“Was favourably impressed for the money”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 December 2006

For the money we paid, it was great. It looks very austere and the situation is pretty uninviting, just off the motorway. However, it's a good base for touring and the hotel itself was absolutely fine. Rooms were spotless and modern (apparently all refurbished). Beds were comfortable. The only English TV channel was BBC2, but we did find some English programmes on other channels, that had French or German subtitles. I thought the food in the restaurant was excellent, and the staff were attentive and polite. Everywhere was bright and modern. No room service or leisure facilities, as befits an Express by Holiday Inn, but all in all it was very comfortable, and I would use it again if visiting the area.

  • Liked — very good food, spotless, modern rooms
  • Disliked — outward appearance
  • Tips/Secrets — great for a touring base, need a car to get around

Hotel has recently been part refurbished. The reception area and bedrooms are modern, clean and bright. However, the restaurant and corridors have not been changed and are dated.

Each room has air con, a good shower, kettle and TV with a choice of TV channels, though not that many English speaking if that is your only language!

There is no wardrobe or drawers, just a small rail and a couple of shelves. This is OK if you are only staying one night, but if you are staying a week there is not enough storage space.

Since the refurbishment, the hotel has also changed from a Holiday inn to a Holiday Inn Express. This means the pool has gone, and there is no longer any room service.

Dinner is in the restaurant. You can order from the menu, or help youself to the buffet. Generally food is good.

Breakfast is buffet style - in reception!

Bar is pleasant, with a good selection of Belgian beers to try.

  • Liked — Pleaseant bar, modern rooms
  • Disliked — Lack of hanging space, no room service
  • Tips/Secrets — Hotel offer free taxi service in the evening into Gent - just make sure you collect the vouchers from reception.

Never again.
We have stayed in many Holiday Inns, but this hotel is of a very poor standard. The rooms are in desperate need of re decoration, the rooms are tatty (wallpaper peeling of the walls) Curtain and bedspread very old and basic, bed uncomfortable. Carpet dirty and stained. The bathroom ceiling had black mould on it, and thankfully we only stayed one night. The food was average, nothing great. However, the staff were friendly; it is just a great shame that the facilities were so unpleasant.
Avoid -

The Holiday Inn in Gent is a Holiday Inn - it does what it says on the tin, and provides good value for money. The hotel is convenient for access by road - if you're trying to get there using public transport, there is a bus stop nearby, but honestly, you'd be much better finding somewhere in the centre of town.

If you've got your own transport, the centre of town is an easy 10 minute drive.

The hotel itself is comfortable, quite modern inside (the outside looks like something best demolished a decade ago) but the staff are helpful and the car parking is free and secure.

The breakfast (included in the price) was ample, but the coffee a little muddy, but was very good for an inclusive deal. If you have to pay, don't bother - the city's tea rooms provide a much better value breakfast.

Overall - it's clean, modern, accessible and friendly. Business-orientated, but you'll still get great family rates and find it useful for exploring the city.

This hotel is situated near the E40 en E17. The moise of the traffic is sufficiently deaden by the double glazing of the room, which is very spacious. Even the bathroom is rather spacious and has a bath with a shower. There is a large double bed with the worst mattress I ever had, you feel the springs in your body (I hope this is only valid for room 526). I think the whole room is in need for a refurbishment.
Breakfast is abundantly and of rather good quality: yoghurt, several kinds of bread, meat products, cheese, and fruit.
The hotel looks like a typical bussiness hotel, good for a stay for one or two nights. I stayed there on a friday night at a price of 55 euro, which is acceptable. For a holiday trip this hotel is too far from the city centre.

Stayed here on 13th Aug after booking direct on holiday inn website to get a rate of 60euros for a night , without breakfast. The hotel itself is not pretty to look at, but is handy for the intersection of the E17 and 40 motorways, giving easy access to Brussels/Ghent/ with Bruges being about 30 mins drive. As it was away from housing etc I felt the carpark was secure with a lot of duty frees / presents in the boot of my car. The room had two double beds and was spacious for a family of four, and the coffee making facilities were appreciated after a lack of them in france. After a hard days tourism the small hotel pool was excellant for an unwind with the children, I think it stayed open until 2300? As we ate out I can't comment on the food / bars and the reception staff were friendly and spoke good english.
Overall it is a good base to tour from, well located ( unless walking ) at a pretty good rate and we would use it again.

We stayed in the Holiday Inn Gent solely to break up the long drive from Dunkerque, France to the north of Germany. The Holiday Inn is a large (and from the outside, unattractive!) five-storey concrete block located at the intersection of the E40 and E17 motorways.

Rooms were of a perfectly reasonable size and were clean. Our room (for two people) had two comfortable double beds, a TV, trouser press, hair dryer, etc. We weren't expecting much of a view and our room looked out to the motorway.

The bathroom was clean, although showing signs of age, and the shower was good. Ample towels were supplied and a sign stated that Reception had complimentary toiletries, if required.

The restaurant had only a very limited number of dishes to choose from, prices were not cheap and quality was definetely below what I'd have expected. I opted for a dish from their hot buffet which I was told would be turkey fillets. It was, however, some of processed stuff, like slices of a very smooth textured sausage - clearly NOT turkey fillets. However, the staff were friendly and helpful. It would probably have been better to eat in the bar area, which offered several pasta dishes, etc., and was much cheaper.

The breakfast buffet was made up of a good selection of food, including cold meats, cheese and salmon, yogurts, cereals, fruit, several types of bread and pastries, etc. Breakfast was much better than the previous night's dinner.

All in all, the Holiday Inn was suitable for our needs, namely a bed for the night to break up a long journey. The location was convenient for us, but may not be ideal for tourists visiting Gent - it's 3 miles or so from the city centre. As I understand, there are buses but the last one returns at about 23:00. Lastly, check out the bar menu before you head to the restaurant, it may well cost you a lot less and provide you with a better selection.
