prepared when you go to the Hancelot. A few pieces of advice:
Avoid the hotel if you have a pet (as the hotel has a no pet policy) or, for that matter, park your car with a pet outside the hotel.
Better avoid the hotel if you smoke (as the hotel has a no smoking policy) and
tread softly at night (as the hotel has uber-squeeky parquet flooring).
And better not pay when you check in as you may get thrown out.
Finally, better avoid the place altogether.

Yet all had started well. As we checked-in, we specifically asked the friendly receptionist if it was acceptable to the hotel for our dog to stay in the car, which we were offered to park in the adjacent garage of the hotel. Alternatively, we were going to move the car into the street. The receptionist confirmed that this was fine and took EUR166.50 as he checked us in.

We were sitting in the hotel's reception area, having a night cap, when a man came through the reception hall, walked out, only to return moments later. What happened next was outrageous, off scale, unheard of: as the man returned he launched into us in a commandeering tone of voice, shouting that it was against the policy of the hotel to have a dog in the hotel, telling us to leave immediately. We were stunned, yet responding in a very firm way, asking him to mind his own business as we were paying guests in this hotel and all had been cleared about the dog in the car.

The man claimed that he was the owner of the hotel and wanted us to leave as we didn't adhere to the no pet rules of the hotel. We tried to reason with him, offered to move the car into the street. He refused: he would not tolerate that either. 40 minutes of arguments unfolded, shouting, with that man mocking us with some talk of "Finding a compromise" (we had to come up with), launching into us, pointing finger: the man seemed under the influence and there was a palatable sense of insanity about the situation. We left. Having paid EUR166.50 for being out in the street in the middle of the night seemed suddenly just so much more agreeable than being in that place, which we suggest should only be considered once it has what it deserves: a new management as the current one is clearly unfit to run a hotel.

Thank you for these comments. This will give me the chance to respond to your story. I will keep it very short:

1. the receptionist clearly said that dogs are not allowed in the hotel. You said you wil keep the dog in your car during your stay. However when I came in the hotel at 22:00 hrs, your husband walked in the lobby with the dog. You knew this was not allowed
2. Secondly not very animal friendly from you to keep a dog in a car all evening, night and morning. I explained that I would not let you keep a dog in a car all night: it broke my heart
3. It specifically says on all websites that animals are not alowed in our hotel: you said at check-in "yes we knew but we do it all the time and the hotels allow it then anyway"
4. I phoned to your booking agent and she had you on the pPhone saying to you that I was correct and you should leave the hotel. After hearing that you started to grap things from the desk like the telephone etc...and when going away you put up your middle finger. How polite is that?
5. Guests passed by and you went to them to discuss with them and afterwards they came back to me to see whether I needed help since you were shouting and very impolite.
6. I tried to find a dog hotel but you did not want to wait and kept shouting at me

The policy is clear: no dogs allowed and definitely no guests allowed that on purpose bend the rules, shout, calling names, bothering other geusts and putting up middle fingers and locking animals in a car all night and evening.

Our visit to Ghent was for one night as we traveled from The Netherlands back to the UK. We wanted to stay in a town that offered enough activity for a day of sight seeing, but wasn't overwhelming, and a lovely hotel for our last night before returning to work after the Christmas holiday. Ghent and Charme Hotel Hancelot provided us exactly what we desired!

We arrived before check-in time and the staff was extremely helpful. The lobby and dining room of the hotel is absolutely stunning. It reminded me of what I imagine to be Old World Europe - turn of the 20th century charm - with a large fire place and decorations for Christmas. We were able to leave our bags, get tips on the city sites, and restaurant recommendations for the afternoon. Upon our arrival back to the hotel before dinner, we were greeted with a glass of wine before we went upstairs to our room on the third floor. Our room was large, very clean, and cozy because it was in the eaves of the roof.

The hotel is a 10-15 minute walk to the centre of Ghent, which was perfect because we explored different walking routes through the shopping district to get back and forth to the hotel.

I couldn't recommend this hotel enough! Don't stay in the city centre at a chain hotel. Stay at the Hancelot where you'll have more preferential service of a B&B.

We arrived in the afternoon for a Christmas weekend in Gent and were warmly welcomed by one of the staff members (Nadia) with a drink. After that we received a map of Gent and lots of tips. Our room was simple, but had a nice bed, the bathroom was large. Bath and shower, and two sinks. The building is old but fabulous. Lovely fire place and surroundings. Breakfast was great: lovely staff members, various types of bread, toppings, fresh eggs and drinks. On our last day we received a glass of cava. We had a great stay and will surely stay here again!

Room Tip: As said in earlier reviews, there is no elevator, so make sure you are able to climb some stairs. Th...

This hotel is more like a bed and breakfast. It is small, lovely, the staff were gracious and the décor was beautiful. It is obviously an old building but they have used the old and added modern amenities like bathrooms to satisfy today's needs. The breakfast room, sitting areas, entrance ways were all beautiful with original floors and style. It was close enough to the centre of town, and close to some very good restaurants. A ten minute (1km) walk will take you past shopping, wine stores, restaurants and to the medieval centre - best way to find where to eat at night, since the hotel has no restaurant for dinner.

Room Tip: the floors ARE noisy because they are wood. But old wood and very authentic. the hotel provides slip...

Charme Hotel Hancelot certainly lives up to it's name. It is a charming hotel close enough to the centre of Ghent. A easy 10-15 min stroll will take you to the centre passing interesting attractions on the way. The hosts are very welcoming and the hotel decorated with tasteful period pieces, which adds to the relaxed ambience. Continental style breakfast is of a high standard and the choice excellent. We were given an upgrade to a larger room as we were staying for 3 nights and the room was spacious with old wooden floors (complimentary slippers provided so noisy heels would not disturb guests below), comfortable bed, modern fitted bathroom (which is always appreciated) with a nice shower. My husband and I both recommend a stay at the Hancelot.

Thank you for recommending us. Indeed all our rooms are decorated differently but all with antique furniture. In combination with the high ceilings in our Charm Hotel, the authentic wooden floors, the rich decorated ceilings in the breakfast lounge, the fire places and the cristal chandeliers, it brings you back in time of 1840 when this building was lived in by a barons family. We have tried to keep everything as authentic as possible in combination with the modern comfort of wireless internet, flatscreen TV, modern bathroom in all rooms and facilities like sauna, fitness and free internet corner. In all our rooms we have also put individual packed slippers to avoid as much as possible the sound of walking on wooden floors. The wooden floors are part of the charm and atmosphere and are part of its authenticity. Furthermore very hygienic in comparison with putting carpets in the room. Looking forward to welcome you again

the hotel's position is not convenient to walk to the city centre which is 1km afar. however tram/bus lines connect it to both train stn and downtown (but it is not clear on web). I recommend 1st floor rooms, and 3rd floor is to be avoided. floors are in wood, quite noisy!!
B/F was regular, but with little fantasy and variety, on a fixed basis. It is ideal for couples over 50 (there is a 'still' atmosphere), but it lacks complimentary newspapers, a decent TV, luggage service, a working toaster (mishap!) or eggs made on command...
If in Gent again, I'd test Novotel (very central) or IBIS (central and economic). personnel is very mice, but limited,.. thus many standard services must be forgotten

Room Tip: confermo, evitare il IIIp., meglio il primo, già al secondo si arriva con una stretta scala, e nessu...

Thank you that you have enjoyed the atmosphere and our friendly and personal service. A tip for next time: ask our breakfast lady for toast, she will be happy to make it for you in the kitchen. We do not put a machine or toaster in the breakfast room since sometimes guests forget they have put bread in and it starts smelling in the breakfast room after burnt bread. Indeed it is a continental breakfast buffet with freshly squeezed orange juice and coffee or tea served at the table and then you can make a choice from the buffet with three sorts of cheese, three sorts of salads, home made fruit salad, three sorts of sliced meat, two sorts of jam, honey cake, crackers, chocolate spread, two sorts of yoghurt, honey, four sorts of flakes like muesli and cornflakes, two sorts of sliced bread, cakes with raisins, applecake, luxury sandwiches, croissants, chocolate pastry, etc.....In short: a good and fullfilling way to start your day and explore Ghent. With the historical city centre 10 minutes walking away or take tram 4 at the end of our street and with three stops you are there. Or if you like to stay in the Arts Quarter of the city centre where we are located, visit the by UNESCO listed small Begijnenhof just around the corner, or walk through one of the parks and the musea around it that are located in our area. Or plan an evening of culture in the main theatre Capitole or enjoy a movie in the cinema complex at five minutes walking from the hotel. Lots to do in Ghent so make sure you plan at least two nights!

What a charming hotel. Not much to look at from the outside but once inside its has the most wonderful atmosphere and is loaded with charm and character. We were greeted with a welcome drink and escorted to a wonderful loft room, there are no lifts it this hotel and its a good ten minute walk out of the town centre but it is truly wonderful.

we will definitely be making a return visit.

Room Tip: No lift so be prepared for the stairs. Hotel parking was really cool, your almost in reception!!
