“Lovely Irish Hospitality in the Heart of Gent”
Reviewed 19 April 2013

My husband and I traveled with our two mothers to this gracious hotel earlier this month. I had been in touch with the staff a number of times before our arrival and they were very prompt and courteous in getting back to me with answers to my questions. It was difficult to find accommodations with two bedded rooms in Gent for our moms which surprised me, but I was so glad we were able to find the right rooms for our needs at the Hotel Onderbergen. The rooms are lovely and look exactly as they do on the hotel website. Comfy beds, good water temperature and pressure, and we appreciated some English language channels on the TV. The location is central to all sightseeing, as well as numerous shops and restaurants. We had breakfast each morning at the next door pub, in addition to dinner one night. It's an especially lively and popular place in the evening, and all of the meals we had were very good. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and would definitely stay there again if the occasion to visit Gent again arises. Thank you Hotel Onderbergen!

I was travelling in Ghent for a one day trip alone. I booked the room on the internet and the service was great. I wrote emails on few occasions toask questions and they replied promptly.

The hotel is well located in Ghent, from 5 to 10 minutes to city center. The hotel is quiet and the room was very clean and had been recently refurbished. The room was quite small, perfect for me since I was alone but wouldn't have been appropriate should I have travelled with my wife. Service at the front desk was excellent.

Would definitely recommend for a trip to Ghent. Wouldn't recommend for a romantic trip or couples seeking to spend good times in the room since they are small.

Had a great time at the Hotel Onderbergen in Gent! It’s a really lovely hotel, very unique, modern en-suite rooms with cable/satellite television channels, desk and minibar. Spotless. The hotel is quiet, beautiful décor and only down the road from the Saint Bavo Cathedral and 2 minutes' walk from the Veldstraat. Delicious full Irish breakfast downstairs in Foleys Irish Pub the following morning. The price was right. Hotel and Foleys Irish pub are run by Patrick Foley. Professional staff, great personalized service. Top class all round!

Room Tip: Book early in advance!!!

Nice, big and clean room with an individual style but without too much clutter. Friendly staff. The only downside is the breakfast which has to be eaten at the pub next to the hotel. Nothing wrong if you have enough time but if you don't have much time, it's not ideal: you have to order your breakfast of choice and of course that means it's fresh and also very tasty, but you have to take into account that you need about half an hour to have breakfast.

We were in Ghent for a romantic getaway just the two of us and had picked this hotel because it seemed friendly, cosy and comfortable. Unfortunately, it was none of that.

We had ordered a double room with a double bed, but when we arrived found that our room had a twin bed that was pushed together. When we complained to the receptionist she said that all the beds in the hotel were like that and that they had never had any complaints. Thought this was a bit hard to believe we figured we gave it a try.

This was a serious mistake. Because of how the beds were arranged the mattresses were slanted to the middle and all night we kept rolling into the middle crack. We normally prefer to sleep together (which is why we wanted a double bed to begin with), but sleeping in the crack between two beds is not comfortable and we woke up un-rested and with broken backs.
So we figured we would offer the hotel one more chance to provide us the double bed we had ordered and if they couldn’t just move to another hotel.

To our shock the hotel insisted on holding us to their 3-day cancellation policy and charging us for the remainder of the stay. After some discussion they said they would put the room back online and that they were 98% certain they would be able to rent it and in that case would charge us. With the other hotel we had booked in the meantime we had the option to cancel until 6pm and the receptionist promised to call us before then to let us know if they were unable to rent out the room.
We didn’t hear anything, so assumed the matter was closed and the next day we wrote them an email to that effect. Few minutes later we got a call saying that they were unable to rent out the room and that they had charged our credit card!!!

We are obviously disputing the claim through the credit card company, but this was not the hassle we were hoping for short romantic get-way.

Location, etc is good, but don’t be deceived by the cute boutique image. The beds are really uncomfortable and the hotel management seems more interested in squeezing money from their customers for services not rendered, than delivering on their promises!!!

Room Tip: Unless you prefer sleeping seperate, avoid this hotel altogether. Marriotte and Sandton were very ni...

The staff were very helpful and friendly, they answered all our questions and queries before we arrived and whilst we were there. The family room was very large ( 1 double bed, 2 singles and bunk beds) and had really comfortable beds. The food in the restaurant was good and they welcomed our 3 children. We parked in a car park 5 mins walk away which was easy to access but as we were so central we didn't need the car. It was quiet but very convenient. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Ghent.

Only a few minutes walk into the old town along the canal. Two minutes for the main shopping area too so location is excellent. Our room (8) was right at the top and the end of a corridor so we heard no noise from any other guests or street traffic. Very comfy, huge bed and clean, modern rooms. Definitely recommend this hotel and would happily stay again.

Room Tip: Room 8 while not the largest really feels cozy and tucked out of the way.
