The hotel is a 16 min tram ride (no.1 tram) from St Peters Station and is as central as it can be. All the main attractions are a 5 min walk from hotel. The 2 main art galleries are a 10 min tram ride from outside hotel.
The staff are very good (but remember you will be asked to pay hotel tax at end of stay - 6 euro a night). The room and ensuite shower room were cleaned every day.
Breakfast was above average continental.

Room Tip: The hotel is in an old building so the corridors and stairs are noisy - get a room on the highest floor you can.

Dear ironhead13,

Thank you for this nice review.

I am delighted to read that you enjoyed our breakfast, convenient rooms and central location of the Hotel. I understand you have enjoyed your time in the city as well and we would be honoured to welcome you again in the near future.

We very much appreciate your quote about our breakfast buffet, as stated 'above average continantal breakfast bufet'.

As a little remark, the city tax is not a rate the hotel can choose. The tax for your stay in Ghent will be in each hotel €3,00 per person per night.

Kind regards

Enis - Frontdesk

The first thing to say is that this hotel in right in the centre of Ghent and getting there is a nightmare. They supply directions and we got within spitting distance, but were then faced with a 'No entry' sign, so tried to bypass it , unsuccessfully. When we phoned to ask for directions, it turns out we should have disregarded the sign. duh!!
Lynn was VERY patient giving directions on our (hands free) phone.
When we got the, parking was a doddle (charged €15 per night) and check in was easy.
We were in the annex and the corridors are travel lodge style, nothing exceptional.
We had room 91, right up in the loft, rather a nice, quaint room, the added bonus is it had a balcony, that was lovely.
A good size bathroom, plenty of bath products, everything was clean and well looked after.
Our friend were in room 75, a bigger room, no balcony but a spare single bed.
It would have been nice if the hotel had put us closer together as it was one booking.
In the morning, breakfast was in the annex and there was a good choice of cereals, cold cuts and cheese. there bread was a bit varied on the three days we were there.
There were also boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, bacon and sausages. these tended to be warmish, rather than hot, a problem with the bain marie perhaps. The quality of the sausages and the was the scrambled egg was cooked was also a bit hit and miss.
We had a whisky nightcap in the 'bar' - not really worthy of the name bar in my opinion. This came at a cost of €8 per glass - grossly overpriced!!!
The staff were constantly changing, but all very helpful (see my note about Lynn earlier) and spoke good English, Axel checked us out and he was good as well.
One thing for the hotel to note is that on the invoice it wished us all the best in 2017 - it was November 2017 when we visited.

Room Tip: Room 91, if you are fit enough to climb LOTS of stairs.

Don't doubt about this hotel as a place of your stay in Gent for a short time. The location is romantic-it's quite opposite the ancient castle surrounded by the river. The tramstop is close the hotel but the noise of trams won't bother you if the room in the hotel overlooks the yard'.All the places of interest are within 5-10 minute walk. Breakfast is good and the room is clean. We'll stay in this hotel if we decide to visit Gent again.

We took a 2 day break in Ghent in October. The hotel was clean and fresh, staff were friendly and breakfast excellent. Just across from the castle the hotel makes an ideal base for exploring and socialising in Ghent.

I spent 3 nights at this hotel in conjunction with a medical conference in Ghent. The receptionists were not very service-minded, the room had a very unfresh carpet, stains on the wall and the bathroom smelled very strong of mold. It was all in all a very unpleasant experience and it did not help that the building looked very beautiful from the outside: the inside was really outdated.

Dear Rosan33

Sorry to hear that your stay at Hotel Gravensteen wasn’t very pleasant and we could not meet your standards.

80% of the rooms were renovated since 2 years now – and we are still planning renovations in the future. We keep on bringing our product to the next level. Perhaps you just had other expectations by a hotel in an old mansion? It is an historical building, but we wouldn't say it is outdated (and many guests confirm by good reviews). Nevertheless we take note (and action) of your comments and confirm we do our utmost to convince you by your next visit.

Despite the unpleasant experience – we hope you enjoyed the wonderfull city of Ghent.

Kind regards,

Hotel Gravensteen Team
