“Nice Hotel”
Reviewed 9 August 2014

My wife and I stayed here with some friends 2 weeks ago. The hotel itself is nicely decorated with many nice common areas. Staff were friendly and efficient. Based on the two rooms we saw it appears that each room may be individually laid out. Although we had opted at booking time for the cheapest available room, we were pleasantly surprised to get a suite style room, with separate living and sleeping areas, and a very spacious balcony which wrapped around our corner unit. Our friend's room was larger than ours but lacked the separated living and sleeping areas and didn't have a balcony. Both were very comfortable and had excellent shower/bathroom facilities. With good quality free wifi, and a short walk from the centre this is a good option for anyone visiting Ghent.

One thing(which is more a comment about Ghent than about the hotel): We opted to pass on the breakfast because at 22 euro a head we felt it was a bit pricey and decided we would find a cafe to have breakfast in. Because we did not eat there I cannot comment on whether the price was justified or not. However, I can say that we found it difficult to find breakfast elsewhere in Ghent. I would say most people in Ghent either skip breakfast entirely or limit themselves to a coffee and pastry. In retrospect I would have paid the money and eaten at the hotel. It would have saved some walking around with an empty stomach.

Room Tip: 4th floor rooms have balconies. Not sure about the rest.

We didn't know the Gentfeeste was on when we arrived, and whilst we love music, we had come for a rest... so we were delighted that our room in the garden was totally quiet, and the facilities excellent. The room was really spacious, with a beautiful bathroom; the shower was enormous, and the loo could be separated, which made life a lot easier!
The breakfasts were generous, and the staff balanced efficiency with personal service.
And Ghent is a great place.... architecturally, culturally and on a pleasant, human scale.

Room Tip: Garden rooms are great... don't know about the main hotel rooms.

Nice hotel with good rooms and good breakfast. Good location for weekend stay in Ghent. Hotel also has a little pool. Service at teh front desk was very good and helpfull. Parking option at the hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms with the 'garden view' are the best.

A really lovely hotel very close to the city centre. The staff were most helpful, friendly and efficient, the rooms were large, clean and comfortable, there was the opportunity to relax in public rooms or even to take coffee in the large and airy quadrangle, and the breakfast was excellent. There was free wi-fi, and absence of coffee facilities in the room was a minor, and the only issue. It is a fine hotel, looks very grand and is very good value for money. I recommend it most warmly.

Room Tip: Quiet rooms are available on request, although all seemed to be quiet.

The Sandton is a great hotel. It also is a big hotel with a friendly staff. Personally the staff was a bit distant, but if you like the 'businesslike' approach you will feel perfectly at home. The historic building looks majestic and from the balcony of our room in the modern wing of the hotel, it is a nice view on the courtyard and the main building. The Sandton is nicely located, yet a few minutes too far from being on the perfect spot but that also gives you the change for a nice little stroll and a beautiful view when entering the old city of Ghent. It's almost medieval. Overall we had a very pleasant stay.

We stayed for 3 nights at the end of May in a standard double. The hotel was very busy as it was a holiday weekend in Belgium. Reception was very efficient and the room was larger than expected with a very nice balcony!, there was no tea and coffee facilities but this seems normal in Belgium although it would have been welcome. The hotel is situated a 5 minute walk from the centre and was a very nice and peaceful place to return after the very busy centre of Ghent. We did not try the food in the hotel although we spoke to another couple who said it was of a high standard, although at 17 euros for breakfast I would expect it to be!

One thing that I would like to mention is the lift. During busy hours in the morning and the early evening the wait could be excessive. This was not helped in the morning by calling a lift and when it did turn up it was full of laundry and a cleaner. Also space in the car park can be limited there is a public car park nearby which is bigger and cheaper.

All in all a pleasant stay and I would return.

Room Tip: The rooms with a balcony are great.

This hotel is situaded in an old and very stylish building. The public areas are all new and renovated in an excellent way. From the hotel entrance from the parking garage to the receptioniste and courtyard: it all looks grand! Staff is very friendly, sleep quality excellent (although on the road very well sound proofed as we did't hear a peep), all is new and clean. I highly recommend this hotel and will stay here for sure on a next trip to lovely Gent.
