Did NOT like the squishy beds and lack any kind of support. Oh my back. Teens running and screaming down the corridors. No real supervision either. Parking costs 10 euro's and not really secure. open gate all the time. Not good. Had to ask for a ice bucket, took 20 minutes to find one.
Air conditioner was very LOUD and not usable to sleep by. Buy some ear plugs for this hotel. Open window with traffic noise, can't win here. Will NOT be back. Going to try the continental breakfast now. Wish me luck.

Room Tip: Go elsewhere if you need good back support in bedding.

Dear LarryN

I'm sorry to read that you're not happy with some technical features in your room. Please note that we have a technician onsite and our friendly reception staff ready to help you 24/7 with any questions you may have.

Bedding has always been something very personal. Some guests find the bed to soft, other guests had such a great night that they want to take it home with them. A one-mattress-fits-all doesn't exist. Holiday Inn has set specific standards for the bedding in the room. In our rooms, you will find a wood frame box spring with a conventional coil mattress (min 351 coils).

However, if you don't like this type of mattress, we have also got several rooms with comfortable Innergetic foam mattresses available for you. Kindly inform our staff when making your reservation if you'd like this type of bed.

With regards to your remarks about a shower lever and your airco..Unfortunately if you post your
comments on TripAdvisor, we have no way of fixing this for you. We can't find you back by name, nor by room number. From your comments, i understand that you are still in the hotel. Please contact our reception staff and we will do our utmost to ensure you have a great stay!

Best regards

We stayed here 1 night. It's an okay place. Rooms are average, breakfast was average. At least there was a bar where I could get some food since we got in late. Bonus points here for good working internet! That was kind of a rarity on our family recent Europe excursion. Horrible location if you wanted to visit Gent. But it's right off the freeway and easy to find if you're just stopping through.

Dear D B
Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. I'm happy you liked the Free WiFi. We've just upgraded the network to add bandwidth, a backup line and a next-gen Firewall allowing us to reserve speed for business applications such as VPN, Skype and Cloud computing?

With a free PriorityClub membership, we will even upgrade your connection to our Ultimate Wifi network where can connect multiple devices such as laptop, tablet and your smartphone, anywhere in the hotel.

With regards to our location, i agree that the hotel is very easy to find but not in the city center. However, as Ghent has the largest pedestrianized city center of Flanders (you need to park in one of the car parks surrounding the city center), Holiday Inn Express Gent might be a smart place to stay after all :-)

You can leave your car on our parking lot and hop on the public bus next the hotel every 30 minutes. No stress, no traffic.. Our friendly reception staff will be happy tell you all about the best ways to travel around in Ghent.

Sincerely

Laurens Roels

We stayed overnight to break a long journey to Holland by road. We booked a family room which had adequate space for my wife and I plus our two young children. The beds were comfortable enough. For me the best part was the food in the all you can eat buffet. This tasted like gourmet food and honestly the best I've had for a long time. The breakfast was nearly as good and there was plenty of it. I definitely recommend staying here.

Hi Paul

We like the food too. Our Chef Michel loves Belgian cuisine with fresh seasonal ingredients.

Did you know that this autumn, our hotel guests get 10% discount on the restaurant bill?

And as always in Holiday Inn Express Hotels, Breakfast is free of charge, and Kids up to 18y stay and eat free when sharing a room with their parents.

Thank you for the positive feedback. We look forward to seeing you again in Gent.

Sincerely

No wonder the Aussies call us whingeing Poms!

This hotel represents excellent value for money especially if booked through hotels.com. The room was spacious and clean for our family of four and every other aspect of the hotel was excellent - breakfast buffet, dinner buffet where kids eat for free, politeness and helpfulness of the hotel staff. We came back and stayed here two nights longer than planned because we took one look at the HIE in Antwerp and ran, and we are glad that we did.

Four excellent nights' sleep combined with great food and trips to Gent city centre and the Zeeland area of Holland - what could there be to moan at? Just one small issue with wireless coverage but they say they are looking at it....

Room Tip: There is no pool or fitness centre. Choose room 312 or 412!

Drab, cold pre-fab building but fairly sized rooms, clean, bathroom small but completely equipped, good mattresses, friendly staff, breakfast ok, free wi-fi, affordable internet rate. Quite a way from the city if you plan visiting Ghent (which is definitely worth a visit!). GPS required or you won't find the hotel though it's near a major highway. Not a romantic place to stay but ok if you're just driving through and need a place to rest before moving on. For our next visit, we'll need to find a place closer to the city.

Room Tip: If you like to sleep with an open window, choose a room facing the trees. They insulate enough again...

An out of town option for those with a car or using a taxi. This HIE is a cut above most I have stayed in - more like a full blown HI than an 'Express'.

Difficult to find from the hotel directions/Google maps, and frustrating to see it from the motorway, but be unable to get to it directly. However, once I found the car park check in was very friendly.

A mix up with the room type was sorted without much fuss - apart from criticism of housekeeping to a colleague in flemish in front of me, the customer. Reception could not get room change quite right & we ended up with a twin rather than a double - but too tired to argue for a further room change, so accepted for one night.

Room very clean, and good facilities including tea/coffee, which you don't get in all European hotels, even of a higher standard. Air con noisy, but effective - would not want to have to keep it on all night though as too distracting.

As stated before on this site only option to eat is the hotel restaurant or that of Campanille hotel next door. Restaurant is better than any other HIE I have stayed at - you actually felt the waiting team were there to look after you, and the chefs knew how to prepare very good standard of food. Settled for the 4 course buffet at Eur 22 pp; good value as it included starter and dessert buffet, soup of the day and limited choice of main course meal. As one of the party is a vegetarian, the waiter was very happy to substitute a vegetarian option from the a la carte menu for their main course. A la carte is pricey unless you just want one course to eat, but decent range of dishes available.

Small bar area offers limited choice of drinks - certainly not a great place to sample a vast range of Belgian beers, but fine to see some on tap rather than just bottled.

Breakfast buffet very extensive, but a real shame about the quality of the cheese, which was very plastic. Coffee very poor - I've tasted better instant coffee in hotel rooms than that served up in the breakfast area; but I believe this is standard HIE supply. Good range of breads/rolls/spreads & jams etc.

Checkout was efficient - but a cheek to charge for parking at checkout, then leave the barrier up for hotel's convenience. Where is the 'security' that you have been charged for!

Great hotel for a one night stay at decent price - if I had wanted to explore Gent then it is too far out to be convenient, but it is on motorway network, and, once found, is a good option for an overnight stay at a decent price.

Room Tip: Ensure you confirm the room choice you have booked with reception when you arrive - the booking conf...

I like Holiday Inn Express hotels in Europe because you can drive to them and they usually have parking. But, they are often located from from places where you can walk for dinner--i.e. industrial areas. If you have a car, they are ideal because they are good value. This one had--like most--clean rooms, you can get good value for an entire family, they have a simple breakfast (French rolls too), and tables and chairs to gather at night with the family and plan for the next day's travels. They have a restaurant and as I recall it's an all you can eat buffet, but I didn't see anything particularly impressive. We wanted to eat there, but no one was eating anything very interesting, so we drove away from the hotel (kind of a pain in you don't have a navigational device; it's off a highway exit and it's kind of tough to do a u-turn if you don't get off in time). Anyway, I give it a good value for the reasons above, but it's nothing fancy or amazing. We went (as part of an extended trip) in April 2011, but the furthest date offered by Trip Advisor is July 2011, so we are clicking on July 2011 to be fair since things may have changed since then. Oh, if you visit Waterloo, keep in mind that there's no large battlefield; it's actually a town and Wellington's former HQ is now a small museum (park behind the museum since you can't park on the road).
