“Nice hotel - but no parking!!!”
Reviewed 9 August 2011

Nice Hotel - nice staff - centrally located - easy to find - but beware. There is a tiny car park underneath which is permanently FULL! They know this because they have maps ready at reception to guide you to a public car park about a quarter of a mile away. So if you fancy dragging your cases through the centre of Gent - fine! I award only 3 stars as the web site is misleading and should warn drivers of this.

For 132 EUR, I booked a room with a bed and a sofa for 4 people and I actually got two rooms: a bedroom and a living room with a sofa bed, a table with chairs and even a music player. The rooms were clean and well furnished. Toilet separated from bathroom.
Waken up at 5am by some crazy people upstairs; not really hotel's fault.
Overall, I was pretty satisfied.

For us tourists the city of Ghent obviously has some great things in store, but for the mean time the place looks like a construction site. Arriving at the main trainstation (Ghent Sint Pieters) you wind up in the middle of an immense hole in the ground, and after having taken tramline nr. 1 to the center of the city (ten minutes) you wind up in an other, directly bordering on which is the Novotel itself, a fine hotel by the way. The hotel can hardly be blamed for the fact that the Ghent authority’s decided to restructure the towns main squares, on the most important one of which it is situated, right behind St. Niklaaschurch. Be warned: work started october 2010, and will take 15 months, till the beginning of 2012 that is. But then, you can’t be more central than at the Novotel and my room (superior double, € 319 for two nights) was spacious and well appointed, overlooking the inner courtyard around which the hotel is built, and where there is a swimming pool and a terrace. Weather was very bad for the end of july and only the very foolhardy tried to sit outdoors, smokers probably. The hotel has an indoors-restaurant and a café too, where, so I noticed, lots of people were eating. Service at the desk was fine too. Yet, although, like I said, it was very chilly - heavy northern wind, drizzle now and then - in the city itself everybody was sitting outdoors, because these were the last days of what is called the “Ghentse feestweek.” Feestweek means ‘party-week’, and so it was. Music everywhere and of course eating and drinking everywhere. I stopped counting, but there were hundreds of temporary structures, spanned by tents, where people were sitting, singing, and drinking and eating all over the center, and where live music was played. On Saturday night I witnessed an immense historical procession, issuing from Ghents old castle, Gravensteen, at least a thousand people taking part in period costumes. Masses were strolling around till late at night.
It definitely isn’t my intention to discourage you from visiting Ghent, on the contrary, because the city is arguably the most lovely in Belgium. And where that once was a bit of a public secret, it isn’t anymore. I read that the Hilton has decided to open its fourth Belgian hotel in Ghent. Bruges (Brugge) is more picturesque perhaps, but is is also very neat and somewhat artficial, and has a bit of a museumfeel. Brussels has some lovely parts too of course, but the city is as a whole is a bit of a chaos and you do have to know your way around. Ghent has a large and lovely old center, even if part of looks (as it does now) like a construction-site. Beautiful old squares (never called ‘square’ by the way, because most of them aren’t, but ‘markets’: markt) are sprinkled all over the city-center, through which run two small rivers, so that there are quite a few quays as well and may riverside streetcafés. Part of the festivities was taking place on boats. In Sint-Bavochurch is Van Eycks famous Adoration of the Lamb (€ 4 euros to enter), and in the Citadelpark, near the trainstation Sint Pieters, is the Museum of Fine Arts, which has an interesting collection, in what I thought is a beautiful building. Nice place, Ghent.

Very good service. Comfortable room. Very good location in the center of the city.
The garden with the swimming pool is an excellent place to relax after a difficult day. I would certainly reccomend it to a friend of mine.

The Novotel in Gent is extremely well situated with access to everything: shops, clubs, restaurants, and of course the historic center. Inside, this is a very plain vanilla hotel. If you want European charm, this is not your place! The public spaces and restaurant is small and stale. The rooms are good-sized by European standards. Staff is friendly and service adequate. The hotel does have a small pool and private courtyard as a bonus. Coming late in summer might be hazardous, as there is no air conditioning. Reasonable rates, and comfortable.
