“Great stay in beautiful Ghent late September 2013”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 October 2013

This would have to be one of the best B & Bs we have stayed in. We travelled by train from Brussels to Ghent Dampoort and Tom's (the owner) directions couldn't have been clearer. We were on the top floor in a very spacious, tasteful and clean room and bathroom. Tom couldn't have been more helpful, each morning after a very nice breakfast he would help us with directions, train timetables, where to eat etc for the day. Bed in Ghent is close to the train station and a 10 minute walk into Ghent. We were so glad we chose to stay in Ghent as opposed toBrugges, which is very pretty but doesn't have the real feel that Ghent does. Thanks again Tom for a great stay!

This is a real gem 10-15 minutes walk from the center of Gent. Tom the owner of this place is a great host and full of tips about Gent. The room was clean and decorated with good taste. If you can spent time taking to Tom about word music, he is a real resource. The breakfast is wonderful with marmalades prepared by his mother. I liked the location because of multiethnic shops and close to the Dampoort train station only 5 minutes walk. Also, is really economical, Tom should charge more for this place.

First and foremost is the man who runs this gem; Tom is an amazing host and an amazing ambassador for Gent..from the fantastic breakfast spread to the amazing recommendations of the gems of the city. The location is close to the Dampoort station (don't get off the train at St Peters) and is a ten minute walk to the city center..we got around on foot, took the nearby bus to a couple of museums and used the train to visit Brugges and Oudenaarde. The room (we stayed on the top floor) is spacious and the bathroom is large; all in all a wonderful place

We travelled by train from Amsterdam to Gent Dampoort and had advised Tom of our planned arrival time but we weren’t prepared for the welcome we got when we knocked on the door. Tom is a great host, amusing, entertaining, knowledgeable about Gent and the surrounding areas and he puts together a great breakfast complimented by his Mum’s homemade jams.
Tom insisted on carrying our bags up to our rooms – my advice take him up on the offer, he’ll bring them back down to. The stairs are quite steep and it would have been a struggle for me.
We stayed on the top floor, the room is quite large with a great bed and a desk and a big bathroom. Tom showed us the other room between guests and it wouldn’t disappoint either. Both rooms are very clean, tidy and functional – lack of TV may be an issue for some people but you do get a record player and a great selection of records – make sure you chat with Tom about his music too.
The B&B is located an easy five minute walk from the station – make sure you get the train to Gent Dampoort not Gent St Pieters or you’ll be up for a long walk.
You can easily walk into town from here – about 10 to 15 minutes away.
From Gent we did day trips to Brugge and Ostend – Brugge is very touristy, whereas Gent is just as beautiful but without the tourists. Ostend is worth visiting as well to see how the Europeans enjoy the beach. There is also a coastal tram that goes the full length of the Belgian coast that’s worth the time too.
Tom also advised us on what to visit within Gent plus where to eat close by – try the cafe Het gouden hoofd within easy walking distance.
We would definitely recommend this B&B, it was one that brings back great memories, we hope to return.

Room Tip: Either room is good value, if you don't like stairs then get the lower room

You must stay here.
Gent is an amazing small city with a range of attractions but the experience of staying at Tom's place is what makes it a such a memorable experience.
The B&B is easy to find, just a short walk from Gent Dampoort Station and the price (75 euro a night) with a simple but beautiful breakfast (eg. homemade jams) is great value. The room we stayed in (2nd floor) is spacious and lovingly appointed (a great library, including many English books and a selection of vinyl records) -very airy and bright. The steps are very narrow and steep but Tom will carry your bags up (and down) for you - just hold on and take it slow as you are descending.
Tom's tips for what to do are impeccable. Het Gouden Hoofd, a local restaurant 5 minutes walk away (make sure you book), is a must visit and if you are there on Sunday don't miss the Community bar and cafe (with live music) and the ruins of the Abbey which are literally just around the corner.

We had such an enjoyable stay at Tom’s B&B, “Bed in Gent” that we left there thinking that money wasn’t enough. We were made to feel very welcome and at home in his house. Tom is genuinely interested in his guests and has a true love for the local community and the city of Gent. We had the top floor room which was spacious, well lit and unbelievably clean. The breakfast in the morning was substantial – we enjoyed fresh breads and pastries, cheeses, homemade jams, cereals and the perfect boiled eggs! We also found the location very convenient…not too long a walk into the historic centre of Gent but also a short walk from Gent Dampoort station. All-in-all, a wonderful stay and we were sad to leave.

Room Tip: I recommend the top floor room
