“Don`t eat the Pringles”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 July 2008

Stayed at the hotel in July 2008 with a party of 15 celebrating a 60th birthday after travelling to Belgium on the Eurostar holding a birthday party on the train. It was the first time the staff had seen a picture of a Eurostar on the top of a birthday cake.
The hotel is quite a long way from the railway station and as it was festival time in Gent taxis were not allowed into the centre although our very helpful taxi driver dropped us as near as possible to the hotel and then gave us clear directions.
The check in staff appeared to be very efficient and our check in at 1.00pm was 3 hours before the requested time but our rooms were ready and the luggage was taken up very quickly to the rooms. A normal room is very spacious with a large bathroom and very comfortable twin beds, a table, 2 ample chairs and enough drawers and wardrobe space. Warning, the espresso coffee machine is difficult to use (we only mastered it the evening before we checked out), only the bottled water is free, don`t touch the Pringles (price 3 euros), nuts or bottle of wine.
We ate the Pringles before realising the cost of 3 euros although we were not charged on check out. Evening meal is a reasonable price at 19.50 euros although the salad menu each evening could do with a bit of variation. Very close to all the attractions in Gent, boat trip good value and worth a visit to the Castle of the Counts although the city was very busy during the Gent Festival. If you want to see the buildings don`t go during the festival in July. All in all, a comfortable stay in a city centre hotel with reasonable meals. Worth trying but beware of the Pringles.

Booked a 2 night stay in a superior room. Our room was spacious with a comfy large bed and a nice bathroom with lots of toileties. Large flat screen tv with cable channels incl. BBC1 & 2. Had a great view from our window of the Belfort Tower. The breakfast was excellent with hot (bacon, sausages, scambled eggs, etc) as well as a cold choice of foods. The only minor quibble we had was concerning the coffee/tea tray. Found the expresso machine a bit difficult to work, gave up with the coffee and just used the hot water for tea. They also left pringles, nuts and a tiny bottle of wine on the tray which we thought was a nice touch only to find out it wasnt free when we checked out. There were no prices anywhere to be seen nor for the minibar. They said they were updating the price list! After we complained, they only charged us for the wine (8 euros)!! All in all though, we had a good experience and would stay here again.

Some might say it is a pity that just the old façade remains, having building a branch new hotel in every other sense. However, I found it a metaphor of the city itself, where medieval architecture gets along with modern times, managing the transition quite well. It is located in the town centre, opposite to Town hall and close to the cathedral.. Gent it is not a big city and main attractions are situated on walking distance from each other. Nonetheless, its location is an added plus. Hotel room was superb, clean, beautiful decor, with a big, comfy bed; huge bathroom (with both shower and bath tube) and all the toiletries that have became a signature in NH hotel chain. It had a Nespresso coffee maker, delicious Belgian chocolates, and refreshments all for free. The perfect place to indulge yourself. Highly recommendable.

Spent four nights here and loved it.

We had booked an Executive room and it was amazing for the price. Separate dressing room, lovely bathroom and wonderfully comfy bed.

Ghent is a beautiful place to visit with amazing restaurants as well. Try "Cassis", it is sensational!

Only have good things to say about this hotel, would highly recommend especially if you book an Executive Room.

Great central location, comfortable well equpped rooms and friendly staff who provided good service. Super buffet breakfast and lots of nice touches such as bath robes and slippers, bowls of fruit etc. Ghent provided a great weekend with lots of good restaurants, great beer and friendly people.

We arrived and were checked in promptly by a very efficient lady employee at the reception desk. At this point we realised that our colleague had left her passport in the taxi, the lady then called the taxi company and within minutes we had got the passport back, excellent. During check in we were told that we would be upgraded into executive suites (because of the company I work for). This was the first time I have ever been upgraded so I very impressed.

The room itself was superb (250), long corridor leading into the bedroom with sofa and big flat screen TV. Off the corridor was a good size bathroom, separate toilet and walk in wardrobe. Very clean (apart from a few marks here and there on the walls) and a bottle of complimentary water awaiting my arrival. (see photos). The bed was one of the best I have slept in. The room even had a doorbell.

We used the hotel restaurant and bar most evenings (we stayed from 4th May - 9th May), the prices were on the expensive side but generally very good. The waiter Jules was superb, extremely polite and efficient. The only slight downside to the hotel was the gym / fitness room. It has a running machine, cross trainer, two exercise bikes and two leg machines. There is no multi gym for training upper body or free weights, I only used the treadmill.

Everyone in the hotel spoke good English, as did everyone we spoke to in Ghent including shop clerks and taxi drivers. In fact Ghent was the most friendly European city that I have visited. Its also a great place to see, very picturesque and great architecture.

As with previous reviews I would imagine that it would be quite difficult to get to if you had to drive. You have to drive through the town avoiding bikes, pedestrians and trams while trying to navigate to the hotel. We used taxis which for us was the best option.

Overall a great hotel.

This was a nice hotel- good facilities, large room, excellent location within a very short walk of all Ghent attractions. Good variety in the breakfast buffet.

However, it is very modern- don't be fooled by the outside photo that makes it look like it has character; that's just a tiny bit of the facade that doesn't reflect the reality.

  • Liked — Spacious room
  • Disliked — The misleading photo of the outside on the hotel's website!
